Rhett, it was an honor to talk about an amp that is super important and something, honestly, that I really needed to get my job done as a session guitarist. Great video, and still a great sounding Amp in 2023.... thank you Michael for inventing it:)

I have heard some great things about Soldono amps, but if we're going to be historically correct, ALL of the LA session players were going to Paul Rivera for mods of their Fender amps and then his own amplifiers long before Soldono. He is a giant and I'm not sure why his amps seem to get overlooked. They cover all of the tones one could ever need...a tone tweaker's dream.

Part of what made soldano amps so loved is Mike himself. Back around 2000, I acquired an early slo100. I was living in Hawaii, and I called Soldano because I had a question about the amp. I don't even remember what the question was. Mike looked up the serial number and realized my amp was from before he added the effects loop. He offered to add it for free if I paid shipping. I didn't even ask for it. I didn't know it was an option. That's service. He went above and beyond. Best experience I've ever had on a service call. He is just beyond cool. Mike, we love and respect you, brother. Thanks for sharing your new find, Rhett. These amps deserve all the love.

Fantastic service. I've owned numerous Soldano amps throughout the years and called them many times. Mike and Bill Sundt typically helped me with any questions I had, even regarding used amps I had bought. I don't have any experience with anyone else from the company but those two were so helpful and friendly. Every amp I've owned from them was smokin in their own rights.

In October of 1985 Mike brought that “breadboard” prototype amp over to test on my 1982 Marshall anniversary cabs for a comparison here in Seattle. I was a typical 80’s metal player into the high gain but also played clean, but with celestions the clarity of his amp was not noticeable at first. I used my iceman with PAFs and Mike was really excited about what he was hearing from his amp, so much that he said right then “he’s going to relocate to Cali and pursue building an amp while working at Stars Guitars in S.F. He completed making my Soldano double neck which was his last guitar and went full on in the amp biz. I’m so happy for Mike’s success cuz he’s a really great guy and friend of high quality, just like everything he creates!🤘💜

So when Micheal S was developing this amp at the time he was my cousins guitarist stage tech and had Modded his Marshall’s at the time. We did a show together and I asked him to Mod my XB100 and he laughed at me and said there’s literally nothing I could do to that amp and make it sound any better. Saw at NAMM in 2019 and he remembered telling me that back in 1987.

I purchased an SLO 100 last year. No regrets! You did a great job Rhett covering the various tonality of the amp, showing that it's not just a hard rock or metal amp. One of the other amazing things about the 100 is that you really don't have to crank the master volume to get a great sound, but if you do, it remains tight and focused. Shout out to Mr. Pierce, always great hearing from him.

I met Mike in the mid ‘80s when he had a little shop in Hollywood. I brought my Boogie Mark 3 over to compare to his amp. He was very friendly and accommodating. I dialed in his amp for a while and we A/Bed it with my Boogie. I liked his, but as I recall I concluded it could sound very similar to the Boogie (which I loved). Anyway, I didn’t buy his, but it was a good experience. Over the years, I was happy to see his success.

Rhett……I came back here after a year just to rewatch this again. I want to thank you for NOT using WAYYYY too much gain with this amp (which not only makes it sound terrible) but demo’s doing that are an epidemic on KZbin. This amp “lives” in “Super-crunch” mode, and nothing on the planet sounds like it. Neddi Stanz get’s an absolutely SPECTACULAR SLO tone when demo’ing (actually doing a comparison), using the Synergy SLO module, for anyone interested. (Just search “Neddi Stanz Synergy SLO vs JMP-1”….which he get’s a great tone from, as well). Anyway, very well done, video.

That SLO30 sounds VERY good too. I owned both, and the only time you heard the difference was side-by-side. I didn’t need a 100w amp, so I went with the 30. Anyone who thinks the 30 doesn’t have the signature sound, watch a video from a guy by the name of “Cragginshred”. He gives a clinic on how to get the SLO signature plexi, hard-rock sound, this amp was designed around.

I bought the SLO30 and returned it the same day I got it. I dont mind spending money on quality, but it was built like a 12 hear old chinese kid put it together with cheap, chinese parts. The sound was alright, but it wasnt my real SLO 100!

@@equalleftrights3130 Yup. That’s not the first time B.A.D has put out a product like that. I think that company has gotten too big for Dave to handle, and he’s hiring sh!t tradesman to solder these boards. At the price they’re charging that thing had better look PRISTINE. If you have already have a true SLO (built by Mike) I’d just stick with it, and pickup a Fryette if you need it at a lower volume. Mine sounded killer, but I didn’t look inside either. I traded it for two amps I needed more at the time. But, I’m sure I’ll have another if an original pops up, or a used one in good shape comes available at a good price. Nothing on the planet sounds like that, other than maybe a Splawn Quickrod (one of the amps I traded mine for). Sorry you had a bad experience, but not surprising. I’m having weird issues with my Friedman Little Sister like that, where the plexi cracked for no apparent reason I(first time that’s EVER happened on an amp with a plexi faceplate like that). Dave sent me a replacement for free…but, still.

