I don’t dislike the new music, but I don’t like it either, and it becomes a little annoying to hear it repeat itself for the third time. And it’s not just nostalgia either, since I actually liked Volume Beta even when it was new. The new composers may be very talented and may have proven that in previous games, but here their music just feels out of place.

Fully agree. I think Minecraft has just been around for long enough that people are beginning to get blinded by nostalgia. I adore Lena Raine's additions to the OST. I also feel like a little kid again every time I hear songs like Wet Hands and Subwoofer Lullaby. I think part of the charm of Minecraft is the childhood nostalgia mixed with new things to explore and blocks to build with every time I come back to it. If I want it to feel just like how it did when I was a kid, nobody is stopping me from selecting 1.7 from the launcher. Microsoft isn't always going to make the best choices for Minecraft, but I really dont think that allowing musicians other than C418 to contribute to the soundtrack is *destroying* the game. It's just...different. The reasons are dumb, but change in itself is not bad.
@nanderv11 ай бұрын
@@LilChuunosuke But on the other hand, a lot of people come back to it for the nostalgia. I remember feeling very put off by opening minecraft again after multiple years of not playing, and getting the new music blasted in my face. It's the annoying thing of live service games: everything has to continuously be updated, instead of just allowing people to easily experience the game as-is. If they had put a nostalgia switch in the menu to only keep the music to ambient (keeping the new music in music disks, but the main themes old), it'd be a different story in my opinion.
@LilChuunosuke11 ай бұрын
@nanderv the problem with the nostalgia switch is that everyone is nostalgic for a different era. Some are for alpha, for me it's 1.9.1. I still remember people complaining that horses felt too much like a mod, but the first time i ever played on PC was literal days before they were added, so I'm not really nostalgic for a minecraft without them. And they sorta *do* have one in the sense that you can quite literally go into the launcher and play any version of Minecraft you want. You can pick which version is your favorite and play that forever.

There's a good reason for Microsoft wanting to have the full rights to the music within their games: Licensing issues further down the line. Even though we all doubt that C418 would pull out of his licensing agreement with them for Minecraft, they cannot use his music in any other spinoff game because it is not licensed for those. So they HAD to have new songs created which could tie the IPs together. Furthermore, licensing problems with music are the number one reason why older games get pulled from digital storefronts. It happened to GTA3 (which has been re-uploaded with some audio tracks removed), it has happened to Spec Ops: The Line, and many more games. Sometimes the publisher can renew a license, but a lot of times the music licenses are time-based and will run out eventually - and often the publishers then say "nah, it's not worth the money anymore" and rather pull the game from storefronts. If the publisher owns the rights to use the tracks within the game indefinitely, this cannot happen. Also, creating a piece for a specific software is generally considered normal in the business world. If it is a piece with a high enough "creative value", at least in most of Europe the creator always retains the "creators rights" to the piece, i.e. he will often still be recognized as the creator by name etc... even if it was made as a result of a work contract. This can lead to wobbly legal situations like UK companies having to shut down fanmade creations from Germany, because the makers could not transfer those "creator rights" to the UK company (impossible by German Law, if you create something you are the "Urheber" by default if it wasn't part of a contract to create this specific thing for a company while under salary). But in the UK, if you allow others to "use" your IP in a different field to create something, you might lose the right to forbid further people or companies from creating more in that regard, even if they charge money for it. So if GW back in the past before they made videos/movies would allow a fan-film from Germany to use their Warhammer IP, then they might open the floodgates for third parties to produce Warhammer TV shows and movies without having the legal rights to stop them anymore. And this brings us back full circle to the C418-situation. Microsoft is acutely aware of the problems that licensed music can create further down the line, and they were fixated on not letting this problem grow any further. Imagine if they continued to have C418 create music for Minecraft under the same licensing model, but lets say in 3-4 years he decides: Nah, I don't like the latest update, I don't want to extend my contract anymore. They would then have a short timeframe to replace ALL of the music, and this would create a huge backlash both ways. So they are acting pretty smart in my book. Introducing new music piece by piece which is tied ingame to specific situations/biomes, the older tracks will still play on random in between, but not as often anymore (because there is simply more and more music in the game now so each track gets played less). You still get that ping of nostalgia when one of the older tracks plays, but you are also hearing the new ones and slowly get used to them.

When new music is coming I mostly worry about the ambient music that plays in the background where the music is there but not the focus of what’s going on what I personally about is with all the recent updates being about adventure/exploration that future music will no longer be calm ambient music and more grand think Breath of the Wild for an example. That’s what concerns me the most change is good especially to keep the game going but I hope we don’t lose the ambient music entirely and we’re left with something that sounds like a different game’s OST was just slapped onto Minecraft or music that’s from the uncanny valley so close but something is just off.

