(“The Watergate Story”) Alexander Butterfield was the Deputy Assistant to Richard Nixon from 1969 to 1973. On July 18th, 1973, Richard Nixon had the taping system disconnected. (The Watergate Story) A few days later, Nixon refused to turn over the presidential tape recordings. Nixon eventually realized that he should turn over the tapes. When the tapes were being inspected, an 18 ½ minute gap was found in the White House tapes. The House committee voted by large margins to recommend impeachment. On April 30th, 1974, The White House released more than 1,200 pages of the Nixon tapes. On July 24th, 1974, the Supreme Court ruled that Nixon must turn the tapes in. The supreme court decided 8-0 that executive privilege did not apply to the White House tapes. On August 8th, 1974, Richard Nixon became the first U.S. President to resign. In September of 1974, Gerald ford chose to grant Nixon a full pardon for the crimes he had committed. At this point, everyone knew that what Nixon did was wrong and that he did the right thing when he resigned.
