Yes and no. The guy couldn’t afford much, and they are clearly a high end store. So taking time with one customer who might buy a $30 tie, takes away from the customer that would buy a $300 tie. Is it nice? No. Does it make sense? Yes. Now if they had more workers than customers 🤷🏻‍♂️

My Dad sold cars 20 something years. Master Salesman every month for like 15 of those years straight out of some 50 people. He had the same philosophy. Treated everybody the same. One time a guy came into the lot dressed in ragged and oil stained clothes. Nobody wanted to help him except for my Dad. The guy bought a Cadillac with all the add-ons for around 100 grand, with a duffle bag full of cash. Guy was a CEO of some local construction biz, his car broke down, he got it running on the side of the road just enough to limp it within a few blocks of the dealership.

When I was getting married, the tie I needed to match my wife's dress accents, had been sold out at men's warehouse, the employee has just bought the last one earlier that day. I was told by staff to come back later that day and they would see what they could do. Well apparently the guy brought it back into the store and left it for me. I never got his name, but that guy made me so freaking happy. I'll never forget his kindness. Edit: wow. Such an insane amount of likes thank you all.

I worked at Dillard's in the men's clothing section. A man came in, dirty and smelled of a hard day's labor in the sun. I had smelled many men that had worked hard, my dad, brothers, family friends that worked in the field. The other young lady retailers were trying to get someone else to wait on him. I volunteered without being asked. He was color blind and needed an entire outfit for his daughter's wedding. He was my favorite customer. He wanted me to pick out his outfit for him down to his socks. It was the highlight of working there. I got to chose everything. I was used to ignoring the hard work smell and focus on enjoying the person. ❤😊

One time I went to a suit shop to look for a grey tie. I didn’t realize it was a high end store and when the sales person brought out a tray of grey ties I looked at the price tags, and I said, I’m sorry, but I can’t afford any of these ties (they were cashmere, $150 ties). The sales person looked at me and said, “you can have this one, it’s from the last season anyway”. I said “no it’s okay, are you sure?” He turned to me and said: “I’m just glad to see a young guy like you who wants to wear a tie”. Later that day I went back to the store to bring him a coffee and a cake from a local bakery. I still have that tie, and it’s one of my favorites. It is the reason I later got a grey suit, to match my free, $150 cashmere tie.

See its smart in the business sense because the profit on the suit (if u did it at the same place) is probably more than they have even subtracting the full cost+lost profit on the tie. Turns out the best business strategy, as I see it is “treat your customers right even if it eats into your immediate profits because surprise, people that like you will give you money for your services”

I used to do sales on the field and I used to scout small and medium sized factory shops. Suddenly, one day in Tardeo Industrial Estate, I entered a nice factory making ties and got into a conversation with an old man and his wife behind a desk. Just got talking about things and forgot everything about the pitch. I had such a good time and was about to leave sensing the couple were a bit worn out by my energy. I said my byes to them and suddenly the old man asks for One rupee which those days was about 28 to the dollar. I, slid the rupee across to the old man with deep respect, without a word and he stared at me with those moist grey eyes, that old men have. He looked across at his wife and they spoke to each other without words and without any expressions. I felt a love and joy for them, so deep that even now it overwhelms me. They slid across a golden flat paper box with a plastic window on it. I can still remember the tie inside. Deep blue and red. The colour of Presidents and power, in a fabric so soft and fluffy. I didn't have the heart or grace left to refuse a loving gift. I could only choke out a slurred thank you so much... The couple was deeply gratified that I instantly fell in love with the tie and a small tie-pin. Everything after that is a blur, I left for the day, reached home and my eyes kept overflowing with tears all through the day. Ungrateful and privileged teen that I was, I never went back till I forgot this incident... And this video jolted that memory back to life. 32 years ago. I deeply thank you for your kind share, it helps me relive the same memory of the old man and his wife and their amazing gift of love and kindness to me.🎉❤😊

I walked into a jewellery store about a decade ago, to look at watches. Couldn't afford the one I was interested in, but the salesperson didn't know that. She still took the time to tell me about the brand, the features etc. I thanked her and left. Now just a couple of years ago I went back to the same jeweller and bought a watch. Not the same I'd seen ten years earlier, but still a nice watch that I couldn't have afforded back then. I related to the manager why I had returned to this store to make my eventual purchase. He was moved, and asked me to repeat the story to his other employees, which I happily did. It was my way of saying thank you to them for their kindness, years earlier.

