My grandfather was my hero. He was a cook in the Korean war and never saw combat due to his entire outfit requesting that he never be taken out of the kitchen. He was a very detail oriented man, always made his bed right after he showered when he got up. He was tough as nails too, he walked like 7 miles every day and had terrible knee joints. Every day, I think about how I should've visited him more and how much I miss his valuable life advice....

The whole syndicate side story was the best part of the show. And probably the most profound. Economic interests will always trump mortality on the world stage. He didn't care who did what, as long as it kept the merchandise moving. He didn't care if a trade made or lost money, as long as he was the one making it. He had more power than all the generals of all the nations put together. He could make decisions no one else could, and he could command both sides of the conflict by the end.

My dad was a supply officer in the Army and made sure to feed the men well as well as anytime the company was assigned engineers. well after a while anytime the rotation went out with the engineers they'd fight to be put with my dad's company because it was just that much better. ( I forget the proper terms of military organization). He was a scrounger and would visit the multi unit decommission depot religiously to see what other people were throwing away that he could use for bargaining chips. He has some stories of finding very valuable things and filling out the paperwork only for and investigative unit to seize whatever it was because of what someone overlooked. They were more than willing to have it destroyed, but not willing to reassign it to a armored unit. To this day the man patrols the local pawn shops, flea markets and what have you to find great deals. In hindsight he could have setup an ebay store and made some money.

I was this guy. However, different. Platoons regularly made fun of a mess chick, I felt sorry for her and it became part of a ritual to go to the mess, get served by her, have basic conversation, get her to laugh. She was unfortunately disfigured hence her being teased etc. Long story short she eventually would provide me a lot of extra foods in which I used to provide my platoon and staff and even started bribing my PTI's, OC, RSM with it. I kid you guys not, I felt invincible in that base, I was untouchable. I passed every test without sitting it, I got to do my own PT, I got to miss the boring long sessions of continual repeats, everyone knew me, officers had me calling them by first names and not salute unless others were around, I got to knock off early many times whenever I wanted most the time. Only down side was the some of the guys would be jealous understandably but I would try and get a large cake or 2 now and then to share with everyone to remind them why I get away with this, free food bought happiness for all. AND ALL because of that beautiful soul of a woman I helped laugh, thank you, thank you, thank you to her.

An old saying... "A closed mouth doesn't eat." ...The idea is that YOU have to "sell yourself" anyway you can if you want to get ahead because nobody else is going to speak up for you. People who get ahead in life are usually the ones taking chances selling their abilities and skills to someone who can give them a chance to prove their usefulness. They grow from there, leaning more and more skills so that they can later have the power to negotiate a better position or pay from their employer. Having the power to negotiate a better life for yourself is an incredible thing to have.
@michaelmoore2679
@michaelmoore2679 Ай бұрын
That also leads to an environment where people get ahead based on their ability to brown nose rather than their actual competency with the job. We also need to encourage people in higher positions to check the work and ethic of those under them. Many people work very hard and to a higher standard but are too humble or awkward to tell everyone how great they are.

@@angieponders3844 That was my unit, but the good chow wasn't for us exactly. We were an infantry unit that simply benefited from the great food everyone else received Ft Myer was a model post that housed members from all branches in the inter-service barracks. Food had to meet the standards for those branches and also be an example for the rest of the Army.

I mean to be fair an army marches on it's stomach and having good food is a pretty decent way of boosting guys moral. And being a mess officer is also a way to start a pretty sweet smuggling/black market operation on the side when the commanding officers are distracted by the good food you bring in.

Besides the Army, many sailors viewed a ship’s quality in living based on their food. Ships like Enterprise, CV-6, was viewed not only as legendary, but beloved by much of the Navy and carrier pilots. Many men were very eager and hoping to serve on the Big E. The food was said to be very good, and the morale was kept high. Though, sailors and pilots alike knew, if they were served a premium meal, like steak and eggs, or lobster, it meant they weren’t coming back.

this kid reminds me of when i worked in a big night club that had a restaurant go karts and golf outside and a waterfront patio. i went up to the bar tenders and asked them if i could get them free food would they exchange it for free drinks they agreed i went to the restaurant told them the same they agreed i went around to all the services and all i did was exchange one for another , now i had free drinks free food free golf free everything. my point is you can get everything from nothing just use your brains!!

When I was in Iraq, my unit ran out of water and we were drinking Gatorade. For over a week, nothing but Gatorade. My squad leader, an E4, put a team together (I was on it) and we snuck into the army base and stole a crap ton of their water.

Milo Minderbinder. If you have not read this book, you should. The original name was supposed to be Catch 13. For some reason, Joseph Hellar's publisher wanted him to change it. Catch 22 is now the name.

If he was mess officer, with direct access to control supply and requisitions, he could start his black market operations without being questioned by the commanding officer while he is distracted by the food.
