Idk if you will get to read this, but I thought I'd explain a couple things. In the scene where young Roku and Sozin were playing in the grass, Roku trips backwards over a tree root. Sozin stops his fall, but then let's him fall over in the end. This is a direct foreshadowing of the end of the episode. Sozin came to Roku's aid during the volcano eruption, but ending up letting him "fall" in the end. The writers used very clever film techniques during the conversation between Iroh and Zuko. In every shot of Zuko, he is shown to be behind bars and in the dark, while Iroh is always shown to be in the light and free. Even though Iroh is the one in jail, Zuko is the one who is mentally trapped. Iroh explained the path to redemption.

Ok nobody has mentioned this yet so I'll say it. Shredder pay attention cause this is cinematography at its finest. In the scene where Zuko learns that Roku was his great grandfather Zuko's character is primarily conveyed visually. As Zuko is brought to greater awareness of his character defining struggle, it is actually him who is being portrayed as being the one behind prison bars, rather than Iroh who is literally speaking imprisoned. The imagery of this scene is composed to make it visually apparent that while Iroh is the one who is physically behind bars, Zuko is the one who is symbolically behind bars. As the truth is revealed to Zuko about Roku being his great grandfather, the camera pulls back to visualize Zuko's imprisonment, and the camera pushes in to reveal Iroh's freedom. After that Zuko is pressed up at the edge of the image in shadowy darkness, as the bars cut him off from the seemingly free space in which Iroh sits before a patch of light. This is probably the greatest image in the whole series because of the cinematic mastery in which it is presented.

The volcano was supposed to be an extinction level event. Sozin said he could feel the tremors near him. So the volcano would have messed up more of the fire nation

No one is probably gonna see this but I believe the reason Roku stayed was because the volcano was very big, that even Sozin who was miles away was able to sense it. So he probably wanted to make sure all his people were safe and no other unexpected explosions follow.

The cinematography in the Iroh prison scenes is always perfect. Iroh is the one in prison, but all the shots have Iroh in the light and Zuko in the dark, and head-on shots of Iroh don't show the bars while the head-on shots of Zuko do. Iroh may be the one in jail, but Zuko is the one imprisoned. (Also, please note that the red dragon was Roku's and the blue dragon was Sozin's; in Zuko's fever visions, the Azula-voiced dragon was blue and the Iroh-voiced dragon was red.) (Also also, this was the first time we hear Iroh's new voice actor after Mako's death, if I'm remembering correctly. You can tell if you know he's different, but he does a good job.) The Avatar and the Fire Lord is definitely an underrated episode, and pairs well with The Storm as a spiritual two-parter.

The character of zuko is in my opinion still one of the best written ever. The banished prince, the eternal struggle between good and evil. From his grandfathers to his face. To the story in the abatar the last airbender. His whole life was pure fighting against his inner conflicting personalities

I think the runaway is an amazing episode because it brings depth to a character we don't explore all too often. toph doesn't necessarily have an arc like sokka, but she does become more vulnerable and opens up to katara. we also get to see how much katara means to the group. like toph said, she is kind, compassionate and genuinely cares. her strength is what got them out of the desert, her kindness is what made toph open up about feeling guilty, and her compassion makes Aang feel less alone in a world where he is the last of his kind. the underrated value of katara is something people so often overlook and disregard because she constantly talks about how her mom died. yet they fail to realize that is how she empathizes with the grief and hurt that others experience. that is just another way of her trying to care for others. with avatar gaining more and more fans on Netflix I'm seeing so many more people hate on her. but they don't see how lost and hopeless (and probably dead) the group would be without her. each character brings something. toph is much much needed muscle in the group, and the one who always has a different way of viewing situations. katara is the caring and compassionate one, always willing to help others even if she gets nothing in return. sokka is the leader, the planner, the brains behind so many of their successes. aang is the avatar, who keeps the group in balance, who gives them hope, and protects them at any cost.

Quick thing, if you noticed Sozin has a blue dragon and Roku's dragon, Fang, is a red dragon. Furthermore, after Zuko freed Appa from Lake Laogai, he had a dream with a blue dragon with Azula's voice and a red dragon with Iroh's dragon. Those are literally the two parts of his consciousness fighting.

13:56 "Shouldn't have spared him, man. Should've just ended him when you got the chance" But then, Zuko would never have been born... and neither would Iroh. Also, I was thinking - if Roku had killed Sozin, the war could have happened either way. Sozin had no children at that point, no heirs. It'd cause a big problem for the Fire Nation, and the next leader would have a "justified cause" and do the exact same thing Sozin did. There's no way to know if Roku could have prevented the war by simply killing Sozin. Roku did a selfless deed, and even if it backfired, it was still worthwhile.

Roku stayed to give EVERYONE the chance to escape the volcano. At least that's how I understood it.
@stuyhermione14994 жыл бұрын
That is actually a way better explanation/theory - we don’t exactly get confirmation that EVERYONE left the volcanic island right away...🤔
@chilibreath4 жыл бұрын
@@stuyhermione1499 the creators of the show do their research. While it looks like the residents are safe leaving the island in the boats, you have to consider that, with how violent this eruption is, are they safe from the epicenter? The volcano was spitting lava & molten rocks. That's why Roku stayed and Sozin came to help (though he showed his true colors when Roku went down).

Wholesome parallel: When Toph asks Aang if he thinks friendships can last more than one lifetime, he replies yes. You can see his claim turns to be true, when in TLOK, Korra immediately recognizes Toph despite them being in a dark cave and and the fact that they have never met each other.

I don’t know if someone already said it but I read somewhere that volcano eruptions don’t work like that. The smoke is obviously kinda “poisonous” and that’s why Roku couldn’t just leave it that way. Someone said that the smoke could kill people who lived not far from that island.
