TRAILER BACKING IS ESSENTIAL TO TRUCK DRIVERS AND OFTEN NOT USED ENOUGH. BUT HE MADE IT LOOK EASY.

Don't be afraid to whip that trailer around as hard as you want when backing...I found when backing with a spotter truck I just do 90's and found it easier...just don't be afraid to jack knife the trailer in front of the hole to make it square...it won't really hurt anything just put a little wear on the trailer tires.

I’ve only been a switcher for not even 2 months.. When he said it took him 3 months to get good at backing up I was so shocked. My first 2 days were frustrating but by the third day I had it down. By the end of my first week it looked like I’d been in the yard for months. My manager did say I’m learning a lot faster than all the previous switchers when they got trained, but I thought he was just hyping my head up. I’m at a small FedEx hub and we only had one other yard switcher so I had a lot of time to train throughout the day. It was probably easier for me bc they didn’t really train me, the other switcher just stood outside and watched as I figured it out to make sure I didn’t hit anything.

I remember when I became a spotter. It took me about 10 minutes to learn how to back up with semi-trailers. This was due to the fact that I used to play with toy trucks as a kid, and I inadvertently understood the concept of counter-steering and follow. The only thing that I had to get used to is that 28' trailers and 53' trailers back up way differently, with the shorter trailers being much harder to guide in reverse.
@antoinemarous7308 Жыл бұрын
@@gethighonlife11 same here. At my work a trucker let me hope in the truck and back up a trailer to a dock and I landed it perfectly on my first try ever driving a trailer. Than I backed up on my second try in between two trailers that were a lot tighter than the spots in this video

I'm with transportation at Amazon and I've been driving hostler for over a year now. It was definitely frustrating for me at first but now that I've done it awhile I'm way better at it!
@tomerickson78892 жыл бұрын
Shag driver at Amazon, and I had an easy time from day one. I'm a trainer now, and some people get it right away, and some people take a while. However, some that had a difficult time at first, are some of the best drivers now. Those are some tight DD's, but I like it when it's a tight fit either at a DD or PS...seems to make it easier for me. I am the fastest driver at our site...with the exception of one 3rd party driver...but then they don't do a full trailer inspection like Amazon Shag drivers do.

Its definitely a brain issue... I always figured that for some people it just clicks in your head one day and once your brain "sees" the actual physics of backing, it will solve every situation quickly and safely. with the same mental formula.

A week from now i start my first day. Had some experience 2 years ago driving one. Drove on and off for about 8 months. Even tho the guy who interviewed me and had me move and park a trailer said I should do just fine. I’m still nervous af. I won’t have a trainer (least I don’t think so) but he did mention if i needed help that there’s 3 other drivers on my shift who i can radio. So hopefully they’re understanding of me being rusty/nervous

U really cant talk about how well he backed that yard truck without also adding how the yard truck has a very short wheel base which ='s. a hellva short turning radius compared to a road tractor or even a day cab when it comes to any manuvering around in any direction...

at my job we repair and park our own trailers. our yard is soo tiny that with a 53 foot trailer a regular otr tractor will get stuck trying to whip it around. we also jump from roof to roof working on units so for safety we have to park each trailer as close as possible sometimes 4 to 5 inch gaps in between trailers.
@TruckingandLife3 жыл бұрын

@@TruckingandLife oh it is lol. I'm still far from pro, actually defiantly still looks like I half know what I'm doing. Most times I wont be able to get it into the hole in 1 shot, I end up jackknifing and will start going too far to the drivers side container. I feel better about hugging the drivers side container and staying far away from my blind side. But anyway, all I do is drive forward to straighten out and it's a basically a straight shot back with MINOR adjustments.
