FUN FACT (Not a spoiler): According to a Tumblr post by series creator Frank Angones, had the actor not passed by the time this episode was put into production, his personal choice for the voice of Scrooge's father would have been the legendary Alan Young...Who voiced Scrooge McDuck from the character's first animated appearance in 1983's "Mickey's Christmas Carol" as well as the original 1987 "Ducktales" and every other animated appearance (including the 2013 remastered release of the 1989 NES game) up until Young passed in 2016. We could've had an episode where OG Scrooge and 2017 Scrooge shared a B-plot.

In this show, Scrooge McDuck is "only" a bit over 150 years old, he was born in 1867. This is because the creators wanted to keep his original backstory of getting rich during the Klondike Gold Rush, but also wanted to have the main story set in present-day. Hence some time-shenanigans needed to be made up to explain that he is still alive. However, that his parents are still alive is unusual for the Duck-franchise, as when they appear, they are typically only seen in flashbacks. Here they came up with a curse to explain their "immortality".

Has it been confirmed as to how Clan McDuck became impoverished? I’m guessing the fallout of (the Duckverse version of) the Battle of Culloden, in which Bonney Prince Charlie/Charles Stuart lost and a lot of fallout to the Irish and Scottish landowners… Thus by Fergus McDuck’s time, they were barely scraping by until Scrooge found his fortune.

I thought it applied to Scrooge, Hortense, and Matilda too (and I think the creators confirmed it) which is how they are all still alive and why Hortense was able to have the twins in the 1980s, which is not only well past childbearing age but also past the age she would’ve died if she aged normally.

I read that the 2017 Ducktales creators had hoped for Scrooge's Dad to be voiced by Alan Young (the voice of Scrooge McDuck since 1974 and voiced him in the 1987 Ducktales) and Scrooge's Mom by June Foray (the voice of Magica De Spell since 1987 from the original 1987 Ducktales). Sadly both passed away (2016 and 2017) before that could happen.

Huey and Louie's reactions to finding out what Dewey's been doing are absolutely fascinating. Huey's anger is the anticipated response, of course, angry that he didn't know something as much as that Dewey kept this info about their mom from him. But then LOUIE. Louie who is so rarely vulnerable, so usually apathetic, having THAT response. Heartbreaking. I think deep down, Dewey wasn't trying to protect his brothers by not telling them - I think, as the middle child, he wanted something for himself, a connection to their mom who might give him the attention he craves so badly. Understandable, but Louie's reaction makes it clear, whatever Dewey's reason, that was NOT okay. They're her sons too. They all deserve to know, no matter how bad it is.

This episode is reminiscent of a story in "The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck" by Don Rosa, in which Scrooge visits his parents back home, then after he leaves we discover in the last panel that they were ghosts all along. In the same book the dime reveal has a very different meaning. Scrooge was basically inspired to work hard and be self-reliant by the fact he felt cheated, because he was paid with money he could not spend.
@JediMB3 ай бұрын
Ah, that's not quite what happened. When Scrooge returned after becoming a billionaire, his father was very much still alive, but one of the first things he did upon his return was to visit his mother's grave. At the end of the story, though, when Scrooge, Matilda and Hortense left for Duckburg, Fergus had quietly passed away during the night so his and his beloved Downy's ghosts saw their kids off together from his bedroom window.

Downy passed away a few years earlier, and Fergus passed (unbeknownst to his kids) the night before Scrooge, Matilda and Hortense left for Duckburg in 1898. On the subject of Carl Barks and Don Rosa, though: they're both going to be name-dropped at different points in DuckTales 2017. Hope you catch it!

Also Scrooge's Parents names are Downy and Fergus McDuck and Donald Duck's mom was named Hortense so basically Donald's last name is Duck he got it from his dad, which means Scrooge's parents are Donald Duck's maternal grandparents and also Della's as well so Scrooge's parents are Huey, Dewey and Louie's great-grandparents and their mom's grandparents! Interesting right? Also Dirty Dingus Mcduck was Scrooge's paternal grandfather, Donald and Della's great-grandfather and Huey, Dewey and Louie's great-great-grandfather!

