What's the most bewildering thing about this is that they added him back. While I wouldn't agree with it, I could see why they might not remove him before the conviction or even after with the reasoning of something like "well he was still a key player for a very long time during a very successful stint for the club regardless of what happens off the pitch". Again, I don't agree with it, but there's at least some reasoning there. But I cannot imagine why you would remove him from the legends list and then add him back after he's convicted in court. It's just completely nonsensical.

His conviction does not charge the fact that he played football and that he was good at it. His being a legend is based on football reasons, not personal character. He is a legend, that does not make him free.. he is in prison. With your analogy, it means a person that goes to prison should just stop breathing. Let me play devil's advocate here. Should a man be "erased from history" because of an evil deed? I mean... The man IS a Barcelona Legend. On the pitch. Wasn't he, until recently, the literal most "trophied" player of all time? Not trying to defend him or his conduct off the pitch whatsoever, but should a person's history be erased due to him commiting a crime unrelated to the reason why he's considered a Legend? As far as I know, he's not considered a legend for his morals, but his footbal. As an exercize: Suppose Cruyff kicked babies for sport, should he not be considered a legendary player? Pelé literally abandoned his own child. Should his plays be forgotten? Messi endorses an autoritarian regime that murders gay people (indirectly, but still does lend his image to it), isn't he the greatest of the millenium? Isn't Michel Platini one of the LEGENDS of midfield, despite all the corruption behind the scenes after retiring from the sport? Hell, the examples are nearly infinite. Criticize, condemn, chastise all you want... be my guest. But choosing to forget history is madness.
@TheSoulDivided6 ай бұрын
I see what you're saying, but I think there's a big difference between recognizing a player's accomplishments and celebrating a guy who is currently in prison for rape charges as one of the paragons of your team's history
@mapas7206 ай бұрын
Well you can look at what WWE has done over the last 20 years. They had an iconic wrestler like Chris Benoit who committed horrible crimes and was almost completely erased from history. They never talk about him, nor his accolades, even though he had quite a few. And it seems like they are following the same route with Vince McMahon who was president of the company and one of their faces for almost 40 years, and he hasn't even been declared guilty yet, but has a pending lawsuit and so many accusations with some awful stories to back them up. So no, you don't *have* to erase these people from history since what they have done is outside of their professional lives, in which they were clearly very good, but you can choose not to shine a spotlight on people who have actively damaged others through their actions.
@andrewleah19836 ай бұрын
No but yes. No in the same why we don’t delete Hitler from the history books but yes in the same way he should lose his legendary status. He just happens to be a good right-back/wing-back to play for Barca but let’s leave it at that.

Barça removing Dani Alves from a section in their webpage, that nobody knew was there before this hit the news, will not erase Dani Alves from history. Barça are however erasing Alves' conviction from the version of history they are presenting on their site by omitting any mention of it in their profile that mainly praises Alves. Literally seems like choosing to forget history, since it had to be a concious decision to put him back up there. Very bad PR for the team at the very least

Absolute scumm human to rape, still a footballing legend. I have never understood why theese two are being put together all the time theese days as if athleetes are not young people who have alot of money and attention thrown at them before they develop a personality. Expecting people not to rape is a pretty reasonable expectation. Being a great human has nothing to do with football tho. I do not expect that from the athleetes i like but it is a big bonus. The man is still a legend in football his actions outside the football field reduce him as a human not as a footballer.

Apparently its really hard for some people to understand, that you can be very good and successful at something, while also doing very bad things outside of the thing, youre successful at. Doesnt mean, that one should be used to re evaluate the other. If he has committed the crime, than its only fair, that he gets punished. But not by people digging in his past and trying to erase everything he has achieved in his history. People are not just black or white. And we should be able to look at the good, as well the bad.
