ABOUT THE CHAPMAN FAMILY
Hello folks and welcome to The Chapman Family! We are Kevin (dad), Anna (mum), Lucy (age 16), Andy (age 14), Amy (age 12) and Dave (around 35 in dog years).
We're daily family vloggers with new videos out at 5pm every day UK time. We vlog about our daily lives, including life as an autism family (Andy is autistic) and lots of nerdy stuff because we just can't help ourselves!
We'd love to have you join us on the road to 100K and share our journey with us! Hit SUBSCRIBE and don't forget to TURN THE NOTIFICATIONS ON!
A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE CHAPMAN FAMILY
When Kevin left his full-time job as a Computer Science teacher in July 2017, Anna was trapped in our house by our son Andy, who is autistic and had refused to go to school for 18 months. Our daughters Lucy and Amy and our dog Dave hardly saw him because he was always working to try and solve all our problems! Today we're full-time content creators and Kevin is always at home when the kids get home from school (all our kids!) and Anna has been able to return to university. This channel is the story of my family's ongoing journey as family vloggers! Previously known as lollujo Vlogs and Kevin Chapman.

Intensive courses, correct me if I’m wrong are for already semi-experienced drivers who maybe aren’t as comfortable/confident to book their own test. I passed both my theory and practical first time. It took me around 40HRS. Roughly £1200 in price.

Good to see you are up and feeling better! And always a tough call with driving with our teens! Praying it works out for you guys that you can figure out how to make it fit in your budget. And I think 8pm bed time is totally normal. Jaiden is 12 and with his meds he goes to bed around 8-830 every single night. But he actually chooses to go to bed at that time. So to each their own though.

I did the intensive course 7 years ago now and it was the best thing I could have done. I didn’t want to have to fit all these different lessons in around school hours and part time job so I did my course in the October holidays. Started on the Monday and took my test on the Saturday. I failed but I got it booked for two weeks after and passed. I’m not sure if it’s the same for all intensive courses now but my days would be about 8 hours worth of driving with a split. So I could do 4 hours in the morning go home and eat then go back out again in the afternoon for another 4 hours. I also booked mine specifically with a female instructor as I thought I’d feel more comfortable with the longer hours then, so that’s also something to look at. I would definitely recommend doing it if you want to speed the process up, it can be tiring but it’s worth it in the end :)

A good start is doing practise theory tests, you can find them easily online by googling it. The best I found were multiple choice apps for your phone then doing hazard perception online. For the actual lessons you can teach her to some extent for the basics of driving and parking as long as you have been driving three years and meet some other criteria (also on google) empty car parks are the best place for this! I spent just over £1500 probably to pass my test (including all tests) some driving instructors offer bulk booking at a discount rate, this is what I did. Good luck!!

Currently learning to drive and although I haven't done an intensive course I do believe that it all depends on the way her brain works if that makes any sense. Does she pick up on things quickly usually and how does she cope under pressure because those are the two things I believe that make a difference with an intensive course. Have spend at least £2000 so far on lessons, pray I pass soon!

I hope Andy isn’t getting sick too. Where I live in the states public schools still provide drivers education. When I went they gave lessons through the summer break, but other schools offered it as an elective course. I can’t imagine having to pay hundreds or thousands of dollars to learn to drive.

I personally am unable to take my driving test due to being on medication but I have a friend who done the intensive course and said it wasn’t really worth it as it was a lot to take in over a short course of time. I’ve also had friends who got their previsional licenses and became insure on their parents car so their parent could teach them effectively meaning it would require less driving lessons - and more time driving! - hope this helps :)

I think it depends on Lucy herself and her personality, whether the intensive course will work for her or not. If there's a chance she inherited some traits from the spectrum, like getting overwhelmed from sensory stimuli, or having problems processing information, or a dislike for groups, or getting stressed from social situations, then it would be wiser to have the one on one teaching and to give her the time to proces the information and by spreading the lessons out over a few months. If she doesn't have any of those issues, it might actually be a beneficial choice for her. Since she's young and in college and she has basically been in the schoolsystem her entire life, the learning in a group and learning from peers thing may actually be familiar to her, and the cramping up a lot of information in a short period of time, might be how she's learning and taking in information right now. So it might be that the intensive course feels actually more natural to her because she's used to learning and processing information in that setting and in that pace. Also who doesn't like mexican fajita's?? They're delicious!

The 5 day intensive course is VERY intensive. Cramming everything into less than a week is insane when you think about how much you have to learn for the practical AND theory. If you really want to go down that route there are a number of company’s that give free lessons if you fail first time. May be good to look into that.

