Agreed. But testosterone and adrenaline coupled with youth and inexperience are a dangerous mix. This is why so much violent crime tends to be committed by young men.

@@Edmund_Mallory_Hardgrove You are definitely not wrong at all. However... "Jesse" was at least two years older as well as the more accomplished and more experienced fighter (to say nothing about how much bigger & stronger he was)... ...so I am all the more disgusted with "Jesse"... ...being that I would have expected more out of him because he was older and more experienced and what he did was certainly excessive and completely unnecessary and uncalled for. Said another way... I don't think what "Jesse" did to Jackson was a result of "inexperience"... ...and probably had alot more to do with "Jesse" using that as an opportunity to look like a tough guy at Crawford's expense... ...especially since there was a large crowd in attendance. Which makes it all the more despicable.

I have a brain injury that caused me to become someone different. Memory loss, and people coming up to me who say they've known me for 20 years and I have no idea who they are. I moved away and relocated to Memphis Tennessee, where no one knows me. I became tired of people that knew me before this happened and would ask me who I was because I'm no longer like that person they used to know. I've been alone in this and hearing your story lets me know that someone else has dealt with something and got through it. Thank you.

Kudos for telling this story, Jackson. It's pretty obvious it's a hard one to tell. I was a victim of bullying myself back in high school, but not with any lasting effect. What I do say though is: the experience of having gone through this stays with you for a long time. It usually shapes your mind more than your body, but, as your story shows, sometimes that as well. I find two things in your story that are worth telling it over and over again: one is - don't ever give up. live serves you hard knocks (very literally, in your case) and you will fall at times. Always get back up, never let a bully make you question your own value and the path you chose for yourself. That will mean you have to go through a hard time in your youth, possibly ridiculed by those who don't understand your choices, but if you persist, you will find calmer waters and people that do. the other one is: boys, physical violence is not a game. It's not entertainment, it's not fun it's plain violence. If you feel you have to be "the best fighter at school" find yourself a boxing school, or, better yet, a karate school. There, you'll learn a lot more than just the punches. There's a reason why almost every martial art comes with a large set of behavioural rules. It will turn a boy who wants to be the strongest into a man who knows how to be strong without having to prove it. thank you for telling this story and congratulations for having achieved what you have! Greetings from Germany pj

Brain trauma is a very stressful and hard thing to work through and recover from. I had a couple of very bad falls from horses as a teenager, one time the concussion was so bad I was blind in the ER for 5 hours. They didn't know if my sight would ever come back. It did, but I suffered terrible migraines for years, debilitating depression, and a difficult time retaining information I read in a book. This ended my DVM college path, and made my passion of artistic painting no longer pleasurable. I'm so glad you are doing better now!

Yes, the background noise of constant pain soaks up some of the cognitive bandwidth that could otherwise be applied to more productive uses. Also, if IQ is measured during a migraine and compared to the same person’s IQ without migraine, the migraine score is fairly dramatically lower. (Though I can’t imagine taking an IQ test while having a migraine). So, likely you really are smarter. This whole story evokes my ‘Mom, taking care of you’ response

You tell a great story! Glad you’re getting the medical support you need. This is horrifying though - how easy it is to die and how ignorant we all are about our health. I actually did fall down the stairs some years ago, didn’t get any medical help - and now there’s so much food I can’t eat because I’m allergic or intolerant of it - because I injured my stomach. You just have no idea at the time how badly hurt you are, and just find out later when the consequences arrive. All good health to you, Dr. Crawford - and thank you for your excellent channel.

School yard fights don't leave a person with a serious injury & life long life threatening medical condition. You were in fact assaulted, the fight was over as soon as you were incapacitated. That is one hell of story to drop. "you're dying" are certainly not words you want to hear said whether they're paired with anything else or not. I enjoyed some of your descriptions of the events, as you're obviously good-humored about some of this, but it's terrible what you've gone through, especially the ragr demonstrated by "Jesse" in kicking you while you were down, and it amazes me that you've been able to do all the things you have despite your condition. I had a life changing head injury ten years ago, it took fifteen months for the initial headache to finally die down (it was severe, constant, and involved sensitivity to light and difficulty concentrating). After this I thought I was back to normal because I felt normal, but I soon found that even small impacts would cause a resumption of symptoms and send me back to the dark room. Today the sensitivity has progressed to the point that I can't travel in cars because the vibrations from the seat are enough to bring back the symptoms, I can't run because the impact of running on my brain (the impact or bouncing/movement I guess) causes it. I can't even power walk, I have to walk slowly and carefully. I even sleep in a bathroom on a layout bed with a neck brace keeping my head raised so that the vibrations from people walking in the rooms above don't cause the headache... I haven't given up because I know I've got more to give, but if anybody sees this and knows anything that could be done, please get in touch. (Recent MRI and X-ray came up clear)

