Prime example is the Sopranos, Food is a MAJOR factor in the show, Tony and many other characters are shown eating constantly (the 3 main places buisness takes place is a butcher shop, an Itallian Resturaunt, and a Bar) but Tony mostly just picks at his food, stabbing at it while he talks, spinning his fork, tossing his silverware to make a point, but very few shots of him actualy eating

1) a scene can take hours to film. The food will go cold and not be very appetising 2) for continuity it's easier if things stay untouched otherwise you have problems with food vanishing and reappearing 3) because it often takes many takes people would have to eat over and over and over again. Not as fun as it might first seem. 4) it's often not even real so it can maintain the illusion of looking fresh for hours/days. Less work for the crew.
