@dragracer3 EGR Cooler failure does pressurize the system. The primary difference is that Head Gasket failure will NOT have large clouds of white coolant smelling vapor coming out of the tailpipe. BUT more than 50% of the EGR cooler failures will be back needing head gasket bulletproofing within 3-6 months due to the stress of overheating during the EGR cooler failure. It depends on how hot the engine gets.

I have been using the factory gaskets, because they include the stand pipes. I use ARP studs.

@Built4ford It is an easy question with a complicated answer. No load in a truck with all systems running properly, mild/ stock tune 80F day with AC on Engine Coolant Pressure should be around 6-8 psi. With a load and long grade expect 12-13. BUT it is important to understand that there should be no pressure spikes or go over 16 psi for an extended period. These are the situations that EDAS is designed to detect, so the operator can back off the throttle BEFORE something expensive gets damaged.

@redsheila67 I agree the so called 100,000 mile coolant has the inhibitor package precipitate out of the solution as particulates and clogs the oil cooler. This happens due to the extreme heat from the EGR cooler. No question that flushing coolant every 30,000 miles will save alot of heartache and pain with the 6.0.
@powerstrokehelp
@powerstrokehelp 12 жыл бұрын
The rule is if you have coolant coming out in clouds out of the tail pipe than it is an EGR cooler. If it is just pressurizing the coolant system and pushing past the cap then it is a head gasket.

That is why Bill is the powerstroke master. I have learned somuch his video's If I had a serious powerstoke engine problem his shop woulld be the first place I would go. Even though I live 1000 miles away from his shop. And I here in central Iowa. Not exactly a trip down the street. But that is the respect I have for his knowledge.

@6LiterPowerStrokin Most folks who have the 6.0 ARE happy. Probably 80% are happy. You cant ignore the maintenance on a 6.0 like you can on a 7.3. I have a truck in the shop now. A one owner 03 F450 (9/02 build date) that is getting a new motor because it was burning oil. It worked hard everyday of its life 492,000 miles and never needed any work. No injectors, no oil cooler, no egr cooler nothing just ford fuel and oil filters every 5000 miles and fuel additive.

i have watch a few of these videos and not once have i seen anybody doing these tell the people what causes this concern to happen (blown head gaskets or a failed egr cooler).i have been a ford teck for 10 years and i'm telling you now,if you DO NOT replace your oil cooler (where it all starts from) you'll be doing all this repairs again. one of the most important services to perform on a 6.0 and a 6.4 is to KEEP the coolant systm flushed.

@MrJakediesel The number one reason for head gasket failure is performance tuning and a heavy foot. Going fast ALWAYS costs money no matter what the vehicle is. I got a neighbor that has $10,000 in a lawnmower that he races. Silly but true.
@powerstrokehelp
@powerstrokehelp 14 жыл бұрын
@nickishrawrxx the cold start-no power issue is more than likely another injector issue. BUT the coolant loss is a big concern. First thing get a new coolant cap and eliminate that as the possible leakage point. EDAS would help identify a head gasket or EGR cooler failure while pulling. As far as the noise I'd have to drive the truck to figure that out....Bill

@Built4ford A new heavy duty coolant cap is included with the EDAS just for this reason.
@powerstrokehelp
@powerstrokehelp 13 жыл бұрын
@fordpowerstroke2012 You can run it for short periods, even drive it. Just leave the coolant cap loose to release pressure. And make sure there is plenty of coolant in the jug. No Towing or hot rodding it will hurt the engine more.

@FMXUnleashed Your engine has had most of the updates but not all. The fact is that most of my customers have had this exact type of service out of their ford diesels. Only when the engine starts consuming oil would I worry about refreshing it.

We would have made it worth your while to bring it to us. I have lots of very happy 6.0 customers all over the map. The 6.0 Powerstroke is a wonderful truck, powerful, smooth but it is difficult to find a shop that will shoot straight with you. They are either crooked, incompetent or make promises that they cant keep.

@mjsti Yes, in fact it can be applied to all piston driven or truck engines with a bolt on cylinder head. Wont worn on something like the Mazda rotary engine or obviously and air cooled engine like an old VW. But yes anything with a cooling system.

Yes you need to drive the truck with the gauge on. 16psi is not enough to push the coolant back into the combustion chamber.

Have a 05 6.0 with straight pipe and blue spring. Driving on the freeway with no load wrench light came on and went into limp mode. I pulled off freeway and truck stalled when I came to a stop but started right back up with no more wrench light. Pulled into a gas station and the opened the hood and it had puked outta the degas bottle. Topped off coolant (just below stock MIN line) and took it easy the rest of the way home and no more coolant loss or puking

Id really have too see it to be sure but it sounds like the head gaskets are bad. If you plan to let it sit for a long time then you want to fog the motor. Go to a marine supply and ask for two cans of fogging spray. You want to spray this in the intake until you see a light mist coming out of the tail pipe then turn it off. This will lube up all the internals including the turbo. Use left over spray to spray in the tail pipe and cover the exhaust with a plastic bag. This will save your motor.

