"I'm the damn fool that shot him" IS a really interesting choice but I think it's really cool! You could call it a spoiler because it does tell you what's gonna happen, but by giving you that information right off the bat, it creates insane tension through the whole story. Because you're introduced to them, see how they meet, how they progress, how the relationship changes, and through all of it, there's the tension of knowing you can't take ot for granted, because you know how it's gonna end, and that it's gonna be a proeminent part of the play. It makes you sit on the edge of your seat and keep this sense of unease whenever they share the stage. Exchanging susprise, for suspense.

SPOILERS INBOUND: You could say the same about the "i loved him" line, because it's said by all 3 of them. Of course this is for the stage production part of it, cause you might not be able to tell just in the audio. All the other ones having double meaning, like Morius said, are way more subtle, because well... the actors are playing more the one character. But having Angelica, Eliza and Maria all singing "i loved him" i would say is quite the spoiler. Of course, i don't tgink many people remember it on the first watch, but yk.

It's also quite prevalent in one of, if not the first musical he wrote, "In the Heights." There's a movie for it and the original is just as great with the same style. (Lin wrote In the Heights way before Hamilton, I believe he was a sophomore in high school.) It's a great musical, and I think a series of reacting to "In the Heights" would be great. Also my latest obsessions, "Ride the Cyclone" and "Frozen: the Musical" might be good ones to go over. RTC is short, with just 1 hour and 45 minutes of runtime on the slime tutorial, and I think only 10 full-length songs. Frozen is about 2 and a half hours of runtime, which doesn't include the songs that were replaced or ones that had to be taken out entirely. Both are just about as weird and great of musicals you can get, with lots of thematic elements. Edit: Ride the Cyclone is not by Lin, it's by two different composers. And Frozen: the Musical is by the same people that wrote the score for the movie. Also, please don't hate me for not knowing older musicals, I got into musical theater VERY recently, so I know the song lists for 6, maybe 7 musicals from after the 2000s.

yep, i wondered if anyone was gonna comment on this. hamilton is a commoner, a very poor one with no parents from a region that would be discriminated against too, and intends to graduate from princeton and be rubbing elbows with people from the landed gentry and very wealthy landowners. if he doesn't want to be the punching bag, he needs to get more social standing, and the only realistic way for him to get that is to get some minor title via a war and then ideally marry into further status... or POSSIBLY find a family who's willing to let him marry up into them as an untitled, unlanded, poor man with no outstanding deeds to his name, which is. unlikely, to say the least. even if he managed to make a woman fall in love with him, they'd be more likely to disown her than let him marry in.

Casper using Epic as perspective is really funny to me because I did the reverse with Epic. I view Odysseus and Eurylochus's relationship like Alexander and Burr's. Eurylochus is the voice of reason trying to keep Odysseus from getting himself killed with his insane ideas (harpooning a floating sky) in the same way that Burr is pragmatic and tries to keep Alexander from fucking around and finding out ("talk less, smile more", "You wanna get ahead? fools who run their mouths off wind up dead."), and the real Burr actually prevented a duel between Alexander and James Monroe.

Fun fact about the opening number: the white costumes are called the "storyteller costumes". So you're literally seeing Hamilton step out of the narrative ether and *into* the scene when he chucks his white coat and puts on the brown one. Also interesting that our narrator doesn't get a storyteller costume - he's occupying his own weird in-scene and also fourth-wall-breaking space from the time the first note plays until the play ends.

I once overthought Hamilton's singing ability. To me, in the musical rapping feels more like its used for "professional" moments like when they debate, and plan. While singing is more used for emotional moments. The fact that the songs we only hear Hamilton sings are when he is going through extremely emotional shows how much he is better at the intellectual things than the emotional.

I got into Hamilton through my younger sister. She was the one who was obsessed with Hamilton. She loved it and got really good at finding the bootlegs before it was on Disney+. She had this notebook where she wrote down everything she observed, specific costume changes or set changes, specific dance moves or how extras acted amongst each other. She would dedicate some watch through to just watch one character and note everything they did that she could find, sometimes this included the main cast but she loved the dedication to the extras as well. So, as a history buff and lover of musicals, this is an interesting musical for me. It has many great songs and I can't wait to see you cover them. For those who might be interested in history, funny thing is that we don't actually know when Burr met Hamilton, but in history their relationship was kind of the opposite of in the musical. They first met and butted heads, but worked closer as time went on. A similar case to Laurens, Lafayette, and Mulligan. Hamilton didn't meet Lafayette or Laurens until the Revolution was well under way and he was serving in the army. A point that isn't mentioned at all is that Mulligan is actually who Hamilton would have met *first* in New York, as the two lived together while Hamilton attended college and Mulligan probably never actually met either Laurens or Lafayette. Of course they merged all this together for the musical as its necessary for Hamilton's story, but it's interesting to see the little parts of history that remain after the adaptation.

the musical noted at 27:41 is "Tick Tick Boom"! LMM directed the movie but didn't do any writing for it.

Other people have already said this, but Lin himself has admitted that he’s not the strongest singer (although he has improved since Hamilton) what I find really respectable though is not only that he’s self aware of that fact, but also smart enough to surround himself by all of these other INCREDIBLY talented people to make up his cast!

The 'Hamilton' to 'Epic:The Musical' pipeline is real. Adore this musical, I still know all these songs by heart and I've not listened to some of them in years lol :D

The way Lin Manuel Miranda adds a bit of comedy into the musical during his performance as Hamilton

I'm trying to say this without being rude. Casper seems like a smart dude. I dont think you need to be spelling things out for him in the way that you do.

Oh wait wait. Did anyone mention that when Hercules says “it’s hard to have intercourse over four sets of corsets” is a double entendre? It’s both him saying “it’s hard to talk when I’m laced up/held back like this” as in social intercourse AND a continuation of his your mom joke.

I really like "Gals, Blokes and all other folks". I like to say "guys, gals, and non-binary pals"

Oh, wonderful. Another half hour video that I MUST watch and don’t have time for. It’s your fault I don’t get enough sleep 😉

I believe the musical you are referring to, Casper, was the one about the guy who wrote Rent.

There's a website that has basically every American historical document archived, and I've read some of what Alexander wrote, and it felt super weird at first, because since he was so good with words, I forgot that literacy was basically nonexistent back then. He misspelled a lot of (in my opinion easy) words.