To me, it should have been all of them together. C418 produced music that got you lost in whatever moment you were in, in the world you generated, explored, developed, and created as your own. Lena Raine put the energy into it, and our third guy put another feel into the game. They should have kept C418 as the guy to keep producing those tracks while the others produced tracks to cover other parts in what is now a more complex game…

While I agree that Microsoft's greed is a problem in the development of Minecraft I feel there's a bit too much hostility towards the other artists and their work in the game. I have truly liked all of the new OST, and while it's a shame that those artists don't own the rights to their works, it doesn't feel right to direct any amount of blame at them. I agree that there is a divide between nostalgia and the ones who apreciate the change when it comes to the minecraft soundtrack and I in fact did not study music, so I can't argue about music on the same level as you. Still, I think that the anyone who listens to music can say something about how it makes them feel and even if they can't pinpoint where a certain difference between two pieces of music lies, they can tell if they feel different about two pieces of music or not. I think that this divide that youve shown in this video is portrayed in a more extreme way, than it should be... Maybe I interpreted the "If you hear the whole reason, you'll never touch minecraft again" from the intro too seriously, but I still got some points to criticize (not hate), so I wrote a comment somewhere down in this comment section...

To be honest, I don't mind the new composers but c418's music is the one I return for. As an example, I played for over 2 hours yesterday and only got Lena Raine and Aaron Cherovs music tracks. Sometimes getting the same ones back to back. And I've found this a lot over the last few months when I've played. It almost always starts when I load in with the same Lena Raine track. I don't know if it's something to do with having daylight cycle off, as I like creative building and struggle to see my switch even on full brightness. But it just felt more hollow for it. I just want some of the old tracks mixed in or ideally the other way round.

This video is so clearly based mainly on totally fabricated drama. Such a small minority of people actually flat-out hate the new music (though they've clearly found this video lol), and I'm actually yet to come across a single person who is actually opposed to C418 making more music. These nostalgia and change teams and completely imagined. The newer musicians have created to music that is completely within the style of the original tracks, and in efforts to prove otherwise this video comes across as extremely dishonest by comparing the newer music discs to the older ambient soundtrack. Please take a listen to cat and chirp and the rest of the original discs. They are not ambient. Saddens me that so many people will blindly hate people and their art just because it's marginally novel. Be mad at Mojang for their scummy corporate choices, not the musicians and not their music.
@Wallis_200111 ай бұрын
I love C418’s music, it shaped my childhood and is very important to me, but I think it’s unfair to compare Lena Raine (or any of the other composers) to him. They’re entirely seperate people with unique styles and personalities, so of course it’s gonna be different. I don’t think they “tried and failed” to replicate him, they just injected their own styles into the soundtrack, which provides a larger scope of emotion to the game. Besides, Minecraft is all about creating whatever you want, so it’s okay for the music to be diverse. That’s my opinion, anyway ❤
@rheokalyke36711 ай бұрын
Lena Raine didn't try to replicate C418 at all. Honestly, just listen to the Celeste OST, specifically "Quiet and Falling". You'll immediately notice that they fit very well with Lena's Nether tracks almost interchangably. You could easily slot the nether Nether Tracks into Celeste and Celeste tracks into the nether and it wouldn't feel out of place. Which IMO shows just how good of a composer Lena is, being able to make good music in her own identity.
@Wallis_200111 ай бұрын
@@rheokalyke367 Yup, couldn’t agree more. And that’s why I think the expectation that the community put on Lena to replace C418 was very unrealistic. I mean, she technically took his place as the main composer, but people were acting like they wanted her to emulate his style or something, which wouldn’t have worked and probably would’ve been weird. I’m totally okay with people disliking her songs in the Minecraft soundtrack, it’s just this particular critique of her music that feels misguided to me.

I would still argue that Lena simply does not know how to make ambient music to the same degree that C418 did. I don't have an issue with the evolution of the sound (Wending and Left to Bloom are actually as close to what I can imagine "new" minecraft music being and I enjoy it) but I still think that it dwells in the forefront far too much to fit what we've come to expect from minecraft's music. I think it draws far too much attention to itself during gameplay when it should really just be background music that you almost forget is there

There is just so much emotion and meaning in every track and the game would be incomplete without it. No one has or ever will meet his level of talent and perfection.

It is so hard to willingly listen to sweden (by itself when not playing) without getting sad, EVEN back then

I really love the songs from the new artists, "firebugs" being one of my favorites. But C418 has an irreplaceable style, his ambient music filled my childhood and shaped the type of music I make and listen to today. I prefer his music over the modern stuff because it simultaneously has the ability to slip into the background while you're playing or gaming, but then consume you once you take a step away to see your finished build, to look over the landscape, to fill the silence... it is beautiful. Somehow it is beautiful, melancholic, cheerful, and every emotion in between all at once. Somehow despite not being overwhelmingly complex, it reaches into your heart and pulls at a string of emotions that are more complex than the simple melody itself.
