Hugh's work ethic and whole approach to acting is very refreshing too. He doesn't turn his nose up at at projects. Instead he looks as each role as a paying job. He's made it clear that he often takes roles as a means of supporting his family. And, when Hugh takes a job he takes it very seriously. For House he almost always walked with the cane and kept his accent the entire day. He also had the reputation of being first to show up, last to leave. He'd stick around for scenes he wasn't even in. And, he was equally willing to receive advice as he was to give it.

@Doc_Valparaiso
@Doc_Valparaiso 26 күн бұрын
@@Woodman-Spare-that-tree I would suspect the same. However, I would add that if you met him that he would like you more if you *didn't* ask him to do an American accent. I say that because I've seen him on late night shows and when the host asks him to be House for a a few seconds his reaction is usually something like "Aww, come on, I'm not at work right now." He kind of playfully and politely declines. I'd bet that he'd do it more for fans than tv hosts. But, (this is just my take) I'd suspect that if you just talked to him without asking for an impression that he'd appreciate the interaction much more. I'm not a celeb by any means. But, a lot of people recognize me from where I work. So, I can have some empathy here. I can be pretty far from home and someone might say "there's the ____ guy". I'll smile and wave and tell my coworkers about it sometimes. But, it's always nicer just to have someone who wants to have a real conversation, or just have an organic interaction. Like I said in my comment, Hugh approaches shows and movies like the jobs that they are. I don't mind a little work talk. But, if someone opens up about something about themselves to me I feel pretty good about that. I think that's just how most regular people operate.

Two Fun Facts: 1) The producer of the show wanted a real American actor and when he saw those tapes he was like "THAT's what I'm talking about". He had to be told that Hugh Laurie is an Englishman. 2) Hugh Larie only scimmed the script and thought that James Wilson was the main character and House was just the snarky lancer comedy side-kick. Of the two doctors, obviously the morally upstanding, nice doctor would be the lead and the mean snarker would be his foil. He didn't know House was the main character. That was also because the show did not have a title yet. Source: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q6qtaqNpr92hjaM

What I find fascinating is that he was already deploying that level of characterisation in a tiny, part-scene, first-impressions video audition. Yeah, I know it sounds kind of dumb to sound surprised that a professional actor is displaying professionalism, but this early in the process to be already inhabiting House, down to everything other than limping with a cane and saying "It's never lupus", is quite jaw-dropping.

Hmm, from my experience as a patient in the UK, doctors here (at least NHS doctors - there’s no affordable care act here and I was literally turned down for health insurance- they wouldn’t touch me lol) the doctors are cold, and often unsympathetic, however they are pretty polite usually. I guess that was your point though, doctors aren’t like the hero types you see on shows like Chicago hospital or whatever the fuck it’s called (what happened to Dick Wolf ffs, law and order was great, but all this Chicago shit is, well, shit). Anyway, some doctors are alright, a lot are arrogant cunts, which I guess the team on House are, but, at least they have a sense of humour (maybe not Cameron or that fucking Australoid)

You know what's funny though. When you really dig down into it, did he really have questionable ethics? Let me preface this by saying that western ethics have some major flaws that I vehemently disagree with, but lets use one theory to test this. Yes House had addiction issues and was a jerk, but most of the time his actions were for the greater good. Utilitarianism determines right from wrong focusing on the outcomes. The most ethical choice is the one that creates the greatest good for the greatest number of people. So one could argue that although he wasn't bright and sunshiny about it, he did take the most ethical route.

I kept looking at him thinking "I've seen him before somewhere", and I was stunned when it eventually clicked.

@@SeyrenLA Yeah, apparently he is (although I haven't see it). I had no idea he was such a good actor, he was pretty much typecast in the UK back in the 90s, as in, he was pretty much playing the same role. Unbelievable audition. Apologizes for his appearance in his own accent and then snaps perfectly into the character we all came to love. And they kept the disheveled appearance for 8 seasons. He did not know it was the lead role and had barely skimmed the script. David Shore must have been knocked out when he saw his idea take form in this audition. They call him up and the rest is history. He didn't think it would stick, and barely unpacked his suitcase for the first season. What a gem.

Ok but physiologically, Hugh Laurie has big wide eyes, which are subconsciously associated with curiosity and observation. His brows are low and straight, which gives him a natural judgemental and critical appearance, those two things create the face of someone who knows something you don't. His face is long and thin, subconsciously that represents stubbornness and decisiveness, maturity, and wisdom, unlike round faces that are associated with youth, carefreeness, and sensitivity. Hugh Laurie's face was LITERALLY made to play House, unbelievable, this man is awesome.

I think you're completely right (no irony). But ... have you seen how completely convincing he was as Bertie Wooster? With that same face! What a genius. What's awesome about this casting is that the producer of the show said he didnt want a brittish actor doing an american accent because they wouldnt look really american. and then when he saw this audition he said: THIS IS WHAT I WANT! THIS AMERICAN ACTOR! So the producers cast a brittish actor thinking he was american and said actor was cast as the leading role thinking he was a supporting actor and Wilson was the leading man

Remember that Hugh Laurie is British. Besides having to memorise his lines, besides acting (feeling what the character must be feeling, the facial expressions, etc...) he also had to speak in an American accent. I must admit that I didn't know him before "Dr House" and had no idea that he wasn't American.
