I stay away from terms like best or GOAT but mark is certainly my favourite guitarist. I saw dire straits just the once when I was 19 in ‘91 they are still the best live band I have seen.

. Gracias por compartirla!

The entire album "Love Over Gold" is excellent. Even the worst song from this album, the first one on the second side of the vinyl - "Industrial Desease" - is worth every penny. In addition, the studio version has enormous dynamics, impossible to achieve at a concert. The entire album is the highest achievement in Dire Straits' career.

Should listen back to back with Tina Turner's Private Dancer (written by Mark Knopfler)

When Dire Straits released their debut album in 1978, it was unlike anything else at the time and still is. They were “their own” genre. Rock was the mainstream music and the 80’s Metal was just about to takeover. There was something special about Dire Straits though. I believe that their popularity continues to grow to this day. I have been into the SACD high resolution music format for several years now and I’d bet that Dire Straits is one of the biggest selling artists on SACDs. I prefer the studio versions over the live tracks. A lot of people seem to prefer the live, but maybe they have never heard the studios. Mark likes to ad lib A LOT when playing live. I always judged bands in concert by how good they can play their songs live, based on what they did in the studio. I bought Dire Straits live album, Alchemy, and after about 3 songs I stopped the album and never listened to it again. 🙂

There was one song on this album that Mark felt was too "feminine" and he decided to offer it to a certain Tina Turner. The title was Private Dancer, the rest is history.

But is is also Dire Straits playing on Private Dancer, except for Mark, Jeff Beck plays the solo, but the rest of the track is all Dire Straits

Distinct, I can always pick out a Mark Knopfler song. He is one of the greats. One every street is one of my favorites!

Its important to note that when the debut album dropped, music critics raved about the freshness of their sound. One commented that he played guitar like Hank Marvin would have, on LSD... When Communique came out, it was criticized because it sounded the same as the first album. One critic commented that they evidently had nothing else to offer. Mark took umbrage at that, and every subsequent album has been different to the last. Including his solo stuff. Legend!!

Total agreement with you about this band! If you ever have a chance there are many videos of Mark and Eric Clapton playing together live, from the late 80s to the mid 90s.

Hahaha. Anyone who doesn't like Knopfler has a screw loose 😉. That, or is filled by utter jealousy of the man's genius. Lol. Master and virtuoso. The ratio of lovers to haters falls mostly to the former. Also, it's obviously subjective so that's fine of course. There will never be another band like Dire Straits. Anyone who wastes time on music they "hate" is a weird thing. Strange indeed. It's an art form. Another great reaction dude

Knew you would like this Nick! A very peaceful song, fitting for this time of year. Outstanding production - not familiar with these musicians, but they are incredible. I’ve been occasionally trying to convert you regarding The Rolling Stones. I know a song for you and Lex that may do the trick!

Great choice - thanks, JK! And, Nick, I happen to be in the camp that thinks Knopfler is a phenomenal guitarist and there is nothing at all wrong with his vocals. This album is top notch!

Thank you for this good reaction. I like the fact that he sings like he does. It dosen`t have to be in the upper registers. This soft singing can be can also be powerful. I just listened to the the album he did with Chet Atkins. Don`t miss that one.

Mark is born in Glasgow but raised in Blythe (near Newcastle) in the North of England. His accent is quite pronounced in conversation but not in his music, except for the solo track “Why aye man”. Which is a well known Geordie phrase. The track has a German connection and features heavily in the lyrics thanks to a UK tv show called "Auf Wiedersehen Pet”

The best track from one of the finest albums of 1982, which was a year CHOCK FULL of outstanding LPs. Nick (and Lex) - you need to hear this whole LP, as well as Knopfler's soundtrack to the movie Local Hero.

The whole album is genius. The next and last track, “It Never Rains,” takes on a very different vibe. Mark is apparently a little miffed at someone. Hard to decipher. But the icing is the guitar solo in the last 3.5 minutes or so… among his best of any album.

DS played all songs from the brilliant album LOG. I liked It Never Rains back then, but I think the instrumental middle section is missing something. That's why I used to research whether DS even played this song live to make a comparison. Apparently the song was played at the beginning of the UK tour in 1983 in Sheffield and Birmingham (the audience received only poor sound quality), but no longer in London and Central Europe. Do you know a good live recording of INR? Have fun with all kinds of good music and all the best!!!

It Never Rains is an overshadowed gem. It's one of my favourites. The song begins light and sweet, but by the outro, it's bitter and venomous. Fantastic solo!!

Shame you didn’t do this reaction with Alex. She would have loved this. Surely one of the most beautiful songs ever created by Mark and his band. It is an absolute classic. I know he and the band are known for so many great hits but this track, to me, is a masterpiece. It lives within me since the first day I bought the vinyl on its release. Telegraph Road is a masterpiece Of course, but this track transcends it for me. Personal opinion.

Yeah... some people don't like them. But what's "like" but your taste for things? And it doesn't really matter. I don not like a bunch of what I consider extremely quality music, but not my cuppa. So...one thing is: musical quality Other thing: our taste for music. Ps.: I also love and have fun with a lot of low quality music... The idea is: have fun and enjoy. Thanks man, love your channel.
