Rivaldo is so criminally underrated, because he wasn't as marketable as R9 (Nike), Zizou (Addidas) and Ronaldinho (Nike), but his peak imo was every bit as high as at least Zizou's and Dinho's.

I watched them all, and Rivaldo was every bit as good as Zidane, Dinho and R9, it's just about preference. Rivaldo was other-worldly, the stuff he did defied logic almost. Rivaldo was introverted, not charismatic and private, so he wasn't as marketed.

Imho Triple R (R9, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho) is far and away the greatest front 3 any national team ever fielded.

You are so right that the appreciation of the Ballon d'Or has gone down due to the monopoly that Messi and Ronaldo have had even in years where others should have won. In that era even though you had R9, Zidane and Ronaldinho others still won the award such as Figo, Michael Owen, Nedved and Shevchenko. Even though Zidane and R9 and eventually Ronaldinho were the best even in years they didn't win other players were rewarded for having outstanding seasons. I feel that for a few of the years players like Ribery, Lewandowski and van Dijk should have won over Messi and Ronaldo. Messi and Ronaldo clearly deserved most of the ones they got as Real Madrid and Barcelona straight dominated everything and they were the main reasons why. Ronaldo should have one less as Ribery should have won in 2013 and Messi should have two less as Van Dijk and Lewandowski should have won on 2019 and 2021 respectively.

I was watching Rivaldo as a kid in his prime. In one season not sure if it was 99 or 00, he was the best player in the world by far, he was toying with everyone.

6:38 - That goal was even more special because the winner of that game between Barca and Valencia would qualify for the Champions League. It's was 3-3 I think going into the last minutes and Rivaldo sealed his hat trick with that overhead kick. Magical

He went to deportivo before barca snatched him up. The 2002 Brazil side was incredible, in attack at least. The goal around 6.32 was even more incredible as I think that's the one that got them into the champions league and it was a late winner too in the last game of the season.

It was the third goal. In an unbelievable hatrick, in the 89th minute, with the score at 2-2 to seal champions League qualification, on the last day of the season. They used to give the balloon dor to the world's best player. Now they give it to who has won the most.
