I quoted for this overgrown yard before we were hit with all the rain so I've been trying to get here for weeks. It's dried enough for me to get out and mow down this overgrown buffalo / St Augustine grass. As always, it was worse than expected but we did take all the grass again.
I have a helper today for this clean up. It was a nice change to have someone to help with the work.

Carthic does one of the manicured lawns and he is brave enough to try one with runners as tall as you are??? Brave soul. The hazardous part is this is Landscape Archeology, literally not being able to see what exists under that mass. Two people trying different approaches to work out how to get it done. Good idea. I like that someone was thoughtful and built a ramp to the upper area. Your heroic small mower is doing well. Two talented people working on it at once, it is interesting how fast you are getting it back in shape. You two got a lot done, bit by bit it was moved to being orderly and with good lines.

Scythes work best on upright grass. A scythe would not get under the flat runners, the weight would be a problem too. A quality brush cutter, cutting down from above the weeds is a good option. Cutting side to side in this can be hard on your body and tangle the machine al the time.

I have a neighbor who didn't cut his grass and it was at least four feet tall. He finally cut it and his lawnmower kept stalling on him and he ended up using a weed wacker. It took him all day! If he had just mowed it once a week, he would have saved himself a lot of time. But noooo, he had to go golfing.

Morning Timothy, I think there was more work than we realised! It looks so much more tidy, and a few more trips with the lawn mover will bring it to perfection. Having such a pristine lawn which Carthic manages, I wonder what his thoughts were when he saw that long grass. It will be such a neat and tidy home once all the lawns are under control. Well done a pleasure to watch your techniques in mastering those overgrown properties. It is your passion, and the master as well. Take care, kind regards.

When your doing the edges walk backwards with the trimmer , it easier to get a straight line because your not throwing the grass over the edge obscuring what you're trying to cut.

It would be nice if you gave a bit of background as to why the yards are overgrown. Did the owner go out-of-town for a bit and his regular mower person just decide not to do the back yard? Did the owner get sick/injured and was only able to do the front? We don't need personal info, but the 'why' would be nice to know.

Hi Mate. Great team effort there. I don't claim that this is the best way, but cutting long grass with a blade - a good method is to undercut and let it fall, then on the return sweep keep the blade flat and kind of brush what you just cut aside to make a wind row, rather than letting the blade mulch. So cut one direction then swoosh aside on the other. It makes collecting the grass easier as you can shuffle your feet while walking into it to make a big pile which you can gather in your arms and carry away.
