I had an Archon 100 for years, best tone I've ever had, and that was after Diezel VH4, Herbert, Hagen and Mesa Dual recto. Sold it to a friend to try KSR (too expensive here in Sweden to keep both at the time). Got the KSR, and it's amazing in it's own right, but I couldn't stop thinking about the Archon, so I sold a custom guitar and bought a brand new one early this year. And that was probably my last chance to get one, since PRS seem to have stopped all production of the 100 since then. Great video as always Kyle!

As usual, awesome video! Excellent comparison video. This proves to me what I’ve always known. And I seem to be much like you are. I have always preferred 50 watt amps as opposed to 100 watt amps of the ones I have owned. I’ve had 50 watt and 100 watt Marshall’s and always swayed toward the 50. Same with the old Peavey VTM’s (60 vs 120). Peavey 5150 (60 over the 120) and now my EVH 5150 iii 50 watt over the 100. A lot of my favorite classic rock and metal players used 50 watters as well. For my style and tone I like, I gravitate towards the 50’s.

Lows mids vs high mids is basically what it comes down to, as you yourself alluded to. The 100 watt is a lot fuller, which is why I tend to like 100 watters more. Without a boost engaged, I preferred the 50, which it's inherently higher mid presence swayed me. When you slapped the TS-9 on though? 100 watt all day. Made the 50 sound puny in comparison. These are nice sounding amps for sure. Video was pretty eye opening cause it's making me rethink 50 vs 100. I feel like if the particular amp you're interested in is notorious for having a crazy woofy low end (rectifier) maybe the 50 watt is a better choice. Conversely, if the amp you're looking at doesn't have as good a reputation at being as full and bodied, 100 is probably the way to go.

Kyle, the Archons sound brighter than I would expect. Did you have the highs or mids dialed up quite a bit? For example, your Engl Savage 120 demo sounded much darker if you compared tones toward the end of each demo/review. Thanks again for doing these for us! :)

If you opened up the power section on the 100, it will bloom more. It is a disservice to the 100 to run it so it matches the 50's level. 100s need space to come to life... let the neighbors complain!

I think many of the differences, in addition to the difference in headroom, come down to the master volume. You would have to turn the volume of the 100W higher to get to the sweet spot. Matching the 100W volume to the 50W rather than the other way around would likely make a huge difference. Correct?

Do you think the 50 has the guts of punch of the 100? Problem I find with many amps is that the 100 watt heads seems to hit harder, punch harder and sound bigger. Thoughts?

THANKS Kyle! You mentioned the 50 watt not having the same low end punch. I saw some reviews with guys saying the 50 having too much low end. Is it more the feel of the lows that you are talking about between the two? Thanks again. :)

Nope, it's the amount of low end in general. This could be due to anything though, maybe the bias on the 50 is set really cold and therefore, it lacks some low end punch. I gotta check it out

Played the 50 and it felt and sounded cheap. Tone was hollow and 1 dimensional always hoped the 100 would be better but not worth the risk

The Archon seemed better as a hard rock amp or prog "metal" amp when I tried it. Not good for saturated, nasty thrash OSDM, etc.

Your master volume on the 100 is much lower maybe 7;30-8 at most.. The 100 come to life at 9-10 on the master. Equal out the master on both. Thats not criticizing just pointing out a major difference,.

Tiny difference that is ultimately insignificant in a full mix I would say. But, on its own, I did also slightly prefer the 50, which is good because I have one and love it! I have no problem getting a low end that punches you in the chest with a cab with G12T-75s and G12K-100s in a x-pattern. I was very disappointed to see that they moved production of the Archon to Indonesia though.
