In 1930, Alfred Rouse, a British salesman, staged a murder to cover up his personal troubles. To escape financial debt and avoid his lover's demands, he devised a plan to fake his own death. Rouse picked up an unidentified hitchhiker, rendered him unconscious, and left him in his car. He then set the vehicle ablaze, hoping authorities would believe the charred body was his. However, Rouse’s plan unraveled due to witnesses who saw him fleeing the scene. The burned body was never identified, and Rouse was quickly apprehended. Despite his pleas of innocence, he was convicted of murder and hanged in 1931. The true identity of Rouse’s victim remains unknown, adding a mysterious element to the case.