I'm 19 and currently learning to drive. Tell Lucy that she doesn't necessarily need to drive just after her 17th. If she plans on attending university and wishes to live at home ( this is how I am currently able to afford my lessons.) she could use her money to support her lessons. But there is no rush whatsoever for driving. I wish her good luck tho

I’m 17 and I’m just around the corner from taking my practical test, I’ve been learning since August doing 2 hours of lessons a week, at the rate of £240 for 10 hours. I personally would probably avoid the intensive course as I’ve spent around £1000 on lessons so far (obviously this would be different for other people) in the 5 months I’ve been learning for, so in my case it has been cheaper to do weekly lessons. I’ve found it relatively easy to pay for my lessons, earning around £300 p/ month. All the best 👍

I learnt by having 2 or 3 lessons a week of 2 hours. It cost me £250 for 10 hours and ended up having roughly 40 hours. I think it ended up costing me £1100 for everything included theory and stuff. I passed in 4 months ish. Passed first time though but if you can get blocked lessons and Lucy can do a few lessons a week then it’s really worth it! Much better than intensive I think

Although I've not even started driving yet (first lesson is next month!), my thoughts on intensive driving courses aren't all that positive. In my mind, you don't get that experience and getting used to driving on the road where you would through weekly/several times a week driving lessons, but as I said I haven't done that and wouldn't actually know! But where on earth are you getting quotes from that are £40-50?? The place I'm learning from is £28 per lesson and that's airing in the more expensive side for where I live. Hope you find something that works for Lucy. Also random question, will Lucy pay for her car or is that a hurdle you've not even tried to jump yet haha.

I do my driving lessons, I work part time and they cost me £27 an hour lesson. I also have learners insurance on my mums car which my parents pay for me luckily. I buy them in bulk of 10 lessons and my instructor gives me 2 free extra. I wouldn’t recommend doing the 5 day intensive course, I looked into it myself and almost considered it. Doing 2 hours a week of lessons is stressful for me, never mind doing an intensive 5 day course! I would keep looking at going with lessons, I’m sure you can find a more reasonable price.

I took driving lessons for a month and then had to stop because I couldn't afford anymore and uni got in the way. I did though manage to get my dads old car which I practiced on and off in for a year. Then after graduating, I bought a 'intensive driving course' but mine was over 3 weeks. About 3 full days a week. I passed with 0 faults. Personally I think I did so well because I'd driving a lot with my dad in the car and even though I picked up bad habits, I was confident on the road and with physically driving the car. (Like gear changes and knowing how to control the car) A week, isn't long and I don't think I could of done it in a week. Seems too rushed. Maybe see if they do it like my driving instructor did, which was spread it over 3 weeks? Driving is tiring too. My foot (and my brain) was killing when I was doing the 5 hour lessons. Good luck! Passing was the best thing I've done, I love the freedom it gives me

The 5 day course is very intensive but I’d say to do it, my best friend did it and she says now she’d do it again if she had to learn all over again, she didn’t pass first time but because she wasn’t wasting time recapping the previous lesson in the next one (because they were just one after another) it gets you up to pass standard much faster, even if you don’t pass first time you need much fewer ‘recap’ lessons to pass than you would if you were only doing one or two lessons a week. Some companies who do it and you don’t pass will offer you free lessons until you do pass anyway, so I’d say the intensive course, if you’ve got the time and the initial larger cost, will probably be much better!

You are allowed to learn Lucy to drive yourself if you have been driving over 3 years. That may save some money. My boyfriends grandad has been teaching him & he's booked his theory and will only need 1 lesson from a driving instructor just to make sure he knows what he's doing.
@skyispink1826

Holly Clark I don’t recommend this advice. The test is strict. It’s less about ‘knowing how’ to drive but more about driving legally and safely. The test is designed to catch you out. An instructor knows best on helping you pass. When you’ve been driving for as long as Kev has, you’ll have picked up bad habits and you risk passing those on.

I think with Andy it is your call based on whether he is getting enough sleep to keep him happy and healthy. If he is getting more than he needs it might not be a bad idea to push it back a little, although due to his variable wake up times especially in summer I would still keep it fairly early 👍🏻
@siddkumar8032

@louis Faucompre i dont think so. You need to take into consideration Andy is not like everyone else. He is 15 by age but needs treatment and attention of a 10 year old due to his autistic behaviour. Sleeping early is good for him for now. We arent far from giving him more freedom and flexibility but its too early for that now

@louis Faucompre I am sure there is a reason why they insist him to sleep at 8 and wake up at 4. Maybe it takes him time in the morning to get ready. I can see where you are coming from now but if 4am is a problem for Anna then I am sure she will change the sleep cycle for Andy.

@@siddkumar8032 it doesn't matter how early or late they get him to bed he gets up when the sun is up unless he's feeling sick which is why they have his bed time at 8 now because at least he's getting 8 hrs at night to push it back that means he'll get less sleep which means he'll be exhausted in the mornings and then he'll start refusing school again it's a delicate and complicated balance

Because it will help andy out. When she has her license she will no doubt take him out and about, or drive to grab his perscriptions if you cant one day, so why not use the services on offer? Ring his benifit people they'll help. But if she decides to do the block lessons and then test she will get money towards that too. Defo something to check out. Hope this helps xx

I've been driving around 5 years now. When I started i paid £150 for 10 but it was £17.50 a lesson, cost me a lot less than £1000 with all my lessons and both theory and practical included; i did pass both first time however, obviously if you don't you've gotta pay extras ontop. Have they really went that high up in price?

5 day itensive training for a 17 year old would be, in my opinion, way too much. Especially with the official test on the last day. It takes time to drive correctly (DVSA standards) which are needed to pass. Hope that helps :)

Yeah I agree. I'm 24, never had a lesson. Can't afford really. I would like to. But my friend who's the same age was able to learn to drive and get a car soon after passing. He was very nervous driving for like the first 6 months after passing. I think if you weren't to get a car as soon as you learnt you'd have to go on a refresher course
The HOUSE MOVE hasn't gone great for Andy...
