Got to respect Mo-Fan a lot here. After everything he’s put up with from being laughed at to a corrupt teacher attempting to foil his test to even those close to him (childhood friends and school faculty) saying that he should quit on the day of the match. He never let his temper get the better of him. If I was in his place, I’d gladly give everyone a good scare and NOT pull my punches on anyone. Wouldn’t care if I’d go too far on those who thought I was a joke.

This was why he did badly for magic lessons in class as he did not have any prior knowledge, and he had no "stars" Edit: yes I remembered.. stars have nothing to do with studying..

Also, in the novels it is explained, that you don't get stars because of studying itself, just that, while studying if you have a good understanding of things and a picture of how things work, you can end up having a control over the first star (since they say they are like living beings and it respects you for all your effort and recognizes your talent, so it is obedient) of the seven when you actually awaken your element. And even that is not that frequent, so it usually stands for someone with a very good talent, hence Mu Bai was considered number one in class, but Mo Fan wasn't exposed to all that knowledge, since he just got to that world recently, hence no star, even though he did have the talent. That's why when he did start practising he was better than Mu Bai, and if people who had one element had 1 hour a day to cultivate, he with 2 elements had 2 hours, but it was totally up to him how he will allocate it. Well we know he opted for full lighting, then full fire.

This is one of my favourite novels, I watched the anime, read the manga and read the novel 3 times which has 3100+ chapters. The story is immersive, everything is so well explained and detailed that when they are commenting about situations you immediately know what that entails and what effects it can have in that world. You can come to a conclusion like you also live in that world, rather than the auther having to explain. It is considered slow starter, and it just gets better as you watch/read so i highly recommend. The only thing i can find faulty in this series is that there is a factor of luck involved often, and whenever it was needed he somehow had it, just lucked out, for getting some items for example, or just lucked out that the beast he killed had one of the stronger types of the soul, or of all the things he could have gotten, he got exactly what he needed. But still, it mostly has a logic that you can follow, and good cause and effect, so it doesn't bother me if he lucks out here and there. And let's be honest, most novels that get manga/anime adaptations end up getting some changes in the story, it doesn't stay the same as original, but this was aparently deemed written good enough to not need any changes for either adaptation. I think his eye colour is a thing that changed. Spoiler He is basically god mode at the end, but he it takes a loooot of time to get there, and he constantly gets recognized along the way for his growth and for constantly breaking his limits. I always get taken out of the story for the stupidest reasons like when they keep saying this is not scientific even tho they are a society that doesn't believe in science etc it's all about magic. The first few chapters in the novel make fun of the MC because he keeps saying stuff like isn't this supposed to be math or history class. it's a small thing but it takes me out of the story.
