Super helpful! I've been using a chair for almost 2 years now and I love going to concerts. In Canada, it's a bit of hit or miss, since we don't have legislation like the ADA. Some places are fantastic (and often let a "helper" in for free), while others act like they've never seen a person in a wheelchair before. There is one popular venue that is not really accessible, but they let you in early so you can try to find a spot where you won't be staring at asses all night. Downside to concerts in Toronto: many don't have accessible washrooms so I always hit up a coffee shop beforehand. If there is any doubt, I use a combination of google maps, the venue website and calling. A lot of small venues here don't post the relevant info on their site.

Hi, I'm an L5-S1 incomplete paraplegic nearing my 5 year anniversary. I learned to walk again and face the same judgements you speak of in regards to fluctuating abilities/mobility aids. I absolutely love what you are doing with your channel! When I was in rehab my favourite band was playing and I was GOING! My doctors and nurses didn't think I could do it as I had only been taught to catheterise that morning. Well. I told them my friend would hold the mirror if she had to but I was going 😂 I got clearance and didn't get back until 4am! I had no idea how I was going to do it but i found out I could go in the delivery entrance to avoid the front steps and I had the night of my life! Thank you! I can't wait to see what else you have in store.

FYI here in My state and country, Victoria Australia, wheelchair users get a card that allows their companion to attend the event for free. I love having this card. This applies to concerts, plays, stand up comics, the movies, sporting events, etc...

Jason Reynolds oh man that’s amazing! I wish we had that here in the states. I can’t tell you how many extra tickets I have purchased for my companions. There are plenty of times I even buy two tickets up front not even knowing who I was going to bring with me.

The medical profession has a lot to answer for in respect to the way they load negative messaging onto a form of transport - namely the wheelchair. When I was growing up in the 70s-80s, there was an unspoken but prevalent attitude: "Walking - good, wheelchair - bad". It was as though you had "given up" if you used a wheelchair. I didn't use one full time until I was sixteen and left school for Further Education college. Our house was too small to accommodate a wheelchair inside, so I used crutches. It led to me now experiencing daily pain in my elbows and shoulders in my early Fifties.

Man, while I don't have a disability, that tip about the gloves is amazing ! If you want a way to 'market' this to people with wheelchairs, etc. Maybe call it: "the best seat in the house", because as you I've noticed a lot of the times where a venue creates the space is usually pretty darn good (not always, but many times if not most of the time). ;-)

Its so reassuring that life can be 'normal' again and there are ways to make it all work. Omg! The coincidence! I've been watching your video's in my journey from abled bodied, now using a rollator and learning about life in a wheelchair because thats where I'm heading towards. Guess what? The first concert I took my trusty Rollator with me was BabyMetal last December!!! Wanting to keep going to concerts and festivals has been my biggest motivator to embracing mobility aids. Thanks for all you show and teach us! And rock on! 🦊

Awesome video, Bro! Such a good job mapping out the process of what to do and how so others can go and enjoy a show that may not go due to the hassles. Went to the Houston show and BM are fantastic! Not disabled myself, but a very bad lower back has it's own difficulties, especially standing for hours on end in queue and at the rail during the show. I would have given a left nut and the leg to match for a chair! ;o)

Not in a wheelchair myself, but this is great info if I ever have a wheely bro that wants to tag along to a concert. I've been looking at local places to rent a chair for a day to scope out my home and my parents' home for accessibility, keeping it in mind for future DIY work and to try and future proof our forever homes.

Amazing video! I've been using a power chair myself for about 15 years due to MS and just last June my wife suffered a spinal cord injury and is now using one as well. On just SSI I haven't been able to afford any big-name concerts, but I've been going out dancing in my power chair for years at free local live bands. Something I've said to many people over the years is MS may get to control what I am, it gets no say in who I am! (And we're both Babymetal fans!)

So cool! I live in the UK and although music concerts are a little tough for me due to autism, I did manage to go to a london show 2 nights running by public transport with a friend with my chair just 2 months in. It was epic and taught me a lot at the same time. Venue staff tend to be extremely helpful and it is quite cool going back stage and waiting as you tend to be able to catch the warm ups which is an added extra.

I'm a fellow wheelchair user (just commented on your fb, hi!) and do you ever find that "ADA accessible" areas are often not very accessible at all? I go to a ton of concerts as well, and some venues I love and know very well, but others are smaller and older like the one you went to. I've had issues with the ADA Areas actually not being accessible at all! Like people obstructing my view which is my primary complaint. I haaaaate when that happens. Also bathrooms being "accessible"... You know the stalls the wider bigger square ones that are enough to get a wheelchair in but you can't close the door because there is no room to transfer?! Omg I haaaaate it! So freaking annoying. I think it'd be cool for you to make a video (maybe you already have) about bringing awareness to actual accessibility and not just the bare minimum when it comes to ADA standards. I often wish I could go around and tell people that build these areas what is accessible and what isnt, but I have no idea how... Lol! Sorry for the novel, it's just really cool to see someone having to go through the things I deal with every day!
@Wheels2Walking
@Wheels2Walking 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah some ada spaces aren't that great, for example, you get a good view but can't hear, or you can hear but can't see, oh and don't get me started on bathrooms what i hate the most in the H/C stalls that open INWARD so you can't shut it once you're inside. that drives me absolutely effing crazy!
@LacyRakastanTTV

@@Wheels2Walking ahhh exactly! Those are THE worst! It's sad that we have to live in such an inaccessible world, but we do what we gotta do and adapt! I just don't like when there is absolutely nothing you can do and can't easily adapt. Frustrating!

This is such a great video. One of my biggest fears is bathrooms. My transfers are super weak and putting hands on the toilet to transfer seems wrong. Is there a "hack" for pooping in public?
@Wheels2Walking
@Wheels2Walking 5 жыл бұрын
Hmmm i usually leave my pooping for home but in emergency situations i can manage a public stall. i don't think there is anything wrong with grabbing onto whatever you can some places might have those railings, you can also use a seat if it isn't all wobbly or covered in piss 😭some toilet paper could also help. Don't forget about taking some gloves with you like i mentioned in the video. that has saved my ass a bunch of times 👍🏻

@@Wheels2Walking Yeah i definitely need to upgrade my fanny back for outdoor adventures. I usually wear fingerless gloves to help brake the wheels on hills and stuff. If i get a powered chair, that's gonna Definitely change everything, hopefully for the better!
@Wheels2Walking
@Wheels2Walking 5 жыл бұрын
Dozzer yeah man you really gotta find what works for you. I know I have a separate bag I take with me on more active adventures or concerts for example. The trick is taking what you need and maybe a little extra but not too much stuff. I remember taking an entire backpack filled with “just Incase” items for the first year or so I was in the chair. Not I take small bags with just the right amount of stuff 👌🏻

Everything in this video is wrong. When your in a wheelchair you get treated like everyone else and if you don’t then you would. No there isn’t some special entrance into where the concert is. It’s called a ramp where everyone else goes in. Use it. You will get searched like everybody else. No one knows what you have on you or in your bag even if you called ahead and said this is what I need they will still check everything even if your allowed to bring it in
