I read "Through Gates of Splendor" at 12y. --10 years after they were killed in Ecuador. As a Missionary kid in Formosa, it deeply touch my heart and soul. Then I saw the 30min B&W movie by the same name. It further imbedded it in my heart. Dad and Mom were missionaries to Formosa/Taiwan. They were still preparing to go to Formosa when this happened When Dad died 6 years ago, In his Bible, I found Jim Elliots' quote. "He is no fool if he would give what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose." Eric Liddill went to mainland China as a missionary. He died there in a Japanese internment camp during WWII.

There once was a man born of high circumstance Heir to advantage, He had every chance to succeed But light from the cross made his dreams appear small And to their surprise he went far--from it all For the love of his Savior, for one priceless jewel They could not understand so they called him a fool Chorus He is no fool If he would choose To give the thing he cannot keep To buy what he can never lose To see a treasure in one soul That far outshines the brightest gold He is no fool, He is no fool He is no fool, He is no fool There once was a boy who could run like the wind Given to lead, every man was his friend at the line But light from the cross made his race appear small And to their amazement, he followed the call For the love of his Savior, for one priceless jewel They could not understand so they called him a fool Show me the fool who abandons his life To walk in the steps of our Lord Jesus Christ

This music video sung by Twila Paris captures the challenge and opportunity before us. We all have needs and Father God will meet them. But we are born and born again not just to eat, live, die and go to Heaven, but to fulfill Father God's high calling in Messiah Jesus-to receive His love and give it to each person we meet. This song highlights the lives of Jim Elliot and Scottish runner Eric Liddell. I would only add as I was reminded tonight that God is not only after individual souls as important as they are but in these end times is calling us to disciple (not just win converts but to disciple) not just individuals but entire nations per Matthew 28 and Psalm 2 for example. The nations are the inheritance of the Father to Jesus. Psalm 2. This is a new paradigm to more traditional views but it is starting to happen.Shalom and blessings

I'm weeping. So convicted. Just like Jesus did, Jim laid down his life, for them.

Amazing that these men gave their lives to show God's love to these people and how many have now come to into a personal relationship with Jesus.

I forgot 5 missionaries were murdered and all young beautiful men, some w/ young children. How BRAVE and what love for JESUS knowing tribe was violent to outsiders. But surely their deaths not in vain. Many tribesmen eventually saved after brave Eliz Elliot & sister of Nate Saint went back 2Ecuador. I heard Mincaye speak (interpreter) when he was in USA. Could u add lyrics 2 description? Jim Elliot, Nate Saint, Ed McCully, Peter Fleming, Roger Youderian modern day martyrs for JESUS CHRIST.

The book Through Gates Of Splendor is a wonderful book. This tells more in debt about the mission of the Elliot family and thoae who died for the call of Christ in their lives.

@axlcrush God bless you, friend. I can relate. Thank God that we are covered by the sinless blood of Jesus, and don't have to rely on our own efforts! Perhaps He will give us the strength and will to stand the test when we are called on to do so. We'll never be able to earn His love (it's given freely, after all), but we might just manage to make Him proud of us one day!

I admire the men John Elliott and Eric Lindel, but don't have one tenth of their courage faith and insight of life. I am distracted by what is seen, and easily slip into living for the temporal. What a fool I am. I say this with sincerity lest anyone think it to be sarcasm.

I'm sorry but I have to disagree with you. They actually did have rifles but choose not to use them. I agree we should be able to defend ourselves with firearms. But case where people go to share the gospel that negate the message. Imagine if they had killed those tribes men. They probably would never have accepted Jesus as their Savior, the story would not have caused thousands to go into the ministry as it did. The answer to evil is people willing to share the gospel and be martyred.

One of the attackers was shot (kind of unintentionally) but he did not die as a result of it.

Having known the leaders who were working to contact the Auca's before the 5 families' arrival & also, having known Jim, Pete & Nate's best friend. Later I got to know Elisabeth Elliott. I can assure you that the five men were only armed with one revolver!

At the end, The Missionary's were praying for 2 M4's and a few 30 rnd clips

I knew Jim Elliott's widow. The men were armed (to fire a warning in the air or send animals running, I don't know). But, because the Auca's souls were of more importance than their own souls (which were already, ready for heaven)! Therefore, although they were armed they chose not to fire.....As a family member of an S.A.S. "operative", someone who was blown sky-high by a bomb aged four & have served in places were bombs, bullets & bricks flew, I wonder.. Would YOU have been as brave (without arms, attempting to share the gospel with "Aucas" who were so afraid of even their close family members that they were almost tried to sleep with "..one eye open"? Their last thoughts before death were, most likely, their young families but, I assure you, their next thought was pure JOY that they were home, in heaven, at last!!
