Spoilers for the late page of the book She does not answer me for a long time, only sits, eyes shining with the last of the dying light. “I have done it,” she says. At first I do not understand. But then I see the tomb, and the marks she has made on the stone. A C H I L L E S, it reads. And beside it, P A T R O C L U S. “Go,” she says. “He waits for you.”

There was a real Achilles and Patroclus in history and, incidentally, they too were Greek. Most of us know Alexander the Great as the conqueror of much of the Ancient World. From Egypt in the West to India in the East, he consolidated most of the-then known world into a single empire whose scale and greatness rivaled that of Rome. His closest companion was a man named Hephaestion. The two were close in age and were virtually inseparable. In fact, they had grown up together and, as one court official later recalled, "knew each other's secrets." Hephaestion was also a skilled general and often fought alongside the king himself. So it was no surprise, then, that he'd be joining Alexander in a series of skirmishes against the Persians to vanquish them and, ultimately, absorb their lands into the empire. While in Persia (particularly the city of Ecbatana in the North of what's now Iran), Hephaestion fell ill during a particularly lively season of Greek festivals and games. To this day, no one knows for certain how and why he became sick, but some believe it to have been typhoid. Regardless, he died sometime in October of 324 BC. He was just 32 years old. According to both Plutarch and later Persian sources (especially Abolqasem Ferdowsi's 'Shahnameh,' or Book of Kings), Alexander's grief was "uncontrollable" and that "he neither tasted food nor paid any attention to his personal appearance," but instead spent all his time weeping or else keeping silent vigil over his beloved friend's lifeless body. Hephaestion was cremated and his ashes were scattered from atop the walled city of Babylon in present-day Iraq. He was given divine honors, a rite otherwise reserved solely for royalty, and was even bestowed with divine status by the Oracle at Siwa in Egypt. Alexander would himself pass away just eight months later (likely as a result of poisoning) and, even at that time, was still planning several lasting monuments to his fallen friend. Anyway, I'm rambling. All that aside, thank you for this gorgeous playlist. I don't know if the Greek mythology and/or 'Somewhere in Northern Italy' aesthetic is a thing but, if it is, then this is a shining example of it. I appreciate the time, thought and dedication you clearly put into this. You've just gained a new subscriber. IG: @thewaywardpoet

This story is soo alike to that of the Epic of Gilgamesh. Could it be that the fictional Epic of Gilgamesh was also inspired by the actual real friendship of Alexander the Great and his friend Hephaestion? If I recall correctly it was the first Epic to ever exist. I'm not though which one came first, so sorry about that 😓

Extract from Song of Achilles: “Name one hero who was happy." I considered. Heracles went mad and killed his family; Theseus lost his bride and father; Jason's children and new wife were murdered by his old; Bellerophon killed the Chimera but was crippled by the fall from Pegasus' back. "You can't." He was sitting up now, leaning forward. "I can't." "I know. They never let you be famous AND happy." He lifted an eyebrow. "I'll tell you a secret." "Tell me." I loved it when he was like this. "I'm going to be the first." He took my palm and held it to his. "Swear it." "Why me?" "Because you're the reason. Swear it." "I swear it."

Reading the song of achilles as a gay man is an entirely different experience, where seeing love between two men is written simply like they’re just.. people. Well, as much as they could be, Achilles and Patroclus. It’s a fantastic read, devastatingly beautiful, it touched my soul. I hope to find someone who could see me like Patroclus sees Achilles, and love someone as strong as Achilles loves Patroclus. My other half, my other soul. Someday.

As someone who went into the book knowing it would end in tragedy, I actually stopped reading it during their time with Chiron living on the mountain. Not because I was bored, but because I simply couldn’t bear to rip them out of this Heaven they had made together. To continue reading would be to doom them to this looming tragedy I had heard about. It took me months to finally read the rest, and when I did I stayed up all night finishing it. It destroyed me in the best way.

*“You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope.* Tell me not that I am too late, that such precious feelings are gone for ever. I offer myself to you again with a heart even more your own than when you almost broke it, eight years and a half ago. Dare not say that man forgets sooner than woman, that his love has an earlier death. I have loved none but you. Unjust I may have been, weak and resentful I have been, but never inconstant. You alone have brought me to Bath. For you alone, I think and plan. Have you not seen this? Can you fail to have understood my wishes? I had not waited even these ten days, could I have read your feelings, as I think you must have penetrated mine. I can hardly write. I am every instant hearing something which overpowers me. You sink your voice, but I can distinguish the tones of that voice when they would be lost on others. Too good, too excellent creature! You do us justice, indeed. You do believe that there is true attachment and constancy among men. Believe it to be most fervent, most undeviating, in F. W. I must go, uncertain of my fate; but I shall return hither, or follow your party, as soon as possible. A word, a look, will be enough to decide whether I enter your father’s house this evening or never”

“In the darkness, two shadows, reaching through the hopeless, heavy dusk. Their hands meet, and light spills in a flood like a hundred golden urns pouring out of the sun.” This line gave me closure to an extent because I pictured them holding hands and smiling together and then walking into a beautiful garden where they started their afterlife together. I picture that they had a beautiful time, free of war and strife, free of all the things that tore them apart in life.

They say a man goes the many stages in his life… The shepard being youthful and innocent The lover finding beauty in nature and people and the yearning to create beauty The knight forging your realm and fighting for stability The king reigning over the kingdom you’ve created The sage sharing life’s wisdom and watching your seeds bear fruit But the secret is the lover stage never leaves a man, even in old age the fragrance of youthful love and beauty still sparkles in the faded eyes of many sages.

