You get over the whole emotional catharsis of sorrow and joy of that scene, and then you switch to Kelly as if being reminded for the first time in a while that she even exists. And when she faints revealing her husband and kid you kind of just have this swift transition of: " Oh. OH. *Ohhhhhh noooo...* " And the whole revelation hiding in plain sight is revealed that life went on for everyone else.

About 3 months before I went to see this movie in theatres, my Dad, whose name was Wilson, passed from a short yet brave battle with lung cancer. Certainly didn't need any extra layer of emotion that I would bring to that scene but boy Tom Hanks crying out for Wilson really messed me up as I sat in my seat in the theater. Still gets me 23 years later.

People love to joke this scene but they don't under the situation; the man has been stuck on an island alone for *4 YEARS* just trying to survive. That volleyball was a coping mechanism for him so he didn't go insane. It gave him something to talk to because sometimes even just the sound of your own voice can help keep you sane.

The feelings don't have to be reciprocated to be real and tangible. Chuck didn't lose a ball, he lost his best friend, a companion who'd kept him company -- and oddly enough, sane -- for years. The pain was very, very real for him.

I just watched this reaction with you ladies and were quite confused at the ending and you are correct. I looked it up and other people said at the end instead of Chuck staring at the crossroads , the it showed him getting in his vehicle and driving away from the camera. Apparently any different is not on any recent dvd. So is that what you ladies remember? It seems the director wanted the ending to be decided for the viewer whether he went back to the wings house or not. The other option is now that chuck has returned would she divorce her husband.

She faints when she hears he is alive because she knows that she was unfaithful to him and she Castaway their relationship (just like the guy was doing in the beginning in Russia to the woman he would eventually meet). They were both Castaway by their spouses/Partners. Because the movie is not called Cast Away. It is Castaway. Think about it and watch it again knowing she’s using him to get her education while cheating on him. Makes the movie that much better.