Love to hear the studio guys talk about the history of all this stuff..that rack era is so inspiring as a guitarist, the Wild West of tone chasing..so cool!! As a millennial I’m so jealous..those 80s multi channel rack preamps capture the essence of what’s so great about guitar, super crystalline cleans - the purity of the instrument in parallel to destructive ear piercing high gain..perfection! Great content Rhett, keep it up! I entered into the sweepstakes, im super interested in that amps course too - hopefully this era will be another 80s style guitar renaissance!

Psst! Don't tell anyone, but the Astroverb and Atomic are based on the SLO's Crunch channel. Here's an email reply I got from Bill Sundt in 2002: "The reverb-o-sonic and the astroverb are both based on the 'normal' channel circuit of the SLO. The SLO has a clean/crunch switch for this channel. The reverb-o-sonic's two channels are basically these two, clean and crunch. The astroverb is basically the crunch channel. Neither has the super high gain overdrive circuit. The HR50+ has the overdrive and the crunch. All of these respond very well to backing off the guitar volume knob to clean up the sound. The lucky 13 has the soldano overdrive channel and a fender style clean channel. bill sundt"

As far as I'm concerned, this is still the king of high gain. Chuck a modern OD with it and go modern. Add a little booster for fat rock and blues tones. Dial it back for juicy crunch. Add some reverb and delay for a smooth, thick, glorious lead sound. Or simply have all that gain and tone straight up with nothing in front. This amp is it.

That burly and compressed high gain sound that he gets out of the SLO 100 is as much a part of the band as his playing is.

Knopfler's best tone to date was through the SLO100 and EMGs. And, if I'm not mistaken, the SLO100 and his 58 Les Paul in late 90's. Both clean and distorted.

I think any video on the history or impact of this amp has to include a whole section for Warren Haynes. He is the most prolific user of the amp and for sure the longest. Even Dickey Betts played them for a while because of WH. You could do a whole video with WH on just that. It also leads to the natural question. It's not like these are artifacts. They make them today. Why aren't there more people playing them considering the reverence the guitar world has for Mike Soldano? That could be a whole video too.

I still own a Yamaha T-100, the predecessor of the SLO-100. Mike Soldano built it for Yamaha. It is basically a SLO-100 with reverb.

Way back in the 90s I had my amp shop next to a G.C. I'm on the sidewalk and a G.C. employee said there goes Mike Soldano . So , I walk up to him and say Your the tube guy , and Mike says I try to be . Very humble . Then he comes into my shop and talks amps, guitars and music for a good half hour . He'a good man . P.S. Mike , your friend , Jay came in with you . She's my neighbor .

I appreciate Rhett showcasing a different side of the amp. So often The SLO gets a HH super strat and 8O’s hair metal riffs put through it…nice to hear a different vibe and guitars.

Pretty sure I saw Tommy Katona of Texas Flood playing through a SLO 100. Didn’t know what this amp was capable of until seeing this video. Thanks for sharing Rhett!

I played a Yamaha T-100 during my heyday/band days (flowerhead) which is a Soldano designed amplifier from the early 90's. I never had a distortion/overdrive pedal in front of it, just never needed it. Granted this is not an SLO, I was on a budget for sure, but still the the Soldano DNA is in there. I loved it, and still have it. Still love it, and passing it down to my son to continue using it. Anyone else with memories of the Yamaha version of the Soldano amp?

If memory serves, Steven Fryette was starting to produce the VHT line of amps at about the same time. While Soldanos were far more popular, those VHT amps(Fryette now builds amps under his own name) were also some of the very first "boutique" amps. They are also excellent. Matchless was also contemporary with Soldano. Another important point about Soldanos was that they were a way to get powerfully distorted leads without "load boxes". Cheers, Alan Tomlinson

Not quite the same time - Soldano was 3 or 4 years earlier. For example, Mike started Soldano Custom Amplification in 1986, while Steven started VHT Amplification in 1989; the SLO 100 came out in 1987, while the 2150 power amp came out in 1991.

Rhett, I’ve watched this video so many times but the one thing that I wish you would have shown was the head setup. All the knobs are turned all the way down and I would love to see if there is a baseline of setting to use as a starting point. I love your channel, keep up the great work!

The Yamaha T series designed by Mike are excellent as well. Made in Thomaston, Georgia. I spotted a T-50 rack head with a badly bent panel at GC for $200. I fired it up through a cheapo cab and drew a small crowd. Gorgeous cleans in the green, excellent reverb, and not a bad gain setting throughout the range on the red channel or from the guitar's volume knob. This thing wide open just got more chewy without losing definition. A pair of NOS GE 6L6s were just the thing to put everything else I had (Boogie, Kitty Hawk, Music Man) to shame. One of the few amps I still have.

Great video brother! The best one I've seen about this amazing amp! Thanks! I just found a key part of the tone I'm looking for! I'll be buying one! However, for now, I'm buying the 30 watts version, for woodshed and small venues gigs. Rock on!
