The Entire History Of Minecraft's Stolen Album...
C418 has had one of his three Minecraft albums stored in the back of Minecraft's Original Soundtrack Vault for Years and the real story behind it has never been released, Until now. I Spent about 200 hours creating this video and every element in it so if you could sub or follow elsewhere it would really mean a lot.

I don't think any of the new music is bad, but there is something that's always been slightly off about it. C418 has a very specific sound that isn't like anyone else, and I really hope that someday, we get to hear his third album. Also, I know that Minecraft Story Mode's soundtrack isn't really "Minecraft", but I still like it for what it is. Again, it's not bad music, but different from C418.

Yeah, I find they don’t fit, and it seems like they just play over and over again (possibly due to being biome-specific since you don’t leave your biome while building your base) while not being as repeat-friendly as C418’s music. I don’t dislike the new music, but I don’t like it either, and it becomes a little annoying to hear it repeat itself for the third time. And it’s not just nostalgia either, since I actually liked Volume Beta even when it was new. Honestly, it feels a little like when Super Meat Boy got new music after the bad blood between Edmund McMillen and Baranowsky. The new composers may be very talented and may have proven that in previous games, but here their music just feels out of place.
@MaoRatto
@MaoRatto 5 ай бұрын
Here is the thing... It doesn't fit to be honest as Minecraft itself is very repetive, but doesn't mean it is bad. When you have not very "loop friendly" songs it sticks out like a sore thumb. I would love an option to disable newer songs and keep purely the older songs. If made that a staple so that people don't complain about X. songs in the go or Y. Songs. @@Key-Knight87 It's also a case of. Have a group of people enjoy X songs from 2009 till now. It's a slap to the face. Biome specific songs are a bad idea in my opinion as if you are a builder this makes it irritating while if you are an adventurer this works. The best approach is enable vs. disable per album and songs. As minecraft to the core is a Sandbox.

Fully agree. I think Minecraft has just been around for long enough that people are beginning to get blinded by nostalgia. I adore Lena Raine's additions to the OST. I also feel like a little kid again every time I hear songs like Wet Hands and Subwoofer Lullaby. I think part of the charm of Minecraft is the childhood nostalgia mixed with new things to explore and blocks to build with every time I come back to it. If I want it to feel just like how it did when I was a kid, nobody is stopping me from selecting 1.7 from the launcher. Microsoft isn't always going to make the best choices for Minecraft, but I really dont think that allowing musicians other than C418 to contribute to the soundtrack is *destroying* the game. It's just...different. The reasons are dumb, but change in itself is not bad.
@nanderv
@nanderv 5 ай бұрын
@@LilChuunosuke But on the other hand, a lot of people come back to it for the nostalgia. I remember feeling very put off by opening minecraft again after multiple years of not playing, and getting the new music blasted in my face. It's the annoying thing of live service games: everything has to continuously be updated, instead of just allowing people to easily experience the game as-is. If they had put a nostalgia switch in the menu to only keep the music to ambient (keeping the new music in music disks, but the main themes old), it'd be a different story in my opinion.
@LilChuunosuke
@LilChuunosuke 5 ай бұрын
@nanderv the problem with the nostalgia switch is that everyone is nostalgic for a different era. Some are for alpha, for me it's 1.9.1. I still remember people complaining that horses felt too much like a mod, but the first time i ever played on PC was literal days before they were added, so I'm not really nostalgic for a minecraft without them. And they sorta *do* have one in the sense that you can quite literally go into the launcher and play any version of Minecraft you want. You can pick which version is your favorite and play that forever.

Now, i started making music for another minecraft modpack, and truth be told, it's just not the same. There've been times where i've sent like 5 tracks in a row only for the developer to tell me it's "not catchy enough" or "too simple". Kinda paints the picture here i feel like. Also, only 4k subs? @@BarnesReal I’ve been playing Minecraft since beta 1.5 and I like the songs the new artists have made and of course the original. When a new song is made and is for a music disk I expect something different and fortunately not jarring. When new music is coming I mostly worry about the ambient music that plays in the background where the music is there but not the focus of what’s going on what I personally about is with all the recent updates being about adventure/exploration that future music will no longer be calm ambient music and more grand think Breath of the Wild for an example. That’s what concerns me the most change is good especially to keep the game going but I hope we don’t lose the ambient music entirely and we’re left with something that sounds like a different game’s OST was just slapped onto Minecraft or music that’s from the uncanny valley so close but something is just off.

I agree that there is a divide between nostalgia and the ones who apreciate the change when it comes to the minecraft soundtrack and I in fact did not study music, so I can't argue about music on the same level as you. Still, I think that the anyone who listens to music can say something about how it makes them feel and even if they can't pinpoint where a certain difference between two pieces of music lies, they can tell if they feel different about two pieces of music or not. I think that this divide that youve shown in this video is portrayed in a more extreme way, than it should be... Maybe I interpreted the "If you hear the whole reason, you'll never touch minecraft again" from the intro too seriously, but I still got some points to criticize (not hate), so I wrote a comment somewhere down in this comment section...

