Can't the internet service providers detect and block DDOS attacks, their infrastructure is made to handle all the traffic, even if one of their clients is DDOSsed
@squirrlockholmes Жыл бұрын
ISP's focus first and foremost on their own infrastructure. Sure they can offer DDoS protection for customers but in most cases if they do it it's cheap, will block the most basic attacks and that's it. Don't forget ISP's themself are the biggest targets and constantly under attack. Therefore normal clients and also enterprise user's are not the top priority for them; f.e let's say they detect an enormous amount of traffic hitting them they may block ALL traffic including yours - you see where this is going. If we talk about a single ISP their bandwidth is limited, and they simply will care about themselves first. ISP's also don't protect against any kind of protocol attacks. DDoS protection simply isn't their core business, there exist more than enough security-first vendors with certain products which can spread incoming traffic over different ISP's and data centres to balance and absorb incoming attacks more effective

Is it still a thing that internet provider provides you with only one IP? a fix IP?!? I mean that for private customers not professional work places or stuff like that. In Germany you have to pay a separate fee if you (private household) don’t want a dynamic IP address. I’m curious how it’s handled in different countries and what’s the reason behind it.
@hicknopunk Жыл бұрын
In the US, it costs more to get a static ip. Nearly everyone uses dynamic. Every time you power on the modem, the IP changes.
@Fuffzich21 Жыл бұрын
@@hicknopunk I know. That’s how it works in the EU (Germany) as well.
@AnthonyHarrisTechrat Жыл бұрын
Typically your IP won't change a often, even if it's "dynamic", so long as your network stays live. When your modem connects, it will typically request the last IP it remembers having (if any), that way a little blip in power or connectivity can have a minimal impact. If your modem requests an IP that the ISP has already released to another client, then it will reject the request for renewal, and the modem will make a second request for a new IP. Power outages and weird issues aside, you might keep the same dynamic IP for many months in a row.

Thanks. I certainly don't hate hackers, or have anything against them in general. Clearly, there are good & bad hackers, just like anyone else. And I notice that a good number of these stories involve teenage boys just screwing around online, giving them the 'out' of some innocence (or at least ignorance). But it seems to me that there's another element, which I do find concerning. They're curious, yes. But they also seem to escalate their activities, and seem unable or unwilling to stop themselves until they break something or otherwise get caught. 40 years ago, this might've led to truancy, or light shoplifting, or somesuch. But now, these kids can - and clearly do - actually shut down things that millions of people depend on (like My Space, or game servers, or banks, or government sites, etc. That's a lot different than doing some graffiti. I don't think there's any way one could restrict such things, without violating basic rights. Education seems like a good answer. But it does give me pause. tavi.
