My dad had a string of VW Squarebacks in the 60's. He'd buy one overseas delivery, drive it around Europe for a week or two and ship it home. He'd sell last year's car for slightly less than the dealer was asking (in mint condition), and drive the new one for a year. I have a whole folder of car receipts including VINs. I would love to find a website I could look up the numbers to see if any were still on the road. (highly doubtful, it was NY)

Knowing the roots of NASCAR the way I do, this story does not surprise me even in the slightest. Especially since NASCAR was born of old bootlegging, and as they are also known ridge runners. And that story is tame compared to one’s I’ve heard from a late uncle who use to bootleg moonshine back in the 1940’s and 1950’s. Party hard, does not even come close to the truth of things. But the guy dying sounds about right, also sounds about right for a scene from Days of Thunder staring Tom Cruz.