Every person deserves a basic amount of respect. Respect can be gained or lost based on future actions. Employees should be kind and friendly even to difficult customers but your employees also should not have to put up with bs. They don’t get paid near enough to be shouted at or belittled. I had a bespoke suit store close to savile row during my twenties. As an American, I tried competing with savile row in their own backyard. One day I had a whole bunch of people at my store looking to buy a suit. I was super excited, hardly anyone came into my boutique. Then comes in a very dirty man with work boots and orange shirt. My other customers looked at him and even one woman told her husband, "see, these are the type of people that come here, savile row is down the street". All of them left. I was saddened, but still treated the man with respect. He told me, "don't worry about those pretentious blokes mate, I'm all you need". Turns out the guy was a rich international architect that loved doing construction work not just sitting in an office. He bought ten suits from the finest wool, silk, cashmere, etc. I made with him what I would of made with all those people buying a suit. He is a regular. Every 6 months he buys 10 suits

Worked at a Jeep dealership years ago. We had a winter storm one afternoon and overnight. Snow, sleet, ice everywhere. Just nasty weather. I went in early the next morning. Half the salespeople didn't even show up. About 10:30 a guy comes walking up the street wearing some ratty, old hunting gear. He walks in the showroom and looks at a new Wrangler. I figured he just wanted to warm up, and that's OK. Twenty minutes later, he's writing a check for the most loaded out Wrangler on the lot. Apparently, his regular car couldn't get out of the drive. It actually slid into his sons car. He needed to get to work. He had a surgery scheduled to preform that afternoon. The Jeep did great in the snow and ice. He showed up a few days later. This time, I sold him a shiny new Dodge Ram for his son's graduation. NEVER judge a book by its cover.

One summer, working at a 7-Eleven a lady came in almost out of gas. She didn’t have any cash, but had her checkbook. Now, I had been told absolutely not to take any out-of-town checks….. she didn’t know what to do, but I said “let’s just think about this for a minute….”. finally, it dawned on me. “I can’t have my manager finding out of town checks in the drawer, but I can loan you five dollars myself!” later in the week, I received a letter in the mail with a five dollar bill inside!

Explaining diet and exercise and stuff. To be fair, I was supposed to be selling personal training sessions, and I did. When I was a mechanic the service writers would size customers up as they walked through the door and place bets on how much $$ they could get out of each customer before they even knew what was wrong with the car. Also, I inquired about an ad for a service writer at the local BMW dealership and was told that if the customer upsale ticket average fell below $800 per customer per visit - you're fired. Most of these were new cars that were still under warranty. In other words if you didn't find an average of $800 of non-warranty work that needed to be done (tires, brakes, wipers, turn signal fluid) you're fired.

I am currently working as a skiman in a resort on the french alps. There's nothing more painfull than to see sadness and embarrassment in parent's eyes when their children asks for something they can't afford. Ski is expensive and sometimes just a simple beanie or even socks are the little thing that is too much for their wallet. After 10 years in the same shop I have my boss trust, I don't steal, I don't offer, i just put it on my bill. You won't believe the amount of things I owe to the shop, but my boss never asked me to pay. He knows I still have my old beanie on my head while some kids have the ones they wanted. Suddenly the pain in the eyes of the parents turn into pure love, I sleep well after work, I am a happy man.

We send it to them ( to the factory) and they asked 1500€ to fix the strap that was broken... She didn't had the money so she asked the watch back knowing she would not be able to wear it again... So when I saw that lady I asked her to wait and it took me 1 hour to fix it. I gave her back her watch and said, here is your mom's watch.. She asked me how much she had to pay and I said, nothing mam.. My boss is paying me anyway, this hour spend, Is soo much more for you! I took a table of an elderly couple that kinda looked down on their luck. The other waitstaff didn't want them thinking they would get stiffed on the tip. The job only paid .94 cents an hour (back in the 80s in florida) but since it was a breakfast place and if you were good and quick you could rake in about $100 to $150 if not more in tips every 5am to 1 pm shift. Not only did this couple buy what ever they wanted they tipped like 35% they just looked rough as they were cleaning and painting their new condo they just bought. On the ocean with beautiful views. They came in every day almost for breakfast and asked for me or the other young lady I was friends with. The older woman whispered to me that she'd heard the snooty bitchy other waiter and waitress and that I was a good girl. They tipped huge every time they came in. When I decided to return to Michigan they were so sweet and told me they would miss me very much and left me $100 bill as a goodbye gift and for extra gas on the way home. I did let them know my mom was flying down to help me drive home and we had the gas covered. She just insisted that I use it for something fun and to remember them. My mother and I stopped at mammoth caves in way home with it. As we ended up staying an extra day on the road. But I always tried to treat people like I wanted to be treated. Sometimes it works in your favor. Sometimes, I was an admitted doormat.

