Its fun playing this bit when you're Adaar though as you get a Qunari option to just look as menacing as possible without having to do anything. Dorian will mildly disapprove but it gets you the amulet and makes the merchant nearly shit his pants.

He was never likely to say they were lovers. That's what the "friends" remark implicated. Dorian was trying to avoid the impression that he was involved with the Inquisitor so that the merchant wouldn't try to use him in that way, which was precisely what the man was trying to do. The "he's NOT my friend" was meant to play that down and remove it from the discussion.

Whenever I do this quest, to avoid him getting mad at me, I get the note from Leliana's person and go straight to Orlais to get the amulet and don't talk to Dorian until I gift it to him. He's still a LITTLE bit mad, but not nearly as much.

nambnb It works with a qunari and a non mage Trevelyan. The intimidation works also if you blackmailed Gaspard, Celene and Briala into working together for the Inquisition.
