Chennai is a nice place. I studied & worked there for 5 years. As weird as it sounds, riding around the fish market road (beside Marina beach) in the evening is pleasant since there's less traffic on that road. My Chennai experience was great because luckily I never had any bad interactions with anyone, and I'll always love and respect Tamil people for that. Tamil people are very artistic, welcoming and emotional people. I guess that explains their love for traditional (live stage shows) and modern cinema.