I remembered telling her thanks but she didn't have to always bring anything. She advised me that when someone tries to do something kind to another person its important not to take away their joy. You easily can. What you need to do is to do it consistently and use the opportunities. My grandfather was asked by a few local restaurants to raise prices as the rest of the industry was suffering and he was the lowest price by far. He did so because he knew they had a higher overhead. However, he didn't pocket the difference. He would save any amount paid by his regulars to an envelope for them. A few days before Christmas he would give them the envelope. I know of at least 20 people who all said they literally always looked forward to Christmas as their parents were somehow able to make a miracle happen of this big meal and time together. One of those people broke down when I told him the story as he realized his parents were one of those frequent customers. He literally told me that it is what made him strive to be a better father as he wanted to be able to do what his parent's did only for more people and without the monetary lows. This being said, he surrounded himself with some of the best people as a result. Local linemen would literally prioritize his business and his road. The local judge was a frequent customer. Lawyers loved the place. In fact, because he also served alcohol and full meals (which was uncommon at the time), people would bring their whole families and the place was known for a family friendly atmosphere. As a result, many wives would literally let their husbands drink there without a care as they knew it wasn't going to get rowdy and my grandfather had a policy of cutting people off before they were truly drunk. Many local bars had a life span of 2-5 years. His was going on 30+ of all profitable years. In fact, his only advertising was a 8×11 sign that just said the name of the bar/tavern from the first day it was open.

That man is going to his 50th high school reunion. He clearly has a lot of friends and family that he'll inform of this great retailer that helped him out when he had problems which will attract more people that can and will look for an honest deal and a good person that has a heart for their customers. It's basic customer service and an act of good will that will benefit the company in the long run, especially since more and more people have the same mindset as the manager that won't give people the time of day unless they have fancy clothes and something shiny on their person. Why do you think wealthy people pretend to be poor on purpose?

Employee kindness goes a long way to making customers happy. At the last solar eclipse, some T-Mobile store were giving away sunglasses to see it. When I went to my local one at the Florida Mall, they were all out. But one of the employees told me to hold on, he went to the back, and gave me his pair. My daughter and I were able to watch the eclipse side by side because of that kind man. He made me a repeat customer at that store. I went back for the T-Mobile WiFi and we got our Apple Watches there. Always be kind to your customers.

Judging by how Internet stories go, the bed man was probably a powerful CEO or something like that, and gave the Ex employee of the store a job. To be fair, there’s something I have learned in life, people ridicule the rich when they ask what the price of something that would be cheap for them is. “ why would a millionaire ask what the price of the big Mac is?” and there is this saying, the fact you can afford something doesn’t mean it’s worth it

It was a long time ago when I learned about random acts of kindness. And I didn't really understand them because I was still a kid maybe 10 or 11. But once I started doing that everyday it takes just a few seconds to hold the door for somebody or tell somebody they look good or tell somebody that you appreciate them Even something a simple as being a sympathetic ear for a few moments it really makes a big difference. At least in my life it did I think it made me understand the human condition a little bit more. So I rambled on about all this just to say it only takes a few minutes to show somebody some kind of and you'll be a better person for it❤

I love doing that, too... I have "high functioning" Autism and was told I'd never be able to work retail because of it, so I've made a point of leading with kindness where possible and what makes my day is being able to help build people to weather or not they're going to purchase anything my favorite memory of tlmy job so far is when I had a sightly larger lady (transitioning from teen-young adult) and took the time to talk to her, figure out what she currently felt comfortable wearing and what style she admires and helped her pick out pieces that can be warn together and work in woth her current wardrobe. She went from being unsure and looking at the ground to having the biggest smile on her face, and nothing beats that 😊 I'm also blessed to have awesome managers who allow that kind of interaction and encourage it because they understand that honesty, kindness, and the ability to genuinely complement/critique customers on what garnments work/don't work for them and it shines through because people come back for that honesty... I'm not going to sell you on something that doesn't suit you unless you are absolutely adamant.

She told me I could use her discount and get 50% off. Was the nicest thing that had happened to me in a while. They were the best headphones i have had for a long long time. Still use them to this day. The noise canceling helps when I am in loud stores and busy places. Honestly it was like magic when I put them on. So grateful for the lady.
