When the iconic was announced, my first thought was 'nope, not interested in a cheaper version of what won't live up to what we already got with the previous EVH/Peavey 5150/6505 amps..' After hearing this, I'll happily admit that my reservations were unfounded and I'll happily try out a 5150 iconic in the future if the opportunity arises. Thanks Kyle and great demo!

My local shop got one maybe the day after the initial evh video dropped. We took it out of the box and plugged it into one of the 5150-3 2x12 cabs and I thought it sounded pretty good. I like the gate and though like most on board reverb, the reverb isn't that great, it's still a nice addition. If I didn't have a pile of amps already I would consider grabbing one. Hell, I still might.

Hey Kyle FWIW, James himself said the on-board boost/burn is supposed to do the opposite of tighten the amp lol. Its supposed to actually make it fatter and more saturated., closer to an original 5150/6505. That way you can try to get that 5152/5153 tightness with it off and 5150 fatness with it on. ...Also can't wait for people to say it still sounds like a solid state amp lol

Great demo! Best one I've heard so far! Based on your demos only, I think I still prefer the 6505 II, tone wise. It sounded fuller to my ears but it's not taking away the sounds of this one, especially with its price tag! I want to know though how much the 6505 II will be. The only real criticism I have with the Iconic is that it would've been cool that the overdrive, burn and reverb were footswitchable.

I’ve had my Iconic for 3 days and this amp is amazing! I’m not trying to dial it in to sound like Eddie. The amp is very versatile and there no need to dial in a lot of gain to get a great lead sound on channel 2. I use a beautiful clean sound on channel 1. The boost works fabulous! I run a line out of the preamp out to a Boss ME70 into a JCM900 into Orange cabs. That way all my effects have a volume pedal so I can blend in modulation/delay effects into the Marshall while keeping the Iconic rock solid with a little bit of reverb. I love the reverb on the Iconic! Anyway, create your own sound with this amp, don’t try to make it sound predictable. The Iconic amp gives you everything you need to blaze into future guitar sounds…

Kyle, I wanna kiss you on your bony cheek. After getting a voicemail from the Sweetwater rep that it would very likely not be until February or March before they would start getting actual retail inventory and not just filling preorders, I managed to snag an Iconic from off of Reverb two days ago. I noticed an influx of listings being added, I saw one listed by a local Ken Stanton Music store in a town about 30 miles from here, asked 'em if it was actually inventory or if they were trying to take preorders on promised shipments, and when they told me it was the one and only one they received, I ordered it right then and there and picked it up that evening. I have yet to watch the entire review, but regardless of the opinions you end up having, you made me happy enough just taking a big fat shit on the armchair warlords protecting some weird fucking tone-warrior code that protects the idiotic and backwards mantras of so many know-it-alls in music and gear culture. I fucking think this amp is worth every penny of the 953$ I am paying off and then some. This thing has the sound that made me fall in love with my old 6505+ and that is just the basic gist, and it it finally healed and closed the self inflicted and gaping wound left by my stupidity the day i sold my 6505+. The Iconic, has redeemed me. It is a monster amp that riffs, chugs, and is brutal enough to rip the throats from the naysayers as they talk their shit.

Block letter is the same exact amp as a script or USA made 6505. Peavey and Brown himself have commented that the USA made Sylvania 6L6 tubes (which ran out of stock around the change to script logo) is what made 'em sound better. You can still find a good testing NOS set, if you're willing to spend the cash that is.

I think it sounds sick. Like most people I was on the fence on what to expect from the iconic series, but it seems to deliver quite well. Like you said very tight. It still has that signature 6505/5150 gritty gain tone to it that just makes it sound so nasty. I'm digging it. Something still feels uncomfortable in a purely egotistical way knowing that it's not a full tube section but I can live with it. I might pick one of these up instead of a triple xxx soon.

@FulcrumsEdge
@FulcrumsEdge 2 жыл бұрын
all tube power sections and tube preamp with transister cascaded gain-staging (which by the way most editions of the JCM900 also had) makes this 5150 about 99 times more tube/valve circuit than the "valvestate", which can be described as being more in the arena of Marshall's early attempts at emulating tube tone in an otherwise purely solid state circuit. id wager most modern digital amp modelers sound better at emulating tube dynamics than the valvestate. I like the Valvestate, it has its own uses for certain tones, and is not a bad amp by any stretch, but to compare the 5150 Iconic, to a peavey-ised version of the Valvestate just honestly doesn't even really make sense or hold any real validity as a basis whether or not you should spend your money on it. Not that you can actually find Peavey VTM's these days. If you manage to see a listing for one, it won't likely be in any condition other than beat the fuck up, and probably still won't be listed for anything close to the Iconic's sticker price.

