This song has so many cool gems. 1) there's no drummer. Back in the day, a lot of country music venues didn't allow drum kits. So what Johnny Cash did was slip a dollar bill under the strings of his guitar, and strum it with his fingernails. Boom, it sounds like a brushed snare. 2) the song goes through like 5 key changes, before every verse. If you listen, you great Johnny hum before each verse. That's him trying to find his new note every key change. Backing him on this track is Luther Perkins on lead guitar, and Marshall Grant on double bass. He would add a drummer two years later, but at this time (1957), the band was just a three-piece: Johnny, Luther, and Marshall.

Love the back story! I also understand that at other times he would leave a piece of waxed paper between his strings for that similar percussive damping effect.

Johnny Cash would bail out on Sam Phillips and Sun Records after two years in 1958, switching over to Columbia Records. The reasons? Sam Phillips didn't like drums, and he had no use for gospel music...

My uncle was working as a service worker at a hotel in Germany. He had to bring food up to Johnny Cash’s room. When he arrived with the food Mr. Cash invited him in and asked him to sit down. He shared his food with him, talked, and told stories for a couple of hours before sending him on his way. My uncle said he couldn’t believe how friendly, personable and down to earth he was. He was a different kind of star than what we are use to.

"I walk the line" is a great Johnny Cash biopic... Starring Joaquin Phoenix (who sang all the Cash songs) as Johnny Cash & Reese Witherspoon as June Carter. The movie depicts his tragedy in Arkansas, losing his brother as a child... joining the US Air Force... getting married young to his first wife... Cash forming a band in Nashville and getting to make his own music on Sun Records and becoming a star in country music in the 50's, when he met June Carter... and then his descent into drug and alcohol addiction... and finally, his redemption.

All of his hits charted in Country. "I Walk The Line" and "Ring Of Fire" were 2 of only a hand full of his hits to also chart in the Pop genre. The website, playbackfm, shows in their article, "Top 66 Johnny Cash Song Chart Appearances", that all 66 songs charted in Country. Of those, only 5 also charted in Pop: "I Walk The Line", Ring Of Fire", "Folsom Prison Blues", "A Boy Named Sue" and "Hurt". There might be a more accurate list. If so, my bad.

@@avidrdr5640 Au contraire, as 0f 2006, Cash charted 48 singles on the Billboard Pop chart. Granted, the Country chart was where his records charted highest but between 1956 ("I Walk The Line") through 1976 ("One Piece at a Time") he did cross over to the Pop chart 48 times. His only Top 10 record on the Pop chart was "A Boy Named Sue" peaking @ #2 for 3 weeks in 1969.

I can't remember a time in my life that I didn't listen to Johnny Cash. He was my Mom's favorite. My Mom and Aunt were little children during the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl. They really identified with Johnny's music as well as Waylon Jennings and Merle Haggard, who wrote songs that touched on their own experiences. My Mom and aunt would talk about him and his wife June as if they were family members. Every time my auntie would come over the conversation would turn to what they had read about them in the magazines, what June was wearing, when his new album would come out. I literally, actually believed that he was one of my uncles. Finally one day when I was about age six I interrupted the conversation and asked when was I going to get to meet Uncle Johnny and why couldn't we go to their house and visit? That got quite a laugh from the family, but in my heart he is still Uncle Johnny.

He changes keys on every verse. The last verse is an octave lower than the first. That is why you hear him hum between verses, so he can sing it in the new key. Not many singers could pull that feat off. Johnny was special.

Johnny was such an unpretentious, kind person. I had the privilege of taking care of him and other members of his family in the late 80’s early 90’s. On occasion he’d be seen shopping at a store near his home and when approached by someone recognizing him he’d always be patient and gracious to them. I have a tour jacket and a signed copy of his novel he wrote about the Apostle Paul that I treasure.

Johnny wrote this song for June Carter when she was touring with him, Carl Perkins and, Jerry Lee Lewis. Johnny fell in love with June but, she wouldn't go out with him because, at that time they were both married to different people. They did a concert one night and, Johnny's wife Vivian accused June of going with Johnny, after this June decided that if she was going to get accused of it, she may as well do it so, she did! June was married to Carl Smith and they had 2 girls, Carl had been messing around on June so, she divorced him, after Johnny wrote WALK THE LINE for June, June wrote RING OF FIRE for Johnny! The rest is history! You all need to watch the movie WALK THE LINE, it's about Johnny and Junes life! You will love it I promise!

Definitely hit up "Ring of Fire". The story goes that he was writing the song "Ring of Fire" and couldn't find a way to mesh the sounds. That night he had a dream in which he added Mexican horns to the piece. The next day he recorded it with the horns and it became one of his biggest and most iconic hits. Check it out and let us know. Blessings to you and yours.

It's a challenging song to sing because of the key changes. He starts doing a circle of fourths. The first verse is in the key of F. At the end of the verse, the guitar walks up to Bb, which is the fourth note in the F major scale. The second verse is in the key of Bb. At the the end of that verse, the guitar walks up to Eb, which is the fourth note in the Bb major scale. Eventually, the circle would have taken him back to the key of F but he then breaks the pattern and the guitar walks to Bb again, which is the _fifth_ note in the key of Eb. The third verse is then in Bb. At the end of that verse, the guitar walks to the fifth again, allowing him to do the final verse in F. He could have eventually returned to F by continuing the circle of fourths but he would have had to write many more verses and the song would have been too long for the radio format of the time. Many cover bands do his song "Folsom Prison Blues" in the key of E because it's easier to play but he did it in F. At the end of every verse, the singer has to hit the first note of the scale. In the key of E, that's E of course but in F the note is F. For many of us, it's a lot easier to hit that low F than the low E even though they're only a semitone apart. My band does it in F. He had an iconic voice but his vocal range was limited. Great singers don't necessarily have the most technically impressive voices. Rather, they learn how to get the best out of the voice they have. In that regard, Johnny Cash was a great singer.