I recently finished reading The Song of Achilles, and really loved it! Also this playlist is giving me Call Me By Your Name vibes, which kinda works with the whole classical art thing. Ugh this is all giving me a feeling that is just too beautiful and painful at the same time.

Love is the greatest curse there is. Especially if you forget whom and why you love, but you feel that aching deep inside your heart and the emptiness it brings. You mourn but for who? And yet you look but can't see. You become impatient that you forget love is there, but it passed you by, because you got so caught up in looking you forgot to see, and that's when you realize how foolish you had been.

excited to hear someone feel so passionate about video game art. Ive always loved video games and wanted to make one someday. i only now realized it was the art I loved the most. seeing how much detail someone put into the clothes the characters wore, the colors, seeing the places NPCs lived all of it.

it's currently 3am, I read this book in two days whilst putting on this playlist during the more emotional/nostalgic sections and marking every partciulay ghastly or sweet tuned page with a variety of colourful insults or loving comments, hehe, for future reference. I sometimes have a hard time letting my emotions out so I'm thankful for the melodies you put together which allowd me to enjoy this book in all its tragic beauty. This playlist was both humanising and comforting for me. You did a great job, especially with the order in which the songs came. Thank you

I just finished 'Song of Achilles' yesterday. Upon completing it, I just sat there for a good five, ten minutes, letting the feelings wash over me. It was such a beautiful, tragic, incredible story and one of the few books that really stayed with me. Naturally, afterward, I turned to KZbin to see what others thought of it, only to find that it's inspired a series of aesthetic playlists. I've listened to a number of them since yesterday afternoon, but yours is easily the best and my personal favorite. As the Greeks would say, "efharisto" (thank you) for this gorgeous compilation. It brings the story and characters back to me and makes me feel all over again.

His Moon There she was, his beloved leaning against the side of his knees. Today too she was wearing her signature lopsided bun with her favorite wooden hairpin while she sketched on. It was a simple hairpin with the entire moon cycle carved on it. Christopher fought the urge to run his fingers through Valentina’s hair and feel for the moon cycle on his fingertips fearing he’d take away her concentration as she had an exam coming up. He was grateful that she was spending time with him, letting him look at her beautiful self while she worked. They were out in the fields outside their college, him leaning against a tree. There were lots of people around, all students like them ranging from lovers to friends to solo wanderers but when he was with Valentina everything else seemed to disappear like none of it mattered. Her back view that was facing him was quite the sight indeed. Her pastel blue off shoulder top really complimented her. Her exposed neck with the mole at the bottom seemed to call towards him. A few strands of her hair had come lose. He was trying to fight off the urge to tuck them all in. she looked ethereal. Studying her features for the umpteenth time he had the sudden thought of wanting to take her and hide her away, protect her from anything and everything that could prove to be a threat to her wellbeing. And then he mentally chided himself for even having such thoughts. She had given him her heart and he had to make sure to treat her as his equal. With that he reached for hairpin and opened her luscious dark hair in one go. Raising her hand to touch her hair she turned around. He was greeted by a face that totally fit her name. She had high cheekbones with a well-defined jawline, a nose just the right bit of pointy and clear eyes always lined with kohl that reached deep into your soul with just the perfect arched brows. Oh and she had beautiful lips. Christopher wished he knew the name of the type of lips she had but he could never remember it. Maybe he should be taking a few classes on art. They looked really pretty when she wore her favorite shade of brown lipstick that went well with almost all her dresses. Framed by her dark hair that very those eyes were looking right past and above him at his hands. She grabbed for her hairpin quietly and he leant back straightening his knees in the process causing her to lose her balance with her head landing on his legs. He watched her unsure of what to do. But then those very lips curved into the most beautiful smile. Christopher felt himself go weak, butterflies taking flight in his stomach. He must protect her, he reminds himself. “If you wanted my attention, you should’ve said so from the start” she says laughing. -You have an exam in two days. “Nothing I can’t cover up when we aren’t together. Must’ve been boring for you with nothing but music to listen to” -I did bring my books but- “You got busy staring at me?’ Valentina piped up. Christopher said nothing as if he got caught doing something he shouldn’t be doing. “I’m going to stay like this for a while to you can stare to your fill” she bemused. Christopher must change the topic- The hairpin, it’s wooden. Isn’t it heavy? “It’s perfect for holding my hair in place given my hair length and I thought you liked it” as if she’d caught on and was letting him change the topic. Christopher nodded running his fingers over the carvings. -Suits you, you know? “Hmm?” -Moons and you, it seems perfect. She beamed at him. His eyes landed on something on her lap, her notebook now closed. He reached for it quietly. When his hand closed around it he looked down at her for permission. After she nodded almost hesitantly he opened it. His own face stared back at him with a slight more shading at the ears and a shadow in the eyes. He was looking at the artist shyly. -You were drawing me with your face turned away? He felt something warm bloom inside him. “We have been asked to practice drawing things from memory” she looked away. Valentina never turned pink but watching her closely he could tell when she was feeling shy and right now she was always a rare sight. He opened his mouth to speak and realized he had forgotten how to. After recovering he said- Will you let me do your hair? She looked at him, eyes blown wide. The smile had returned. ‘She was the moon’ he thought to himself. She was his moon. By his side all the time and shining upon him upon night time. twitter n IG: @julyswillow
