Catterall doesn't understand football. Go back 20 years ago and look at the Brazilian team then compared to now. The French, Dutch, Italians and Germans were all much more impressive then now. You must have missed our second round game. I’ll give you a short recap. Against the 45th ranked team in the world(and have a look at the great teams ranked 30-40) we didn’t have a shot on target for 95 minutes. He didn’t change the system, he didn’t make the substitutes til they were way too late and then with almost the last kick of the game Bellingham scored a one in a hundred wonder goal. It is one of the most clueless managerial displays yo7 will ever see. They won that game in spite of GS not because of him. And as you missed the game, you might want to catch up with GS post match interviews where he gaslights a nation with the ‘no easy game’ and ‘world class opponents’ and ‘entitled’ England fans. If you think he’s been a decent manager who’s lead a ‘shambles’ to back to back Euro finals, with tough draws and exciting football, I bet you can5 wait to see the big club he manages next

@rwachwater4408 Mate, in case you didn't know. Football isn't played on paper or via rankings, and you also need to have respect for all of the countries who qualified for these finals. Secondly, in tournament football, it's never about playing the best football as the best teams rarely win tournaments.....it's about getting thru the rounds. The fact that people consistently and conveniently saying he is lucky is such shame.....especially since England has only been to 1 major final in the 100-year history of the sport. I agree that sometimes his tactics are confusing, but you have to give him credit. Imagine he made those subs versus Holland and STILL doesn't get the credit.

Only chance we'll win is not by technical ability and having a better game, it's the resilience of the ref. Kane milked the non penalty, recognised the ref can be "gotten at " and started to dive about around the Dutch box. Dark Forces seem to be aiding England in the same way they did for Argentina in Qatar. Hoping for a good game of football so nothing gets tainted and the final is remembered for honesty & integrity...

The difference with 2004 and 2006 teams was that England played the wrong formation. If we would have had Carrick sitting, with Scholes and Gerrard or Scholes and Lampard infront, we would have controlled midfields much better. Unfortunately Owen would have to have held the bench. Also, the standard of the top teams was higher than it is now.

It's stupid to make out like no other manager could do as well. Obviously a lot depends on if he can win tomorrow but if he doesn't then there's nothing to say another manager couldn't win something with 4 goes at it with a current crop of excellent talent. Look at Spain, they had a managerial change after winning a Euros in 2008 for the first time since the 60's, then go on to win the next 2 tournaments.

Not to be too negative here because I do like Southgate and think he has overall done a lot of good for English football. That said, he did pick up from a very low bar so to claim he has done a "fantastic" job is delusional, in actuality he's only done what you'd expect any half decent manager to achieve with the players and draws he's had. Even Boris Johnson could've won something with this team, and the decisions he EVENTUALLY makes seem to only echo what every Tom Dick and Harry on the street has been telling him to do all along such as subbing off Kane, leaving maguire out etc. Funny how he's only now making these decisions on the back of every other Joe Bloggs saying it first...

The complete myth that we were "the better team" against France when we got knocked out is something I always find funny when I hear clueless people peddling it. Only people with zero ball knowledge think we were the "better team". Just because you have more possession and you have more chances, it doesn't necessarily mean you were the better team. France willingly let us have possession that game because they knew we weren't going to do anything to it, especially when they sat back deep in the second half. It's called "a game plan", and France tactically fulfilled theirs perfectly when they knocked us out. They were by far the best team in that tournament and we weren't the only team they played like that against. They did the exact same thing against Morocco the following game against Morocco in the second half and pulled it off perfectly. The definition of zero ball knowledge is thinking you were the better team just because you had more possession and shots on paper.

Maybe re-read it a few times and eventually you'll get it. I mean if you really need it laying out to you here it is: England in the '24 Euros and France in the '22 World Cup are worlds apart in terms of playstyle and tactics. We've stunk the place out every game this tournament and luckily scraped by due to individual brilliance from certain players. Southgate has been extremely, extremely lucky to get through to the final given how useless he's been tactically. France in the '22 World Cup actually played really well and positively during the tournament and thoroughly deserved to get through to the final and win it. Their manager also wasn't tactically inept unlike Southgate. He managed to get the team to play positive, attacking football when they could, then against certain opposition (i.e. England), he adapted and played defensively when needed. And it worked. And they won. Summary: It's possible to play attacking football when you can, but also adapt to certain opposition and play defensively to get the job done when necessary. It's called being versatile and being able to see out a game plan. I don't know what you thought my comment was saying or implying but I definitely wasn't saying that parking the bus is the ultimate and best way of playing football. Or that Southgate is a "managerial genius" for doing what he's done this tournament (which to be honest, is next to nothing, he's been useless) - because he definitely isn't. Absolutely no idea how you reached the conclusion you did after reading that comment but hopefully that clears things up mate. Have a good one. 👍

Easy run: France 98 - Paraguay beaten after extra time. Then Italy on pens, Croatia and then Brazil with Ronaldo suffering a fit. 2002 Brazil beat Denmark, England, Turkey and then a poor German side who beat Japan and Korea. I could go on. Rarely do you have to beat 3 or 4 superpowers on the bounce. Swiss, Holland and Spain is not easy.

England had a lucky draw when they played iceland and got knocked out.... England had a lucky draw when they were in a group with costa rica and couldn't get out of the group. In 2008, England were in a qualifying group with Estonia, Andorra, Macedonia, Russia, Croatia and Israel and they couldn't even qualify. This idea that England were always knocked out by the France's and Portugal's of this world is a myth. The team has forever been underperforming. Why is it so hard for the English to give credit to Southgate? You may not like his selections, you may not like his tactics or demeanor but whatever he is doing is working. For a country that has never won this tournament, the English are pretty fanciful about how they want to win.

He took Bournemouth from league 3 to premier league in 5 years, all whilst playing brave, attractive winning football, even whilst having infearer players!! I believe you need a history lesson....Garath Southgate won nothin and had 8 years in the job, but prior to him getting the job in l his only club job at Middlesbrough ended with him getting them relagated and sacked and I remember watching them too...not good! So by these standards all the above are much better than apparently required 👌