The story of Scrouge getting his number one dime with his dad's help is shown in the comics. Of course, he never knew that his dad helped him. The legend of the treasure of castle McDuck is one of my favorite arcs in the Scrouge McDuck comics. I call it "arc" because this mystery spans multiple comics. The one where Scrooge finally found it is my favorite comic book. This is my favorite episode because it has the most references to the comics. Of course, there are some changes. For starters, the hell hound in the comics was a trick used by the McDuck's enemy clan to scare them of their land and steal the treasure. Secondly, there are no mists hiding the castle. Also, Scrooge's parents died, but his father managed to get the closest to finding the treasure and in some comics they are seen with the other spirits living in the castle.
@honesto46963 ай бұрын
I loved how Fergus' assistance to young Scrooge, parallels the help given by the Clan McDuck ghosts to the triplets. I suppose it's a McDuck tradition, to have the more senior members, build up the confidence of the younger ones, by secretly providing them a challenge and then letting the children believe that they conquered it on their own.

@@honesto4696 You just made me remember something. In the comics, when Scrouge was young he met the ghost of one of his ansestors (the one who was entrusted to guard the treasure) without knowing he was a ghost. Also, Donald has the military rank of sergeant and received an official discharge from the U.S. armed forces in 1984. (However, which branch he served in varies according to time and place. During WWII he was in the army, but during Ducktales 1987 he was away on deployment in the navy, which is why the triplets went to stay with Scrooge in that series.

Old Fogey time: this episode has a number of call backs to the Curse of Castle McDuck episode from the 1990s Ducktales caqrtoon, it was also oddly one of those episodes put into those random VHS episode collections. In that episode it was revealed the McDuck family had fled their castle and lived in cottages in the country side because the castle was haunted by a glowing giant dog (a Hound of the Baskervilles reference). However Scrooge's parents weren't alive and it was revealed that Scrooge's ancestors had been as thrifty as he is an built the castle around a stone circle, the main lobby clearly having the stones visible. So the local druids had used glowing flea powder on generations of dogs to Scooby Doo people away from the area with their fake ghost and continued to use the castle as a worship site. This episode ended on a weird note with the druids agreeing to turn the castle into a tourist trap during the days and worship there at night.

There's actually a mistake in this episode. It's not a spoiler (real or fake), just a thing where, if you think about the family tree, it doesn't line up. Scrooge introduces "Donald" as his parents' grand-nephew, but if you think about how the family relations should work, you'd realize that he should have said that Donald was their grandson instead. (I don't recall if it ever comes up again, and if it does it's not that significant, so it's more a trivia thing than anything else.)

The music notes spelled bag. The dates aren't Americanized. America kept the system that was in use in the 1800's while Europe changed, probably because we didn't have to interact with each other as often since there was an entire ocean between us. If this was written by a Scottish person from 200 years ago it would be month/day/year.

I had to come back to this episodes common thread to see if someone noticed a very small detail with the dates on the letter. Even though the last part was cut off, given that the nephew's are 10 years old turning 11, it should read April 15th 2007. And since this is about a week, it's a guess that they hatched around April 20th to the 22nd. Making Huey Dewey and Louie the Aries/Taurus cusp sign. The Cusp of Power. Not surprising. I've noticed recently that Disney has had a trend for making characters that are Cusp signs.

Donald is a McDuck on his mother Hortense's side (Scrooge's sister), but he is a Duck on his father Quackmore's side. The McDucks have a longer and more preistegous family history, while the Ducks are mainly hillbillies. Hillbillies are low-class Scots-Irish people (a group comprised of Northern English, Lowland Scottish, and North Ireish protestants) who settled in the rural Appalatian mountains of America in the 1700s. This is why the McDucks tend to look down on Donald and other members of the Duck line.

For anybody who have fun with this show i really recommend The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck comic books by Don Rosa. One of the reasons why i love this show so much is because they clearly took a lot of inspirations from this comic, but also they twist some elements in new interesting ways (for example, Scrooge and his father never really had a talk like this in the comic so Scrooge never learns where his dime really comes from). And in general, whole thing is beautifully drawn and its both incredibly funny and heartfelt (also, Donald's mother appears in some stories, and she is absolutely awasome)
