I think Il-Nam’s final moments were very poetic. Since he’s still alive on his death bed, he’s technically still a player in the squid game, so he plays one more childhood game with the final contestant: a bet, which ties it all together with the idea of greed, gambling and fun. Nam loses the bet, dies, and is finally eliminated from the game
@knurdyob2 жыл бұрын
did he really lose though? like another comment pointed out, he proved his point to gi-hun. gi-hun asked him why he did all that, and the old man told him "because it was fun". then at the end they made a bet involving someone else's life. and gi-hun didn't help the guy freezing in the cold, he stayed in that room and played along, he became just like il-nam, betting on a human life for the sake of a stupid game

@Annabelle Norwood this show top tier acting and cast from the region; more than one hand could count ... My first comment was intended to compliment the cast, the acting and imagery carried this show tenfold but if this script was in Na or Eu it couldn't be reproduced bc the depth in casting wouldn't be realistic from "payroll budget" not from lack of talent.

Cha sang woo was about to kill his self on the bath tub and in the game he also end up killing his self. Kang seo byeok have a scene where she was talking to a guy who scammed her (the fat guy that said that he will get seo byeok mother on China), and seo byeok almost cut the scammer's neck using a knife, in the game she was also killed because sang woo slit her neck. Ali died because sangwoo stole his marbles, in episode 2 he also stole his boss money. And jang deok su was chased by some armed men on episode 2 that's why he jumped in the bridge to save his self and in the game he also died because he fell at the glass bridge.

The title of the last episode is ‘One Lucky Day’. One Lucky Day is a famous short story in Korea (published by Hyun Jin-gun in 1924). The main character "Kim Cheomji" has a sick wife and lives a poor life by dragging a rickshaw. One day, when he made a lot of money and thought it was a lucky day... He bought precious food for his wife and went home excitedly. But his wife was dead. He thought it was a "lucky day," but it is an ironic story that actually did not. I just noticed something else: Il-Nam knew that he had to lose the game of marbles, whoever his opponent/partner might be, because the next game would be too dangerous for him. Gi-Hun became his partner by coincidence (and because Gi-Hun has a good heart). BUT there would have been a second possibility: Il-Nam is the one who does not get a partner (if the number of participants is odd). He probably expected in advance that he would be the one who doesn't get a partner in this scenario because he is so old. Then the whole game would have been normal and the participants would have been told that number 1 was eliminated. Instead, Mi-nyeo (the woman) did not get a partner, but she was left alive. Maybe because Il-Nam didn't want to punish someone for his/her weakness. Or simply because he did not want to give away his power to the group. Edit: But he was probably hoping that he could take part in the marble game after all. In this case he could have rewarded his weak/kind-hearted partner with a free pass plus he could play another game. So, in the end, Il-Nam caught the best case scenario and got exactly what he wanted.

i honestly attributed most of Il-Nam's excitement and lack of fear up to just having nothing to lose. what finally made me suspicious of him was just how quickly he seemed to completely lose his mental capacity during marbels, only to wander into a closed-off area and be just out of sight when killed. and not showing his body afterwards really sealed it.

The bird’s eye camera angle after Old Man gets shot made me extremely suspicious. Immediately I looked in the bottom corner to see his bloodied body laying on the ground, but I didn’t see him nor the Soldier. I thought it was highly unlikely they could shoot and run off with his body that quickly if they actually “shot” him. Which would be even more suspicious since all dead players got placed in that box.
@Pie_Otter3 жыл бұрын
The most suspicious thing to me was not seeing a body, that's about it tbh haha. I've learned from TOO many shows-- unless I see the body with the wound, as far as I know, they're alive. And even when I do see a body with a "wound"...Doesn't mean they're dead for sure :p

He was fully available to meet the vips during the bridge game, he simply didn't show up because the writers said so lol, if he did he would have been discovered by the audience of the show. So yea, because "reasons". Edit: on a second thought, I guess "plan A" was to be excluded from the marbles game like you said, which makes sense, and he had to improvise a "plan B" in order to die during the game, but still... He was fully available to meet the vips, that was just because the writers didn't come up with another excuse.