Hi. Thank you very much for the great information. I recently purchased a 2005 6.0 with 93,000 miles. I can tell that it has been apart at least at the egr cooler, so I assumed that everything was done before I bought the truck. I decided to do this test for the head gaskets anyway to put myself at ease. My question is, how fast should pressure build in a properly functioning engine? It seems that mine builds quite fast without pushing the engine hard at all. Thank you for any info.

So I’m very new to Diesels but I’ve noticed my 6.0 smokes on start up and it fairly sluggish but I rev it a couple times and it’s ready to go and the only problem I’ve ever had with it is some high pressure oil stuff. I am getting ready to reseal the entire high pressure system and bullet proof kit (stand pipes,dummy plugs, injector seals, nipples and seals, stc fitting, oil cooler, egr, fuel pressure regulator) and I’m wondering if I should spring the extra cash and do head gaskets and studs as well and if so if I should have my heads shaved in the process. I’ve noticed I can leave my truck for days and still have pressure in my coolant tank which leads me to believe I don’t have any leaks what do you guys think?

Bill, 06 6.0 39,0000 miles on it, i have a 0-20 psi gauge T'd in to the degas bottle just like your kit and it sits at between 8-10 psi if i have it on there from a cold start all the way to operating temp with a load on the motor. if the truck is already at 130 degrees or higher and i install the gauge, the psi sits at around 4-6psi with a load on the motor. is this within acceptable ranges? no loss of coolant ever... Love the videos Keep up the good work!

@ROSASBROS Yes it sounds like you have an EGR cooler problem but your head gaskets have probably been compromised too. Most folks come to my shop with EGR cooler failure are back in a few weeks needing head gaskets. I recommend doing the full bulletproofing and be done with it all. While you have it apart the oil cooler is cheap insurance. If you would like PowerStroke Specialty to do the work with a year guarantee, please call 770-931-4070. We have performed several hundred 6.0L bulletproofs

Bill I need some help on figuring out what's going on with my 05 powerstroke at operating temp the coolant psi runs 13-14 and stays there steady (gauge has been on for 3 weeks) i tow 8k daily and I can floor it and it won't climb up past that. No loss of coolant or puking of any kind. When I let the truck cool the psi will go down to 2 psi and say I let the truck idle all the way to operating temp (190 is where she likes to run) the gauge will be 13 by the time it's warm and I haven't even driven it yet. If I drive it it's the same deal at 190 then it's 13psi. The cap is holding at 17-18 psi before it blows or i pressure tested it egr is deleted with new uppipes and everything ik my oil cooler is slightly plugged it runs about 16 degrees different but I installed two auxiliary cooler using the same method a filter bypass is installed and brought it down to 4 degrees different. Any explanation on why my pressure is so high would be appreciated. Oh and I did a combustion leak tester and it proved negative for co2. And yes ik I need to change out my oil cooler for chance of rupturing it's only has 2000 miles on it, I flushed it all out and put a coolant filter on before the new one and it still clogged the owner before me wasn't good on coolant maintenance, but I am waiting for my friend to get a lift and them I'm planning on bullet proofing with a set of biggdogg heads and everything anyway in a couple months. Truck has 180000 miles with stock tty bolts 😐

Ok. Thanks Bill. No smoke from exhaust, just pushing past the cap. Are you still having good luck with the black onyx gaskets and studs? Or should I just go with factory Ford gaskets and ARP's? Thanks again. For better diagnosis, I have the pressure guage plumbed into the degas bottle, and after warm up, it gets to around 5psi. But once I get onto it, it jumps fairly quickly to 16-17 psi and blows out the coolant. Most likely head gaskets, but I figured I would tell you about it just in case.

However, pulling any kind of hill, with no load, any ambient temp. causes the pressure to hit 16psi. Otherwise, just cruising at hwy speed, pressure is 8-10. What to do?

+Cheryl Granger Have you checked your Coolant reservoir cap? If there is no pressure at all, then that could be faulty.

Hey Bill, does that sound that the 6.0 makes when you really romp on it mean a head gasket failure? Because we have a 2006 6.0 and it makes that sound a lot. Please Reply.

Is there any way to tell if the upgraded studs and gaskets have been installed? I am looking at a truck that the seller claims has them done, but no receipts. I don't know diesels that well, it runs great but I don't wont the headache.
