This might sound ridiculous, but I find it so refreshing hearing a metal guitar tone tuned to standard... don't get me wrong, I enjoy some low ish tunings, but something sounds extra pissed off about good old E or thereabouts. Cheers big man

The red channel unboosted is my favorite part of these amps. Raise the mids a bit and lower the bass with gain about noon. Compressed with a lot of sustain for leads but you keep the dynamics that can get lost with a boost on the blue channel

The 6l6 has a little more raspy old school sound to my ear. The stealth is a bit tighter but the 6l6 just has that Strachey sound I really like that make the chugs have that train moment sound. Just my opinion. I’m 52 and I like that dirty sound that not so round. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I have been told that you can’t compare amps/pedals by putting the pots in the same settings because there’s lots of variability between individual pots. The better way to compare is to adjust the knobs to get them as close sounding at possible.

Not sure if you know both are 6L6. The white one is spec'd to Ed's studio sound of late, the stealth is the same amp but tuned to Ed's touring spec. The Gold EL34 is voiced to be the classic marshall of the early VH albums. They all use the same preamp tubes and except for the gold model, the same power amp tubes. The difference is in the voicing they programed into it.

Great demo! I actually slightly preferred the 6l6 on the blue; that slightly more "classic Marshall" sound is really nice to my ears. Have you tried raising the treble slightly more on the 6l6 red and lowering the presence a bit? In theory, this should cut some low-mids out while not reducing the top end much if you get the balance right.
@Mumumumykul
@Mumumumykul 2 жыл бұрын
the original 6L6 just has such a classic tone to it. the mids are so dynamic and, like you said, sound almost marshall-y when the gain's dialed low enough. kind of reminds me more of the original block letter 5150's that we all know and love with how dynamic it is. maybe its the mesa fan in me but i'm going to say the stealth has too much high end, it kind of hurts my head, lol. theres just so much bite that there was already plenty enough of to begin with. i've played two different stealth heads in different guitar centers and found myself turning them off to try something else a bit more quickly than i'd hoped. luckily one store had the el34 5150, which might be the best high gain amp i've ever played

I have the 50 watt 6L6 and love it. I think the only difference between these two is that the stealth has a little more distortion on the blue channel than the other. Pretty sure that's what the EVH guy said in a video where he was demoing it. They just look for anything to make a new model to put out and charge more money for it. They basically changed the look a little, changed the name, and may or may not put more gain on the blue channel. I think they recently raised the price on these amps too.
@belligerentamateur

No sir, they're voiced slightly different. More differences than just the amount of gain on both the red and blue channels.
@manicmurph
@manicmurph 3 жыл бұрын
@@belligerentamateur Right on. I've never played the stealth personally but that's what I've always heard is that it has more gain. I think the regular 6l6 red channel has almost enough gain for anyone that likes a ton of gain. For the price and features you can't go wrong with an EVH 50 watt. You can get a peavey 6505 100 watt for a 1,000 bucks I think too. That's a pretty good deal. After hearing how loud the 50 watt is though, I can't imagine any situation where you'd need 100 watts. Unless your playing a huge stadium or something.

@@manicmurph the 100w has a lot more low end and headroom. Not like the 50w isn’t loud enough. I hear its extremely loud for the wattage. But I can’t really judge, I only have the 100w stealth. Just what I heard.

I have the Stealth because it was available when I was ready to buy but if I'd had the 6l6 first I don't think there's enough difference to justify it. A eq in the loop could get them damn near identical I think. The 6L6 is a badass amp also. Edit.. well shit, Kyle just said the same thing lol

Great video. No one should believe the delusional shills on music forums who proclaim the 6L6 and Stealth are "essentiall the same". Until you've owned a 6L6, you won't hear the differences between these. But Kyle you nailed it at: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mKe0qYeun5aknaM The low mids in the 6L6 are round and congested. There just isn't a way to effectively dial them out from the amp. IMO, it sounds a bit fat and plasticky. They fixed this somewhat in the Stealth and it sounds more modern. The 6L6 may be a better rock amp, but for metal get the Stealth.

What would be your choice if only playing in room no drummer or band. 6l6 50w, Stealth 50w, or lbx stealth?

Hey Kyle great vids!! Can you tell me which evh 5153 has the bigger bottom end between the 34 and the stealth? I’m a mess guy and I’m wondering which of these two amps is closer to the big bottom end of the mark V or the rectifier

Just came home from playing a 6L6 50w vs a PRS MT15 and gotta say I preferred the MT15. Maybe I’d like the EVH better with a boost and eq in the loop but straight up the MT15 sounds a bit better and is a great bargain.

I think you forgot to edit the text in the lower right corner cuz you keep changing the head but it says stealth the whole time. Kinda confusing

Update: I have the original 6L6 now….easily one of the best amps I have ever owned. I closed my eyes and every time I heard what I liked I opened my eyes and you were playing the 6L6. Congested is not the right word for that amp. I’d say more rounded and organic. Or saturated. 6L6 wins for me.

Exactly! Although, I wonder if you boost the Resonance and the bass a smidge on the stealth, you're right there..?

The red channels on these amps feel so compressed but they record very similarly to the blue channel, just not very dynamic at all.

Only difference o truly notice is the 6l6 seems to be more opened up sounding saturated and the stealth is more compressed and articulate. But its so slight. I'm sure in person they're totally different

Im looking at these 2 amps on the EVH website and they are showing the 5150 III & The bottom amp which is the 5150 6l6 amp. The front panel colors are not the same for this amp. the 5150 6l6 has a white face. And the 5150 is all black. Can comment of the bottom amp that you were testing? And that one is the better amp also?

Cool vid, man! Hey, is the Stealth louder than the 6L6? Wondering about a 50 watt amp being able to keep up volume-wise when there's only a vocal p.a. in the club.

U can Bias the tubes with a meter. U don't have to pay a Amp Shop to do it, or disassemble your amp if U can do it yourself. That is worth the price difference to me, plus it is Nasty.

It took me to the end of the video to understand you weren't on the Stealth like 90% of the time. LOL I was multitasking and just kept seeing 6L6 Stealth in the corner, thinking that meant you were playing the Stealth. 🤔🤣 But watching the second time I learned a lot. One suggestion... go back and forth twice, not just once. It's easier to hear the difference instead of having to back up the video to hear it again.

I had a terrible experience on a Backstage 15 and a mixing board in the late 80's and never looked back at Peavy. A friend dropped off his 5150 6L6 to have me sell it, and I plugged it in to see why he was selling it, and I could not believe my ears. I'm hardcore ENGL, and the 5150iii 6L6 sounds just like my Powerball. The cleans are awesome, the gain is searing, and subtle on the low end if you want to replicate some classic tones. Those 6L6's are pure magic.
