Part of the reason I don't like seeing an engine evaluation in these videos is because it can often be misleading even when correct. Sometimes the engine will give a significant advantage for one color, but only because it sees some extremely complicated engine line that no human would ever find and, from a human perspective, the position is closer to equal.
@qazzaqstan
@qazzaqstan 2 жыл бұрын
That said I'm never sure when something is so gross the super GMs are unlikely to find it because as far as I'm concerned high level chess is already witchcraft and they calculate insanely long lines as long as they are "forcing".
@AFastidiousCuber
@AFastidiousCuber 2 жыл бұрын
@@qazzaqstan When two engines play, and the game is decisive, the evaluation will tend to very steadily improve for one color until the advantage is overwhelming. When humans play, even at a high level, the advantage will tend to bob back and forth. Pick almost any game covered on this channel, and the engine will find many missed opportunities from both players. Sometimes the strongest moves are just hard for humans to make sense of.
@qazzaqstan
@qazzaqstan 2 жыл бұрын
@@AFastidiousCuber that is very much the case, but at any given point it is hard to say whether or the the super GM will see the top or effectively top engine move until they either play it or don't. In fact it seems even commentators seem unsure a lot of the time. Complicated "equal" games are definitely an issue though. There an engine might say the weaker side is "fine" but any human will just have trouble holding in the long run because they just need to play much more accurately for much longer and eventually clock becomes a factor.
@johannchin6431
@johannchin6431 2 жыл бұрын
Engines are very good at defending. Humans not so much. Even super GMs crack under pressure, especially in shorter time controls. IMO it is more important to create practical and active play vs top engine line against human opponents.
@iturner1387
@iturner1387 2 жыл бұрын
Levy often says the engine is dumb or knows nothing and often times he's probably being sarcastic but my assumption here is that the moves that are evaluated as not-as-good might not be as good against another engine, but are probably very useful against humans, or for the human playing it. There's a certain level of intuition with chess moves that aren't simply calculations.

Personally, I don't mind either way, but I like it to be absent, since we'll have to think for ourselves about the position and I think the introduction of engines evaluation during a recap like this will reduce the fun a bit.

Agadmator, you could precompute all positions at high depth before recording. Just cache PGN->eval and use software to instantly retrieve it. You could get someone to develop it for your setup. Very useful for video creators. Chesscom uses it for their analyze feature at a low depth. Not sure it's important addition as the main content of your videos does not require it, just an extra feature for fun

Good presentation. I had Qxp on the 2sec pause as the definitive defensive move, also considered the Nd7+ attack but i didn't expect the Ka8 answer. I was calculating with Kc8 as the answer, and then sacrificing the knight for another check, to expose the white diagonal the King was on to then check with the Queen, but always the mate in one that black had, remained, so i would have to take the black h pawn and then what? I had lost a knight. So i would have played Qxp which was the right answer but expect it to be wrong. Usually when one move away from getting checkmated people try to check or manouver with checks Anyway i agree on no evaluation indicator with you Agad but for different reasons. Any game between professional players the evaluation would be really minimal in how it changes and only interesting in new lines, so that is that much space wasted on the screen. But really changes are small. And although i believe u can prepare a 30 move evaluation, the reality is that players dint calc that far. Probably up to 15? But still its a bad indicator because it very much depends on what is played. It can change abruptly. Its very volatile, so as such its going to become idiotic too when exchanges happen, perhaps. Anyway highly volatile indicators do not offer anything but worry and misinformation because high volatility means the game can go either way which is true. A better indicatir would perhaps involve weighting available lines of play with the unltimate evaluation at a certain depth including the branches so that one could asses which the most stable line of play is that risks the least upset in an advantage, if one would want that. But I suspect players would avoid stability if they are losing, they would want to open the possible (legal) lines of play and increase (thus) volatility, whereas cold calculating players that are wining would want to follow stable weighted lines, kinda like Fritz plays, mofo makes u wanna quit by strangling you. Anyway please no evaluation indicators.

Regarding the evaluation. I treated myself to a Threadripper 3970X over a year ago and immediately used it for leela, stockfish and later (and now) for fishnet lichess analysis in cold months. Anyway, Agadmator once posted a hard chess puzzle and someone in the comment section wondered how the best continuation was. I plugged the position into stockfish and after 30min it reached depth 80 and sometimes 90. So I let it calculate the first move for 30min and then the next and so on and after 12h the position was solved in my opinion. As a sidenote, even at that depth the first 3 top lines changed quite a bit. So let us get Agadmator a Threadripper so he can treat us with double the depth or double the videos while investing the same time =)

There was an easier way to win for Levon, wasn't there? From 12:52 he could take the night to e6. As the rook from d8 can't move so from e6 the knight would have captured the rook from d8 (if he moves the rook it is even easier, just move the queen to h8). If not, the pawn would go to f8 (make it a queen) and just move the knight from d8.

I believe if you dobtge analysis before recording, the evaluation bar wouldn't jump up and down all the time, it would remember the analysis. At least lichess does so ("request computer analysis"). That being said, I think we don't need to see it. It would be a spoiler for our own thinking about the position. Also, when one of the players blunders, you tell us that it's a blunder. It really does not matter, if the bar went from +0.7 to -2.4 or from +0.9 to -2.2 If it's a big blunder, like mate in 4 or what, you tell us as well. And we can find the best move without having the spoiler that it's a mate (M4) or just a pawn grab (+1) or tactic winning a piece (+3 or whatever)

An evaluation bar would be distracting. The time players have on the clock would be useful, I don't know how easy that would be to add though

I am very thankful and respectful to everyone who is not becoming upset with Gotham chess suppressing Agadmator both of these gentlemen have enhanced chess to all of our enjoyment let us continue to reach out to one another in the name of good chess and sportsmanship and respect and knock off all the trolling and the attacking it serves no purpose and does not support chess or enhance our chess enjoyment

Showing the engine evaluation can give you an illusion of understanding the position. You think more critically without it.