Bruh did you guys not watch the show? It clearly shows in the final episode flashback scene that he was there when the VIPs arrived and the frontman approached him regarding the VIPs arrival, but then he says that watching the games just won't feel the same as actually having played in them and then he just leaves. Also, I don't think the initial "plan" was for him to discreetly leave before the marble game by being the odd man out. The only reason there was an odd number of players was because the doctor got caught doing the organ harvesting thing right before the marble game and got killed, otherwise there would have been an even number of players. I highly doubt they planned to catch him right in time to kill him and make it an odd number of players before the marble game. I believe the plan was always to fake kill him during the marble game, he faked his dementia so that he could go into the closed off space where he said his "house" was so that no one would see him get "killed".
@UCFKNIGHT653 жыл бұрын
My idea is he didn't believe he would've been picked for the marble game. Remember, he was sitting down, by himself in between two of the pillars. If he wasn't picked as a partner and hauled off by the guards, nobody would have assumed anything other than he had been killed, but when Gi-hun selected him, he had to find another way. If you remember at the end of the marble game, he fully admits he was lucid the whole time when he calls out Gi-hun for attempting to cheat him out of his marbles by using what he believed to be his declining mental state to change his answers, and when he comes back one year later, he talks about the darkness of humanity and people only care about themselves and would walk right over someone on the street instead of help. Up until that game, Gi-hun had done everything in his power to help him whenever he could, until it was his own life on the line, and he decided to deceive just like everyone else.

A very common trope of these "Escape room" movies, is that the creator of the game is a part of the game. So for me, it was very much telegraphed, but that's simply because I know of the tropes, so I knew how to find all the hints for it. Easiest one to notice. He basically knew/understood all the games and were very gleeful every single time. He's the only character we knew that wasn't an extra, that we never got to see the corpse of. So obvious hint that he wasn't dead.

I think he was genuinely participating in the death games, and could have died for real in any of the games. The reason for him dropping out alive at the marble game was he didn't actually lose, he let Gifun win with cheating, and thus it was unfair. That's why he has a rematch with him later. Also, it would be unfair for him to participate in the glass bridge game, because he knew the order you go in is important, and might have even known which ones were real or fake. There was a very heavy emphasis on the theme of being fair, and any of the other games reflected that. The only game that could have been unfair was the honeycomb one, but he didn't choose the shape, he let the group he was in choose it for him.

I don’t believe that Sang Woo killed himself only because he wanted Gi Hyun to have the money. Knowing how Squid Game was written to show humanity in an uncomfortable and painful way, I don’t think this ‘happily ever after’ ending makes sense. Instead, I think Sang Woo’s death reveals something more than self-sacrifice. When Gi Hyun asked him to walk away from the game together, Sangwoo knew he had 3 options. Option 1: Kill Gi Hyun and win. This was obviously not possible due to the state of his condition. Option 2: Walk away from the game along with Gi Hyun. This would mean that the money would have gone to the deceased’s families (this was mentioned earlier in the series) and the two would get nothing. They would have returned to their lives with $0 in their pockets, still facing the same looming debt. Sang Woo would have never chosen this because, as we all know, he was desperate and at his wit’s end. He had already almost committed suicide before. Option 3: If Sangwoo couldn’t overpower Gi Hyun and win, and if he didn’t want to walk away with nothing, he had to make Gi Hyun win somehow. And so, he did. With his final words, we realise why Sang Woo is desperate to die. He wants Gi Hyun to use the money to take care of his mother. He cannot walk away, because doing so would mean he and his mother would get nothing. By dying, at least his mother would be cared for. Sang Woo’s life and death illustrates the human condition and the lengths one would go to when they are desperate. His cruel acts throughout the series almost begin to seem not-so-cruel anymore. This is because, from his final words, the audience is reminded that he, like everyone else in the game, just desperately wanted to provide for himself and for his loved ones. Edited (since some people aren’t getting the gist of what I’m trying to say 🥲): The point of my comment was to delve deeper into Sang Woo as a character. I’m trying to highlight that though he may be seen as a barbaric, manipulative man, his last words (that may be overlooked as something that was said in passing) reveals who he truly is and makes his transgressions seem almost forgivable. I’m positing that Sang Woo illustrates that people who do evil things are not as cruel as they seem. Some are forced into it. Some deserve sympathy. Some even deserve compassion.

