Grateful thanks for recognising other people's struggles in life including the wildlife. Without a doubt Private Pete absolutely did the right choice for his time I hopefully lots off it left. All natural tidal ways and estuary waters used to be absolutely free to anchor and stay in Britain, but thee establishment, in this case the crown 👑 decided we can make yet more money than ever changing and charging extortionate fees in every marina that they have an interest in. Otherwise as they mostly dictate the crown owns all land and waters around our British isles no-one else can do anything, yet they say it's a "Free" country. Good luck to Pete and everyone else in this situation.❤ from Scotland

A friend and I tried to start a group a while back to support the rights of the anchor outs to be there. What we found was that a number of them had not one, but multiple boats, all in varying levels of disrepair. It’s fairly common for boats to sink out there from time to time. Some of those anchor outs who have multiple boats try to lease out their extra boats to others, many of whom have no experience on a boat. I once towed a family trying to row back to their boat because they weren’t making headway against the outgoing current; when I tossed them a line, none of them knew how to tie any kind of knot… at all. There have also been a number of animal deaths out there in addition to human deaths. One instance was when a person left their boat, leaving their dog aboard. The boat sank and the dog presumably drown to death. Another instance was when authorities were trying to enter a boat. They used smoke bombs of some kind that lit the interior of the boat on fire, and it killed the persons dog I think from smoke inhalation. There are also numerous instances of people dying while trying to get to or off of their boat during storms as well. There’s always a few boats that let go during storms and drift ashore, I think sometimes with people onboard, which is also a dangerous situation to be in. It would be really wonderful to support a thriving and responsible maritime community in that part of the bay, but that’s not what’s actually going on out there. Some are responsible and knowledgeable mariners, but I would estimate the majority are not. It should be maintained as an anchorage for visiting vessels, and if there are individuals who want to live aboard, there should be city-maintained moorings and certain operational standards that the boat needs to meet (like being able to run under it’s own power or sails at least once a year out the Golden Gate and back). The moorings should cost a certain amount each month, which should go towards maintaining the moorings and employing a harbor master to oversee the mooring field as well as visiting vessels. Newport Beach and some other similar locations actually have fairly decent rules around the same exact subject. It’s a solvable issue, and there is a middle ground, but the state of things as they are isn’t something I’m personally sympathetic to any more. It needs to be better, and some of that responsibility falls on the shoulders of the people living out there to be responsible and knowledgeable mariners if they aren’t already. In the absence of the anchor outs taking responsibility as a group, the city also isn’t showing up to the table to negotiate in any real way, which means that the solution is simply evicting those who live there. I’m not sure where it’ll go from here, but hopefully it ends up with folks like Peter being as happy as he is to have some creature comforts after a long time on the water.

@@shaneriehl223 I wouldn't make them go out the Golden gate as the potato patch(the other side of the bridge is are dangerous waters ment for passing through only. In fact my sailing club bay area association of disabled sailors has a rule of not going outside the Golden gate unless we are on the way out or back in as it is dangerous. I was a skipper for BAADS for 5 years and am familiar with those waters. I'd say just sail or motor out the Richardson bay into sf bay or San Pablo bay and back, or circumnavigate the navigable waters of Richardson bay. In Princeton harbor all ya gotta do is sail outside the jaws and back to your mouring or birth to prove the boat. Of course I'd rather sail the potato patch than out and back in the jaws at Princeton as it's the most dangerous port on the west coast and always has been.

Back in the 70s in Moss Landing, CA. Ferro Cement boats were popular projects. Folks would get the plans and materials and build the hull and give up. At one time these abandoned hulls were in the fields and vacant lots. It seems people just for some reason gave up and never even put in the water. There is only one of these left at Moss Landing in a field.

Back in the 70's steel and cement was cheap and building a ferro hull is a relatively low skilled job. Many people thought that building the hull was the most expensive and difficult part of getting afloat but the cabin fit out, rigging, sails, mechanics, plumbing etc is actually the majority of the cost and time, it also requires a jack-of-all-trades skill set. Many ferro builders didn't understand that until they finished the hull. Reality set in and the project stalled forever.

