You're using encryption as a buzz word, all your messages in a messenger, Telegram, VK in case of russia, are encrypted and aren't sent as plain text. To have them actually safe is to use something as Briar but that is just paranoia, even in the hole that is russia you don't expect to become a horrible publicity stunt to show the "greatness of the motherland" the next day, and no one does. And same reason as Minecraft server logs are stored as plain text, not everyone is paranoid.

Using the levels of encryption you’re talking about only gives reason to be more suspicious about you trying to hide something, though. And the police don’t usually fibd chat logs because of a lack of encryption- they find them by just confiscating your devices, as was done in this story

So, yet again, the entire reason as to why this happened was not because it was a genuine threat but because the government is an authoritarian dictatorship and Russia is genuinely not a very great place to live in. I remember when a guy said he would kill another guy in Minecraft, even though he was MILES away from him, posted about it on 4chan of all places and got arrested for it.

Im Russian and Ive overheard this story on TV once when my mom was watching it. Apparently they did have history of creating primitive explosives of some kind which gave FSB credibility? thank you so much, as a distant friend of one of the persons involved and the one who did part of the investigation about the true cause of the case back then I appreciate that you covered this absurd topic. Russia also had several cases of banning websites that explained the crafting process of minecraft TNT block, like wikia and forum posts, and terrorism-ish accusations for the kids who posted such things, even though I don't oppose such politics for apparent reasons that's not absolutely clever considering there's no gunpowder-dropping creepers in Russia
