(He is not padded up or even wearing boots; all he has on are keg shoes and bells to protect his heel bulbs. :) Also, WE DON'T RACE OUR HORSES. We don't even show them. First of all, we don't like getting involved in the politics that inevitably exist in every industry when people are competing. Secondly, we don't like the trends we have seen occur in pretty much every breed which are detrimental to the horses. Thirdly, we simply don't have time! We are busy raising our 10 kids and enjoying our horses in the mountains & deserts, riding for fun in the great outdoors all year long! Our horses have to have the athletic ability to scale mountains and follow the elk, the gait and endurance to do it smoothly for hours on end through all types of terrain and types of ground, and the mind to do it safely and soundly (or I'd never trust them with the wife and kids!).
Our purpose for breeding Cat is to introduce more speed in the gait into our stock. However, we will NEVER compromise temperament (or the horse's health) for speed. It is far more important to us that our horses and the horses we produce are calm, level headed and enjoyable to ride on the trails. If we can ad more speed to the glide ride while we're out covering country, then awesome! It is also important to us that our horses can gait smoothly and naturally at all speeds. This is all what impresses us about Bad Cat. I have had people in the speed industry tell me that he is unique to his kind, in that he can go fast without it causing him to be hot, spooky or antsy to go all the time. He is totally natural in his gait. He has natural hoof length, angles and normal shoeing. In the video he is wearing bell boots on the front to protect his fetlocks, they aren't weighted, padded or anything like that. Cat doesn't have a competitive personality either, and doesn't care if he gets left behind by other horses taking off ahead of him. This probably wouldn't make him hot in the racing industry.. but it sure does make for a FANTASTIC trail animal who can do it all!

I'm not very familiar with racking horses or gaited in general, even though one of my horses is a SSP, but you are SO awesome for keeping the horses happiness and best interest paramount, instead of going for wicked fast and wicked horses! Have you bred him yet??

Honestly, please don't take this as criticism, you have to do what makes sense for your circumstances but really - why would you ever geld this horse? If all you say about him is true he BELONGS in the gene pool. Can you find another sweet horse for the timid rider and keep this guy making good babies? I would love to see racking horses compete in Endurance and Competitive trail ( and would love to have one) but can't do it with horses that need toe weights, etc.