This series did an amazing job at making me suspicious of the old man. First, he’s way to happy to be there. In Red Light Green Light, he seemed too happy to be playing the game. It did throw me when he got sick, and when he wet the bed, and of course “dying”. But that was a great twist.

I recently lived through watching my dad slowly die of a brain tumour, he passed on almost 2 years ago now, and it was very common for him to have "inappropriate" responses to things, having extremely intense mood swings (going from extreme anger or happiness to extreme depression/despair), and it didn't happen often but he did sometimes get stuck in memories or get stuck in a conversational loop of some kind. Both the character and the actor sold it very well, and I was totally fooled right until the end.

When Il-Nam got shot we don't hear his body falling to the ground. The series is consistent with its sound effects since when every time someone got shot there is always the sound of the body falling but not in this case since Il-Nam is not killed.

When 456 picked 001 as his partner, I believe 001 was actually surprised and extremely moved that anyone would choose him to play an unknown game where having a weak partner could potentially get you killed. Based on the fact that he doesn't have any family or friends on his deathbed, it's possible his own family and children are eagerly waiting for him to die ASAP so they can inherit his fortune (or he might not have any family). He didn't want to kill the only person who's shown him true and pure compassion for a very long time so let 456 win the marble game.

I think he actually took that opportunity to break 456 down and feel justified in everything. He seemed somewhat happy when he mentioned being “tricked” by his friend. Seeing how he made the bet about the person on the street at the end, I could see how 001 wanted 456 to come back to the game and find a way to break 456. Proving to himself that people are inherently bad. Just my take from it.

I doubt it. Sure, its a risk for a physical game but he also proved himself strategic enough to make up for that in the tug of war. In every previous game he came out one of the front runners. Perhaps he wouldn't be the first person I pick but he'd definitely be up there in the top 2 or 3.

Good observation! I started suspecting him in the bunker fight scene when he ended up in a high spot whereas others were at ground level, fighting. Also the fact that guards were sent in as soon as he requested the fight to stop.

Some of the things I noted was that everyone participating in the games was in major debt. Oh Il-nam’s reason for being there was different from the rest and also peculiar… Also everyone had encountered someone on the streets and played a game of ddakji. If I saw an old man getting slapped I would immediately intervene. On another note, the beginning part where Gi-hun gets a present for his daughter is also symbolic. The box resembles the caskets they use, the gun being what kills most of them, and the lighter being the fire that incinerates their caskets.

Did anyone notice that at the beginning when he signs away his physical rights, they say if he doesn’t pay that he will lose a kidney and an eye. Later in the show when it shows the redcoats harvesting organs of some of the players, they specifically are taking one kidney and one eye out of each person.

The best theory i have heard about the show is that at the beggining, the train guy gives you the choice between blue and red. If you choose blue- youll become a player. If you choose red- youll be recruited as a soldier. Really makes you think which fate is worse.

Very few guard/worker were killed. 455 players were killed out of 456. So yeah, being a guard is better. But of course the guards don't get a chance to become super rich, they just a regular paycheck.

I’ve heard that theory and it’s fun but I don’t think it makes sense - the guards all seem like highly regimented soldier-type recruits from the start. They don’t seem like the desperate rag tag bunch that make up the contestants. Also there don’t appear to be any female guards or old guards - all seem like young athletic men.

@@Sam-bd7gp their were a few female guards, you could see outlines of their breasts and larger thighs I’m pretty sure. The explanation for some of the guards is that most of them were groomed as the guard that was unmasked was young and had ‘fish eyes’ like what he was doing wasn’t fucked up. So similar to what the other guy said, probably slaves, child soldiers and or groomed individuals. You can also see that anyone was a victim to the vips if they were nearby including one of the waiters.

Personally I feel like Il Nam was still putting his life at risk - especially since he was to die soon. Even with all the protection and gimmicks which give him a slight advantage, there was no guarantee that he wouldn't die by accident or be sabotaged by the other players. We see this a lot in media and perhaps sometimes in real life too- people who have cancer or some disease which reduces their estimated lifespan always want to go out with a bang without lying down and taking it. Considering Il Nam's personality, I would say this element of risk and thrill was what made him want to participate. He had been watching the games his whole life and for one last time, wanted to know how it felt to be on the other side of the screen, being chased by death.