The best review yet! To paraphrase...It highlights the "resonance, and the presenance!" ;-) I've said it before...James Brown wouldn't put his name on something crappy. The hybridizing of solid state, and tube tech is really coming into it's own now, and as far as the factory tone that some may find issue with, as time goes on, they'll be tried and true tube swaps that can add more mids, more or less smoothness in the gain etc. The one thing I've heard over and over is the amp as shipped sounds "scooped". The amp ships with an all JJ set of tubes which have long been thought of as a darker or "scooped" sounding tube, especially their 12ax7's. This amp uses solid state in key areas, and most notable, in place of V1 where much of the vintage tube "magic" happens, but the 2 valves it does use are critical to it's harmonics, and toneshaping. Many in metal love this tone, but those that don't may want to experiment with other brands. Much like with the blockletter, (which also got called fizzy, or like a distortion pedal in some circles) which I tried a number of different preamp tube in before settling on a combo of Mullards and vintage Sylvanias, I'm sure there's something out there for them. I may pull the trigger on this amp. My only concern really, is longevity, and quality of build. I'm sure it's all good, but I'll wait until there's some bench vids out there going through the guts before I do. Again....great video.

I’ve owned a block letter 5150 for almost 30 years, and have a 5150 III 50 watt 6L6, so I’m intimately familiar with 5150s. I tried an Iconic at GC a few weeks ago. I prefer the OG and the III, but the Iconic is a STEAL at $900 new.

the noise gate is not a gated noise gate as in it does not mute your sound it’s the same style noise gate that was in the peavey jsx and what it does is lower actual background noise and hiss. for those that love gated noise gates that actually mute your sound at a certain threshold this is not that kind of noise gate.

i think it sounds great! i feel like it has a bit more of that squishy sort of sound the eddie got with his tone compared to the original 5150/6505 amps.

I've really wanted to say that while i haven't bought this amp i'm really enjoying the tones i've heard from it. Idk if it's from the solid state components helping out the preamp section, but it sounds like the audible equivalent of a knife cutting through flesh and it sounds BRUTAL

FYI - Burn switch and Boost are separate functions. Boost works only from the footswitch and the boost knob affects footswitchable boost function, not the burn mode.

Great review. I just bought one. I don't think the boost switch does anything but raise the volume, only when you step on the boost pedal included. It works great for a lead part but it does not effect the tone afaik.
@belligerentamateur
@belligerentamateur 8 ай бұрын
According to James Brown, it boosts both the input gain and volume. There may not be an inherent if you change built into the boost eq change in the boost itself, but of course adding volume and input gain to any preamp will change the way it sounds and reacts, and more input gain will introduce more compression.
@Comprezzed

@@belligerentamateur Here is the text from the user manual. BOOST VOLUME: Footswitchable master volume boost. Set channel volumes first (I), then use this post-effects loop control to set solo volume. Footswitch boosts input gain even when this control is turned fully counterclockwise. Note that BOOST VOLUME is only activated using the included footswitch. YUP It does raise gain, even on ZERO. If you turn it up it also raises volume. It is ONLY activated if the footswitch is connected and engaged. Cool.

I just got to try one of these at a local Guitar Center, and these sound 100x better in person. Mic'ing the cab does not show how good this amp actually is. It has way more low end thump and resonance than a 5150iii and more gain on tap than a 6505. The fizz is still there but it's not as bad in the room vs when you mic it. Not the best 5150 to record with, but a fucking killer amp for jams and gigs. That clean channel is so nice and glassy with a bit of meat, the overdrive/"crunch" has a ton of gain and super tight. The red is okay, really needs a boost but it holds up with other 5150's when you boost it. You really need to try one in person to really hear how good it sounds.

maybe cause it's made in Mexico. few months back, I found out that Mexico uses cheap parts on their amps. seen it on a KZbin video. I also noticed all EVH amp heads are made in Mexico, even the $2599 ones and lower.

It gets so much hate because the amp manufacturers and certain people think price is a main factor. Also because made in China is laughable. Where do we get most of all our resistors, caps, and other electrical parts from… China. I’m a Mesa die Hard fan but I played this Iconic and was blown away. I am buying it tomorrow from GC. Can’t wait.
