@@davexenos9196 I think she meant the 'technological' sounds that the song utilized. I'll also add that ELO was quite technical in their approach to sound/instrument mixing.

For younger people who might not understand, he is on a payphone speaking to an operator, who is manually dialing in the call. Long distance calls were very expensive back then, and you wouldn't have that much change in your pocket, so the operator had to take a credit card number to bill you for the call. He wants to sit there and let it ring, and the operator is likely not trying to waste her time while he does it. (Yes, it was always a her. That's just how things were then, fair or not.)
@davidmcdougall8595
@davidmcdougall8595 19 сағат бұрын
Yes! And I remember telling the operator the number you wanted to call, and her telling you how much money to put into the phone. When she'd heard the right number of coins drop then she's put the call through for a specific amount of time. Then she'd cut you off if you began to go over the time.

ELO has so many great songs and your comments are spot on. The song pre-dates caller ID and answering machines. If there was no answer after 10 rings, it was time to hang up. If you were excited to call someone, by the time it rang 6 times, anxiety started to set in. By the eighth ring there was a desperation.

This song has such a great balance between the sad verses and the uplifting and joyful chorus. The chorus has that 'Doo-Wop' element to it that is just so fun and universally loved. As it plays on you begin to notice more and more the orchestra strings and such playing into it. Like some other bands such as Steely Dan what on the surface seems pretty simply just feel good pop but it's so effective because of the great arrangements and more advanced usage of notes and chords unusual to pop or rock and more akin to jazz. Subtle but somewhat complex or sophisticated touches can make a massive difference in how we experience the music emotionally. It makes all the difference in the world between what would otherwise be a good song and what is now a great one that moves us deeply and lives on forever as a brilliant musical masterpiece. We don't need to understand all that though to just appreciate and enjoy it.

Jeff Lynn (leader and vocalist) went on to be a music producer. He produced albums for many, most notably Tom Petty, and George Harrison, his future band mates for the temporary band, The Traveling Wilburys.

Can't go wrong with ELO. Great pick, Amy! They have a very deep catalog to dive into. Jeff Lynne, the lead singer and only original member still with the band, also played with "The Traveling Wilburys" - made up of Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, George Harrison and Tom Petty. There's another rabbit hole to explore!

I think Stacy was in the right ballpark mentioning Pink Floyd (if she knows of Young Lust, she might have mentioned it for obvious reasons) I would say ELO can be a nice combination of Floyd and Chicago...
@lawrencea274

@Skydog722 I absolutely disagree. I've seen Pink Floyd live in concert on three different occasions. I've seen elo live, absolutely no compassion. Except for a couple sonic equivalences. They are day and night, the only thing in common, it's music. Elo is not in the same category of invention or innovation etc etc. Chicago, not even worth bringing up with Pink Floyd, but Chicago may be compared with elo strictly for being a band of similar status. You may as well compare the Beatles with the Marvelettes . Jeff Lynn from elo who joined George Harrison in the band, "The traveling Willberies" for good reason because he fit in with the Beatles music as well as Jeff Lynn doing a George Harrison tribute concert/ "While My Guitar Gently Weeps."

I think ROLL OVER BEETHOVEN was my first ELO. Jeff had violin and cello players in the frickin band. Duuuhh! Electric Light ORCHESTRA! A lot of Beatles influence. Jeff's respect for the "fab four" was later rewarded when George Harrison joined the bizzaro supergroup Traveling Wilburys. Kudos to a sister who has a clue about what a sibling might like. Happy holidays

Amy has great taste! ELO was created with an intent to incorporate elements of orchestra and classical music, along with vocalization, into their unique style of Pop music. This is definitely a rabbit hole you'll enjoy! I would try "Turn to Stone," "Don't Bring Me Down," "All Over the World," "Sweet Talkin' Woman," "Strange Magic," and the unique "Mr. Blue Sky," which is just a great "happy" song.

Younger sister knows, what is good. I was in my teen years, as I heard this for the first time. The telephone was a line to the one, you were in love with far away. And far away was about on the over part of the city. Times have changed, though distances are still in the heart and not in space.

This song has more significance to those who remember a time before the interwebs, social media, facetime, etc. Basically, a landline telephone, anchored to the wall, was the only contact people had with someone far away. Also, Electric Light Orchestra were different and unique. The mixture of pop rock and lush orchestral music created a gorgeous sound all their own. Jeff Lynne is a genius and showcases throughout all his songs.

When this came out during the disco era it hit on commercial pop with a hint of disco that you could hear from like the Bee Gees but could sneak it past us. Or poetic vocal melodies like from Queen. They had it all.

Stacy, you and your sister did a great job on your reaction. ELO definitely had a different sound than others from the 70s and 80s. Jeff Lynne also wrote a few songs for Olivia Newton-John including the song, Xanadu.

Jeff Lynne wrote all the music for that movie. He knew what Olivia Newton-John was able to sing, and he made the most of her abilities on every one of her tracks.

Your sister has good taste. Jeff Lynne, one of Rock's greatest melodist, and 'A new world record' is just incredible, part of my Top 10 of all time. "Telephone Line" has to be listened to, between the record's first song "Tightrope" and its follow-up "Rockaria" to get the full effect and make you a diehard fan. I went through the same phase at her age devouring music and classic movies. Here is a few movie suggestions she may not have seen: Billy Wilder's "Ace in the hole", Hitchcock's "Shadow of a doubt" and Akira Kurosawa's "Ikiru". By the way, among the ELO songs she enumerated, she mentioned -Don't let me down, she meant "Don't bring me down", which was probably their most overplayed song on the radio... Enjoy discovering ELO, such ear candy... Have fun!

@Stacey-you now have competition: Amy’s insights are spot on. A few points: - Most people believe ELO took over where the Beatles left off - To make a call when Jeff was a boy, an operator was in the middle of the call so songs like this are partially pleading with the Operator to “let it ring forevermore”. “Operator” by Jim Croce is similar. -Amy got a kick out of “Hello”. Lionel Ritchie made a song with the same title and similar longing in his voice. -Others have mentioned ELO songs and Jeff Lynne, incredible

A lot of the things you guys are talking about The Beatles pioneered. And what's strange about that is, Jeff Lynne, the genius behind ELO, was a huge huge Beatles fan, and he even did some collaboration with them later on.❤

That is cool, that your sister is on with you. My old girlfriend used to refer ELO's telephone line to the conversations we would have on the phone back in the day, separated by the miles between us. It certainly brings back fond memories of her we dated from 74' to 78' she wz my 1st and I wz hers. We only separated when her parents divorced and she was forced to move away with her mom, 33 yrs later we got back together and we fell in love all over again and she became my fiance when she said yes sadness came one week later when she passed in her sleep from a brain aneurysm. This song definitely links lover to lover through the telephone line. Strange Magic & roll over Beethoven are 2 other favorites of ours by ELO. Btw you can definitely tell she's your sister, you both look a lot alike. I also think the band: Queensryche's song silent lucidity sounds a lot like Pink Floyd anyway thank you for the memories, I did shed a tear with that one. 😥 ✌️
