At one point in the video, I accidentally say that teams didn't like deferring back in 1998 on kickoffs. Meant to say that they could not defer, as there was no option to defer back then. Doesn't change anything about the story, but just thought I'd make a note of that. Apologies for the error!

And now Brian Mitchell is a sports radio host here in the DC area. Wonder if he'll ever run a similar promotion.😂
@chrisguardiano61438 ай бұрын
This is very similar to what happened in the Premier League 3 years later between MG Cars & Aston Villa where MG would give a fan a brand new ZS (the top of the line four door that cost 40,000 pounds) if one of their goalies could score a goal in a match. For some context, a goalie scoring in soccer (and in hockey) is one of the rarest things to happen & prior to 2001 it had never been done before in the Premier League. Heck it had never even been done in the over 100+ year history of English soccer at the time. However during Aston Villa's match vs Everton, it actually happened when legendary goalie Peter Schmeichel scored a volley off of a last minute corner to score in a 3-2 defeat. Unlike what happened in the video, this goal stood which meant MG had to hold up their end of their deal which they gave to a 75 year old lifelong Aston Villa supporter who then gave the car to his 18 year old grandson as a first car. Since this goal happened, goalies scoring in the Premier League has happened 5 more times with USMNT legends Tim Howard & Brad Friedel being added to this list. As for MG, they got bought by a Chinese car company in 2005 due to the serious financial problems of the MG Rover Group & are an absolute shell of what they were back in the 1960's when the MGB (the brands most famous car) was a pop culture icon especially in the UK.

A very similar thing happened in the CFL. A radio did a promotion where if a team returned TWO kickoffs for touchdowns in a game, someone previously chosen would win $1 Million. Not to nitpick but 1998 was not the first time the Cards were in the playoff hunt in Arizona. In their first season there in 1988, after week 11, they were 7-4 and in first place. They then did the Cardinal thing and lost their last 5 games to finish 7-9 in what would be Neil Lomax's final season. Incidentally, the Deadskins lost this game because of a bad snap on a punt that ended up being a safety. And this was also the season of the Cardiac Cards 2.0 as they won 6 games on last minute field goals including the game that sent them into the playoffs, a 16-13 win on a 52 yard Chris Jacke FG as time expired.

Well, actually the Redskins DID run the opening kickoff back for a TD subsequent to the 1967 season -- I know this because I was a kid and saw it happen -- much to the embarrassment of the home team and entire crowd. Unfortunately, it didn't "count" for NFL game statistics because it was a PRESEASON game as opposed to a regular season game. But make no mistake: it was every bit a "real" game with real "starting players" at the outset, and the TD was 100% legit. The name of the Wasington player was seared into my disappointed mind: Herb Mul-Key (sp?) Here is the setting: it was the opening NFL preseason game of 1973, and the game was in Buffalo between the visiting Redskins and the host Bills. What made the play more difficult to stomach is the fact that it was the opening kickoff in the FIRST-EVER/INAUGURAL game at the Bills' BRAND NEW STADIUM -- then called Rich Stadium (now called Highmark Stadium) ... which will be replaced at the start of the 2026 NFL season with a new stadium currently under construction across the street from the current stadium. Even back then the Bills couldn't catch a break!

I know about Mitchell's kickoff return credentials as a Buccaneers fan. I still remember him taking the opening kickoff of January 2003's NFCCG deep into Bucs territory when he was an Eagle. As for Mitchell's return in the game discussed here, Patrice Alexander deserved to be fired. I've seen tons of braindead penalties in my 38+ years of watching football, but this one was especially asinine because by the time Alexander made that unnecessary tackle, Mitchell had smoked everyone wearing cardinal, white and black.
