Headcam orienteering - How to make orienteering video?! Guidance here!

This is a step by step instruction for orienteering community, who willing to make headcam orienteering videos with map and GPS track all syncronized together! Sorry for my average English, hope everything will be understandable. Any questions are welcomed in comments!

Hello. After a whole lot of troubles and effort, and with the help of some guys on the FB page for headcam, I finally got the QR project done, and then completed the OV task. I have an issue though. Someone wrote where you can hand draw in you route into QR. I do not see this option. My need to do this is because I did not start my gps track till the first control. We use pin-punch system, so no electronic logging of control acquisition. So now when playing the OV mp4 it starts me at the first control, and no matter what manual time splits I have tried. I also have an issue with the video time of control punching, and the livelox time. I have seen that some people just use one or two programs to accomplish the same task as these three are needed. I would say I am 95% to the point where I can create a complete video.

Hi! Thanks for sharing your experience. For future, I recommend to start the watch and camera in the moment you start the race, it will give you both track and video almost syncronized from the beginning and it will not require too much work afterwards to create the final video about your race. Or start the camera and watches in advance, track and video files easy to cut later on, that get into the situation, like you have now. @@EvgenyAntipov Hello. Yes I was hoping to do both tasks together...but the camera has been a distraction for the first three events. I will go look up that link. Thanks. I obviously was focusing on getting a video. Now the event last week threw me another curve...i was in the woods much longer than planned due to some dumb errors reading and following a compass heading in dense woods and misinterpreting some terrain features. My battery died on the cam after about 1.5 hours. I had checked it about 2/3 into the event and had 39%. Its a Hero10. I was hoping...and actually on track, to finish in about 1:20-1:30. We tend to have longer events than most places...including 2 hour Score-O's. SO I will have to carry my spare battery, or do what some people have and run a USB cable to a battery pack.

Hi Gabi! I don`t understand what is your question about? The map width you can change in the first tab of OrientView under "relative width" parameter. This parameter range from 0 to 1, so 0.25 means 25% of full screen will be the map width and 75% - video picture.

Hi, First of all great Video :) I just tried to do this all with my run and the program OrientView tells me it can't read my RouteGadget-jpeg file, so there's no live Route on the left side but just a random single point on the map (it's actually the center of the map where the runner's point is). So somehow the program doesn't know where I started? Do you know how to maybe fix it? Could be the reason that my map ist just a photo taken with my smartphone? The quality should be good enough... A response would be great :))

Hi! Have you prepare the file in the Quick Route software? From Route Gadget I never use the files and don't know if Orient View able to read this file or not. Second thing, the Orientview can't read the QuickRoute file with the track more than 1 hour 13 minutes. Try to cut the track below that long and try again. Hope it will help.

Hi. I just downloaded avidemux and tried the first file transfer. Its about a 4gb and the window said it would take 4 minutes to convert...it was processing frames at 108fps. Does that seem correct?

Looks ok, Avidemux working quite fast when you keeping the same output format (mp4 to mp4).

@@EvgenyAntipov I found the cause of my error. I had the files on a portable hard drive and the program was reading and writing to it...once I moved the clips to my laptop it only took a few minutes for the whole process. The encoding rate went up to 600fps. Now that I have a basic video, I was trying to upload it...but I am not sure how long a 20gb file takes to transfer. A web speed test shows I have around 60mbps upload rate. Btw...I have version 2.8, and it does not allow multiple files selection for apending.

Hi, I am also trying to use this to create my first video of a training run. However, I have encountered a problem. After I set up all the parameters and press "play" a new window opens with the title "Video" as it should, but it's completely white. Then it closes after a second or two and the application closes with it. The problem is probably the application crashing, but I don't know why it would crash. I am using default setting and I have even tried using the test data. Nothing seems to be working. Please respond.

Hi. I didn`t face such problem yet, but let`s try to find out what might be the reason. What video file format you are prepared to be used in OrientView? It shuld be .mp4 format. What size of the video file? This might happend if the file sixe is too big. The window which is appeared ofter you press "play" completely white or map at the right side is visible?

The format is .mp4, file size is around 2.3 GB. When video window opens it’s completely white (no map and route) and then the window closes in a second. Then application also closes. Probably crashing

@@Map-n-Compass it looks like something wrong with application on this particular computer, are you using Windows or MAC PC? If possible, try to run the same on another computer to see if the same issue repeats.

That’s exactly where my thinking led me yesterday so I tried it on a very old HP laptop and it worked! Don’t know why it doesn’t work on my main PC

Hello, Evgeny. I am about to do my first video, but I have few problems: After I put everything in Orientview and press Play to preview it - it is starting from somewhere in the middle of the route. Even later going out of the map. When showing the video is also lagging - playing very, very slow. **update** First time I have rotated the map in Quickroute, now i kept it sideways and its alright for now. I will keep you updated

Hi Krasen! It looks like you have to check again and adjust the track on previous step - inside the QuickRoute program. Please verify the track to be align properly with your course on the map from start to finish, double check by split times. The video demonstration in OrientView sometimes might be slow if the video file is too big, but when you encoder the final video it will be with normal speed without any problem.

@@EvgenyAntipov I have alligned the gps track to follow the route with adjust points, but I didn't put any split times in the QuickRoute program.

@@krasennedyalkov7221 is not nesessary to insert the split times in QuickRoute, it just for self check to confirm the track position on the map against the control points. Please also check when you click "export" in QuickRoute you have to save the map as jpeg file with 100% size and 100% quality and later put this saved file location into the OrientView tab "Route". Please also check inside the tab "map" that you are using the same map image file as you added to the QuickRoute when creating "new" project.

@@EvgenyAntipov Thanks for the replies. The main problem is with Quickroute. The gps track is quite accurate and with few adjusting points it fits the map nice. But when I put the mouse where 1st control is, the time on Quickroute is 2:40 where the actual split is 3:08 and so on with the other controls. The difference changes - it is not always 28 sec. How to fix this?

@@krasennedyalkov7221 please double check if you are using the correct track file of this particular race day, I now it`s stupid, but some people mixed up track files. If all correct, verify the split time for fist few controls by video timing. Check how long you have run from start to 1control on the video and later correct the track (drag and strech) inside the QuickRoute according to the real split times from the video. Hope it will help.

Hi Tiago! You have to complete all steps twice: one cycle for first part of the map and another cycle for second part of the map. Later join both parts in Avidemux by usung File/Append option. When you will be working with first map inside QuickRoute you have to cut all track route behind the map changing point, but when you will be working with second map remember to cut the all track route before map changing point. Не вижу разницы, сокращение РС означает "personal computer" и не важно на какой платформе он работает, MAC or Windows. Данное сокращение понимают все - и носители языка и изучавшие его также как и я. Это проверено не раз в общении и с теми и с другими.
