A masterpiece it is not. It's very average, simple, simple chords, very straightforward. I'm not saying it's bad. It definitely sounded good on the album when I used to listen to it alongside the other songs. But it's definitely not one of their best.

I used to have way too many hard back books, I donated most to the Humane Society for fund raising yard sales, but I kept The Hobbit and the trilogy, total masterpieces of literature. Most of my books are now on Kindle, sure saves space and I can carry a library in my pocket. I first read them in the very early 70's. I like the Zep's Misty Mountain shout out to The Hobbit also :) Brilliant song writing.

Led Zeppelin has a few different sounds, and everybody has favorites and not-so-favorites. Like some prefer the bluesy ones and others prefer the acoustic ones. This is one of the songs, BTW, that reference "The Lord of the Rings." Which is funny for a rock song. Kinda nerdy. But if you guys haven't seen "The Lord of the Rings," you can always cover it on your movie channel. It's fantasy, but a top quality trilogy based on a famous story. And while it isn't an allegory, the story is based upon the author's real experiences as a soldier in WW1, coupled with his work as a historian and linguist, studying the oldest works of English and Nordic writing. So it's fantasy, but rooted in some ways in reality, and in very old storytelling.

Actually, back in the late 60's, hippies were getting into books like Lord of the Rings, Zeppelin had quite a few songs with LOTR & fantasy fiction references (The Battle of Evermore, Stairway To Heaven, even a live version of Bron-Y-Aur Stomp where Plant calls out the name of his dog (Strider) at the end). T. Rex was loaded with LOTR & fantasy stuff, as well as Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath's "The Wizard", much of Dio's music, lot of prog rock bands, Rush (Rivendell), many Iron Maiden songs can be (and probably have been) used for school book reports. Metal & rock band members are huge nerds, despite whatever they might be wearing.

You spelled “In My Time of Dying” wrong. Love “Fool In The Rain”, but it being a pretty straightforward samba, I don’t think it really showcases Led Zep’s amazing powerhouse flex or much innovation.. though it is a truly great song. It was indeed more radio friendly, but often the more rocking tunes don’t get that industry push for a pop hit.

That’s interesting. Zeppelin is my favorite band and this is one of their bests. The story is about a guy from Middle Earth from the Lord of the Rings books. More suggestions (and if you already did some of these I apologize for missing or not remembering them) “Achilles Last Stand.” It’s both hard and beautiful. Every thing is A-game in this song, everything from John Bonham, who seriously plays circles around Jimmy Page in this-I am exxadurating (how the heck is that spelled?!) of course, that’s how the song was meant to be, it’s just that it really showcases John’s skills as a drummer. I mean there was Keith Moon, him and like two other guys on Earth that could do that stuff back then. Also, you should check out “Heartbreaker,” oh and Amber might enjoy “Moby Dick,” because it’s an instrumental and John really shines in that one too. “What is and What Should Never Be” is just a bleeping awesome song that rings true to the Zeppelin sound. I know you probably think “Stairway to Heaven” was their prettiest ballad and it might be, but if you haven’t, check out “Thank You.” It’s a real treasure and I believe it’s John Paul Jones that plays the harpsichord in that one. Could be wrong though. “The Lemon Song” and “Custard Pie” are brilliant dirty blues hard rockin’ songs that just taste so true and authentic to Zeppelin…I think you’ll like them. They are unrestrained and horny! Lol. For something a little different you can check out “Bron-Y-Aur Stomp” or “The Battle of Evermore.” “No Quarter” is a little different too, but very powerful. “The Crunge” is another one I get a kick out of. Other good ones are “Trampled Underfoot,” “Ten Years Gone,” “Down by the Seaside,” “The Wonton Song,” “Sick Again,” “Celebration Day,” “The Rain Song,” “Misty Mountain Hop,” “In the Evening,” “Fool in the Rain” and “Hot Dog.”

Listening to individual songs from LZ2 will leave you disjointed with the experience. The Album is meant to be heard from beginning to end, it really matters what came before, and what comes after. Like many Masterpiece Compilations from that time, it's a complete experience. When the Musicians are giving you 9 Masterpieces, you listen in order. This isn't some top 40 Pop Band, or One Hit Wonder, with 1 or 2 songs that are catchy, this is LED ZEPPELIN, each song is there by design, in order, meant to capture your entire attention. Aside from headphones, if you listen to this on a Vintage Yamaha system, or others from the time, with 4 high quality speakers turned up to 8, "the neighbors won't mind" or who cares, you will find this is an experience like you have not experienced before. in 1974 when I was 12 I was blessed having an older brother with such a high end system, WOW, WOW, WOW!!!! Disclaimer: Of course if you play music loud, in a populated area, you might end up going to jail, or have your house raided, or both, so proceed with caution. Times have changed!

I agree with the speaker analogy. Got a couple 12 inch mid 70's JBL-L100's myself. Headphones are nice sometimes, but it's definitely not the same experience as blasting it through some big ass, quality speakers. 👍😁

Back in the day, you could catch that panning listening on speakers. And back in the day, speaker technology was nowhere near where is is today. Of course, listening on even half-way adequate headphones gets you to where you can hear the little nuances like Bonham's off-beat beats and Page's exquisite guitar work hidden behind the out-front shredding track... Love the way it starts out smooth, light and silky, then BAM! What the...? Oh, that's right, it IS Led Zeppelin. I could see Amber getting right into the deeper places in the groove - know what you are feeling, girl. This is one of my favourites.