When you started talking about your family, you reminded me of my Dad. He split most of his childhood and young adulthood between Colorado and Wyoming, and most my ancestors on his side were gun-slinging cowboys too. Late in life, I'm studying Norwegian (family history connection) and found your YT through that. Didn't expect a video on head injuries info; thank you for sharing. I've had multiple TBI-including a 5" skull fracture, several knock out blows, including several bike crashes with knock outs, broken helmets, broken bones. No health care provider ever mentioned TBI yet I lived with about 18 problems, including a speech problem whose only known cause is TBI, and a continuous headache for 32 years, until diagnosed at age 58. My care for those injuries was horrible. Unbelievable it was missed all those years. You have all the sympathy I can muster!

Thank you so much for sharing this story! I work at an ER and we get a lot of young men who have done things that maybe weren't very smart. It's nice to hear the story from the perspective of the patient and to be reminded that (most of the time) their lives don't end when they leave the ER but that some of them will have to live with the consequences for a very long time. Happy to hear that you are feeling better now and it's wonderful to hear that you're feeling smarter (it's probably true, electrolyte imbalances can really mess things up) - we will be expecting even more brilliant videos from you from now on... Interesting that you felt the need to point out that there's nothing wrong with your testosterone levels 😂

IdaCecilia Vesterlund So true. I have had many patients in the ED with chronic low blood sodium (old folks) and a few with more-recent onset low blood sodium (post-head injury, generally), and it definitely causes mental abilities to deteriorate. I experienced hyponatremia myself during basic training. It was 7 hours into training in the Texas heat, wearing a chemical-protective suit, where we had water but no “Gatorade” to drink. I kept “whining” to the training sergeant that I felt very sick, and he kept telling me to drink half a canteen of water. (In his defense, this was 30 years ago, and no one knew any better back then.) Unfortunately, I obeyed his orders, with predictable results: I fainted dead away, was revived with cold water poured all over me and taken to the ED by ambulance. My memory of it is patchy, but I looked at my records later, and I had a blood sodium of 123 mg/dL. At least I learnt that I need to take in more salt during the summer!

So many men are so reluctant to go see a doctor when they are sick. “I just thought I was weak.” I am making a broad generalization, I know, but my own adult son did something very similar. Thank you for sharing. In October of 2018 my former partner beat me so badly that I sustained a closed head injury. My scan showed nothing concerning, but I have been in and out of the neurologist's office for some of the very strange changes. My sense of smell has changed. That's an odd one. I do live with a persistent headache. So many of the things you describe ring true for me. What is also interesting, is that your Old Norse books led me to your KZbin lessons. I have trouble retaining the information, but the hobby has given me something positive on which to focus. It's been part of my recovery from the PTSD. I wasn't going to watch this particular video because it didn't have anything to do with Old Norse, but while I was watering my plants it auto-played. I ended up sitting down to listen with my coffee. I bet you can't drink coffee! Anyway, happy healing and thank you for your public presence.

Hi Doc, I love your work, your videos and your calm and gentle vibes. I brought your book, it's amazing🙂 I wondered, that with my hungarian I can actually read very easy in constructed old norse pronunciation and it sounds like old hungarian a little bit. My husband spent his teenage years in an area where the fights between teen boys (and also girls) were usual, but it was a rule, that do not kick the one already lying on the ground. This is a fundamental rule of streetfight. As you described Jessie was an experienced fighter, so he should know how to stop. He owes you for the demage he coused you. If I were you, I would sue him. Thank you for your amazing channel and books! All the best for you from Hungary 🙂

Respect for sharing your story, it was interesting to hear and I learned a lot, so thank you for that! Also I understand that your condition changed your life in a major way and it sucks but when you said you were kicked in the head repeatedly all I could think about was "fucking hell, Jackson is lucky to be alive..." Not even going to talk about the US healthcare system, it's terrible that when told to go to ER your first thought was "I can't afford to pay for that"... as a European, I was appalled! Keep up the good work, this channel is great and always super informative :)

I haven’t ever been diagnosed with D.I., but I do have other digestive issues that are similarly disruptive. I wanted to thank you for being open and sharing about your struggles. Frequent need for restrooms are easy to make light of, but it can be a real hindrance and severely impact lifestyle, as you described. That’s it, just wanted to say I can relate and much respect to you.