I love C418’s music, it shaped my childhood and is very important to me, but I think it’s unfair to compare Lena Raine (or any of the other composers) to him. They’re entirely seperate people with unique styles and personalities, so of course it’s gonna be different. I don’t think they “tried and failed” to replicate him, they just injected their own styles into the soundtrack, which provides a larger scope of emotion to the game. Besides, Minecraft is all about creating whatever you want, so it’s okay for the music to be diverse. That’s my opinion, anyway ❤
@rheokalyke367
@rheokalyke367 5 ай бұрын
Lena Raine didn't try to replicate C418 at all. Honestly, just listen to the Celeste OST, specifically "Quiet and Falling". You'll immediately notice that they fit very well with Lena's Nether tracks almost interchangably. You could easily slot the nether Nether Tracks into Celeste and Celeste tracks into the nether and it wouldn't feel out of place. Which IMO shows just how good of a composer Lena is, being able to make good music in her own identity.
@Wallis_2001
@Wallis_2001 5 ай бұрын
@@rheokalyke367 Yup, couldn’t agree more. And that’s why I think the expectation that the community put on Lena to replace C418 was very unrealistic. I mean, she technically took his place as the main composer, but people were acting like they wanted her to emulate his style or something, which wouldn’t have worked and probably would’ve been weird. I’m totally okay with people disliking her songs in the Minecraft soundtrack, it’s just this particular critique of her music that feels misguided to me.

While I agree that Microsoft's greed is a problem in the development of Minecraft I feel there's a bit too much hostility towards the other artists and their work in the game. I have truly liked all of the new OST, and while it's a shame that those artists don't own the rights to their works, it doesn't feel right to direct any amount of blame at them. Otherwise I enjoyed the video, very well researched/put together and I liked the cycling cast of narrators!

I actually really like that they're getting other artists to make music for Minecraft. The way I see it, Minecraft is a community game, so allowing its community to make music for it is a beautiful thing. Plus, I actually think lena raine did an excellent job composing her tracks. One of my personal favorites of hers is Aerie. It's beautifully sad, yet calm and even nostalgic, in a way. Heck, even A Familiar Room by Aaron Cherof and Comforting Memories by Kumi Tanioka are both beautiful tracks with a similar feeling to them. C418 had a gift, but he wasn't the only one.

Lena's other tracks (the ones that aren't on the discs) actually fit fairly well with the vibe C418 set up. It's slightly different, but I feel like that's just a natural evolution of the music with the game as a whole. Songs like Aerie and Infinite Amethyst have a relaxed mellow vibe that C418 all but paved the way for, and don't feel out of place whatsoever
@MnemonicHeadTrip

I would still argue that Lena simply does not know how to make ambient music to the same degree that C418 did. I don't have an issue with the evolution of the sound (Wending and Left to Bloom are actually as close to what I can imagine "new" minecraft music being and I enjoy it) but I still think that it dwells in the forefront far too much to fit what we've come to expect from minecraft's music. I think it draws far too much attention to itself during gameplay when it should really just be background music that you almost forget is there

I really love the songs from the new artists, "firebugs" being one of my favorites. But C418 has an irreplaceable style, his ambient music filled my childhood and shaped the type of music I make and listen to today. I prefer his music over the modern stuff because it simultaneously has the ability to slip into the background while you're playing or gaming, but then consume you once you take a step away to see your finished build, to look over the landscape, to fill the silence... it is beautiful. Somehow it is beautiful, melancholic, cheerful, and every emotion in between all at once. Somehow despite not being overwhelmingly complex, it reaches into your heart and pulls at a string of emotions that are more complex than the simple melody itself.

I don't like how this video tries to validate people pitting C418 and Lena against each other. Lena creating music for the game doesn't decrease the value or impact of C418's music. Nor does c418's irreplaceable style dimish the value of Lena's contributions. The enemy here is Microsoft slowly morphing Minecraft over the years. Stop trying to act like individual artists trying something different is a bad thing. It's Microsoft's fault for making C418 leaves, not these new artists. I share the frustration over C418's treatment, but dragging other artists into the issue is just immature.

I took a ~5-year break from Minecraft and when I played again it was actually Modded Minecraft so when I started to hear new music tracks that stood out negatively I assumed they were from a mod but instead, it was new music that had been added to the game since I last played. Songs like "Pigstep" and "Otherside," which I guess many new players love, sound very unfitting to me and made me turn off the music multiple times. One topic that I wish was brought up was about how simplistic music is really hard to make memerable and most of the newer tracks are good but not the fantastic music that c418 produced. They took care to try and immate the genre with everything except the music discs which just proves how impactful c418 and his music truly is. It reminds me of citypop where the music generationally pranrd and has failed to be truely replicated.