I'm from Mill Valley and grew up on the water in Sausalito and Richardson Bay. I am wondering what the origin of his boat hull is....My family built a ferro cement hull that looked similer in the over in Tam Junction in the early 70s but sadly the project was interrupted by my parents divorce.....always wondered what happened to that hull......it had airtight submarine doors separating the bulk heads. Thanks 🌎😎

I mean this example is of a derelict biohazard boat that SHOULD be condemned. But if you think people are going to fight back......how many gov officials were gone after "in a bad way" after the covid lockdowns funneled all consumers into a select group of businesses while shutting everyone else down? I expected people who lost everything to start stacking bodies but nobody did a gd thing.

@@joey-ne6pl Well, that boat with the working TV, stove and sink is in the "safe and Seaworthy" program... which means (as you probably guessed) that it is safe and seaworthy - deemed so by the RBRA. There are many boats that are seaworthy - as I pointed out in the comment above, I was sailing on one - clearly seaworthy. Are there derelict boats? Yes - Peter's is one that definitely qualifies as marine debris, but that is not representative of all the boats on the bay. It's dishonest to pretend that it is. If one house on a street is condemned would we destroy the whole neighborhood, and say they all must be that way?

It is extremely annoying for legitimate seafarers to find there is no space in a protected anchorage. Safe anchorages are few and far between and should not be exclusively usurped by anyone - least of all by people who don't even maintain their vessels in seaworthy condition. I'm not against people living afloat - I've done so myself - but they've no entitlement to hog the best spots and should at least be made to move occasionally.

To understand why these people are being removed from the water all you need do is look across the bay from Sausalito. The billionaires with their 50 million dollar properties do not want to look out on the bay and see people living their lives their way in complete freedom. It is those wealthy people on their wealthy island, yes it has a land bridge but is technically an island called Belvedere. The ironic thing about Belvedere island is that in the early 20th century before the Golden Gate Bridge was built Tiburon served as the south terminus of the railroad that served the North Bay Area. Belvedere did not have its land bridge yet and was known as a dirty place that Hobo’s and the homeless outcasts lived on. Now one hundred years later it is where the one percenters live that don’t want to look out their windows and see what they would probably describe as Sea Hobo’s. They are just people living their lives in freedom the way they want, pretty sure that was part of the principles this country was founded on.

If they ever want to give you anything, it means you have a position of strength. Imo they should all run from a deal like that. In the long run it’s a huge loser. Do not comply with them and fight. It’s the only way. The fact that they want to give these people something says it all to me. These people don’t give you anything unless they are extremely vulnerable. Maybe they have an extremely important deadline or something. You never know. 100% it’s bad deal to take I guaruntee

I lived out on Richardson Bay, on the hook for a couple years in the 20teens years, right in front of Modern Sailing and their docks. Loved the community and the life. Went to Sausalito City Council meetings to lend my voice against rich home owners on the hill who would generally testify that, "I pay HUGE property taxes! Why should these people live out there for free...pissing and shitting in the water?" I always rowed my waste to shore. Never dumped it in my back yard. I also testified to the City Council and showed them pictorial proof that live aboard's have been living on the hook for 150 years on that bay, and that these shithead homeowners were trying to destroy a century and a half of CULTURE going all the way back to the gold rush days! The Sheriff came by a few times to talk with me and my wife (our boat was clean and sea worthy), and they pretty much left us alone, but I remember when they started pulling boats and crushing them. Pure cruelty. They didn't care that these boats had people's whole life possessions in them. Still ticks me off. Looks like the rich are winning again. If your domicile is not hooked up to some sort of meter...the local government shows thinly veiled hate towards you. I loved the freedom...but freedom pisses off the powers that be. I definitely remember Peter and his boat. He's a good guy.

All of this upheaval and madness is due to one thing and one thing only. The uncontrolled desire for profit. "Houseboats" i.e. multi-level barges, packed in side by side now sell for millions, and the dock spaces are just as expensive. This entire situation had a solution decades ago when the community sought to become a township as this entire area of Marin City and Waldo Point are on unincorporated property. This would have allowed for citizen control instead of private-owner domination. However, when that attempt was put forth it was quickly met with brutal violent attacks and even murder. Now, all these years later, Marin is still at war with the impoverished and minorities who attempt to gain any sense of empowerment or community. It is the most shameful chapter in Marin history and the well-paid and elegantly housed officials in charge just keep writing it.// Lawrence White