I’m glad to hear you’ve maintained discernment over your own well-being and it sounds like you’ll continue to do so moving forward. Thank you for your perseverance and the paths you did choose, for whatever excuse you’ll give it. Studying Old Norse has been a crucial part of this portion in my current path on life - it appears many, many others too. Your gifts, whether forged from trauma and then persistence and tenacity or any other way you phrase it, you are truly valued and appreciated. Thank you for all of your works, and thank you for your story, such things are always good for the soul. Peace and protection your way. Tathastu.

I am so glad you got all of this straightened out and you are getting consistent management now. I'm also glad you don't get seizures. You lucked in that way.

I live with chronic pain from an accident. Like your 20 years of headaches, we learn to deal with the constant pain, it takes part of our concentration that is done in the background to keep the pain at bay so we may get on with things. On days where my pain is less, I am more quick of mind and smarter as there is more brain function available. This is not to say that getting the sodium levels under control were not a very good thing that contributed to your increase in clarity but a thought on how the body deals with constant pain. I wish you well moving forward, glad you have a team to help manage things.

Doctors think I have a tumor or lesion on my pituitary gland, too! I've never met someone else with pituitary issues before. All sorts of hormones stuff going on as well, although I don't have the whole "every fifteen minutes" thing going on (mine is more like a bunch of other hormones out of whack). I don't envy you, my friend. I take replacement hormones to try to offset it all, but they still haven't located the specific area of the suspected lesion yet. My doc says it's probably still too small to show up on the CT scans. We can't do an MRI because I've got bits of metal floating around in my bloodstream (due to an unrelated, medical zebra sort of thing that is an entirely different comment thread) and getting an MRI would kill me thanks to the whole "metal tearing through my body like I'm fighting Magneto and losing" thing. I'm so glad you've been able to find out what's actually going on with you, and that you are able to get the help you need for that. Also, I had a cerebral/spinal headache once thanks to a botched spinal tap, and I don't envy you that, either. I remember begging someone to shoot me and put me out of my misery, at one point! The ER didn't see me for six hours.... So imagine me just laying there sprawled across seats, sobbing, while everyone else just traipses on through, and meanwhile I want to throw myself in front of an ambulance and end it all but I can't stand up- ugh! Miserable. Your video has helped me, though. We've been struggling for years to see what's wrong with me specifically, and it's been so frustrating. Thank you for being vulnerable with us and sharing your story.

Oh my... While there are certainly plenty of times that I enjoy Schadenfreude, this was not one of them. First off, I'm so glad that you're finally feeling right and normal. Everyone deserves that. I've had my own medical issues (nothing quite so dramatic), and I know how powerful that feeling of being at 100% for the first time in forever is. I'm happy for you and thankful. I'm also impressed and/or dumbfounded that you managed to power through that level of condition for almost two decades. Beyond that, this video was almost startling in its openness and how you're putting yourself out there. You have my respect, as well as my concern for your well being. Please take care of yourself, and hopefully, I might get a chance to meet you at a book signing or something some day.

OMG! Honey, I am a 60 y/o heathen woman who loves mediaeval history and the epic sagas. I live in northern California. I am an old hippie lady who enjoys the Hel out of your KZbin videos. You are approximately the same age as my son. He has had psychological issues and personality changes since falling into a oil changing pit in 2015. I want to thank you for sharing your very personal story with us. I am so sorry you got beat so bad and have had to suffer these terrible consequences. I have the deepest respect for you for your academic accomplishments but more so, now, for your strength and courage to battle your health issues and that you persisted to succeed in attaining a Ph.D. You are an exceptional young man. Please, please, take care of your self...I will have you in my thoughts and prayers... You are a brave, gifted and talented man. I pray that you get your meds worked out and achieve a better quality of life. Please know you are loved! Your presentations give many great joy. I wish I had had a professor of your quality when I was in school. I am really glad Stella was there for you to take you to the hospital and that you did not perish from the hyponatremia. I knew an OB doctor who lost her practice and license due to the mental outcomes of hyponatremia. Please be kind and take better care of yourself. Men die trying to tough these out...Please listen to your body and head its messages...We don't want to lose you.
