Due to recent discounts on travel in the country, the Boeing 737 is full of passengers. They hit turbulence over the Java Sea, but there are far bigger problems - the jet is hundreds of miles off course and heading into a storm.
What caused the plane to veer hundreds of miles off course?

Mayday: Air Disaster - from Season 7 Episode 7 "Lost in Space": Adam Air Flight #574 (Boeing 737)
January 1, 2007 - After taking off from Indonesia’s Suribaya airport, Adam Air Flight 574 settles in for the two-hour trip to Manado. But somewhere over the Java Sea, the plane hits turbulence, and air traffic controllers notice the aircraft is hundreds of miles off course… and headed for a major storm. The jet’s navigational systems aren’t working. And the bad weather is closing in. The crew struggle to find their way - when suddenly, flight 574 disappears from radar - 102 people are killed. The investigation uncovers shocking problems with Adam Air - and much of the Indonesian airline industry.
Despite numerous attempts, the crew can’t restart their engines. They make a desperate choice - to attempt a landing at sea. Twenty people survive - but fourteen of the 34 passengers are killed. Investigators discover a shocking mistake - that could effect one of the most popular turb-prop passenger planes in the world.
Climb into the cockpit for an experience you won’t soon forget. Using news footage, interviews and gripping reenactments, MAYDAY 7 investigates aviation disasters to find out what went wrong and why.
Now in its seventh season, the series takes viewers on eight more ill-fated flights. Based on cockpit voice recorders, eyewitness accounts, and accident reports, the series expertly recreates the pressure and tension of being in the cabin and the cockpit.
MAYDAY 7 also follows survivors, family members and air crash investigators as they piece together the causes of each disaster. Whether the result of a fire on-board, automated flight systems, pilot error, or manufacturing defects, every accident offers valuable lessons about air travel, that ultimately make flying safer.
MAYDAY 7 takes you to the scene of the crash like no other show. Buckle up for another season of tension-filled flying and surprising scientific investigation.

I have a deathly fear of flying. 12 years ago my friends decided to book a skydiving jump for someone’s birthday. I reluctantly went along. We were 13,000 feet in the air when there was a mechanical failure with the airplane. I was already going to chicken out on the jump but instead was attached to an instructor tandem style (prior to the mechanical failure) .. the plane started to fall from the sky as it stalled, we managed to level out at 6000 feet and without warning my tandem instructor leaped off the plane with me attached to him. I made it to the ground safely along with 2 of my 3 friends. Sadly my best fiend was not strapped to anyone in preparation for the jump and was left alone with the pilot on the plane. It crashed and 3 lives were lost. I will never go near an airplane again. This series gives me serious anxiety but I continue watching for some macabre reason.

If you are in a situation like that, a skyjump plane while strapped to an instructor is probably the best place. I'm sorry that your friend died, but the instructors saved you and your friends. Be thankful you can still stand on this world and remember your good times with your friends.

@@stotgunvsface5092 yes after years of therapy I accepted that notion. I might not be alive had I not been already strapped tandem. I thought it was a bit early to be strapped to him as we did it before takeoff but in the end it saved my life. My friend that was not strapped in had decided not to jump after takeoff and was going to land on the plane. The instructor he was tandem to unhooked his harness on the way up. The small decisions we make in life can have a profound impact. Now I have a 5 year old daughter and life is more than those you lose. Thanks for the kind words from those above

I got the impression that the storm added to the freak out in the cockpit even though they didn’t say that it was the problem at all. I have come to appreciate how dependent the airlines are on communication and very modern computers now. How in the world did they fly from New York to London in the 1940’s?

In third world countries, pilots I think don't get the aeronautical knowledge and skills like we do in the US or the west. I get the feeling watching third world country pilots, that they literally get trained by the airline from zero to airline pilot, and don't have any knowledge of what's going on, it's as if they're just taught to be managers of the autopilot, and freak out if one thing goes wrong, just like a regular job. So fkn pathetic, in the US these r3tards would never even get a private pilot license let alone be airline pilots. What a joke. "Omg my irs is wrong, were gonna crash". Like seriously. You're plane was perfectly fine, you don't even need the fking irs or any autopilot to land at that point, but these arent real pilots, they're just ppl with a managerial job

They always talk about spatial disorientation and pilots may be fooled into thinking they're flying perfectly level because of the way the g forces operate upon them as they bank. Then they immediately cut to a scene back in the cabin and the passengers are tilting wildly, hanging onto their seats and screaming as stuff is cascading down on their heads.

It seriously blows my mind that they allow pilots to be so cut off from the rest of the airplane but they have no idea what's going on in the cabin. Had they had any type of open airway, camera, to the passengers and other crew they would have heard the screaming maybe even shouting and somebody could have told them hey we are rolling. Just like when there was flames and smoke in the cabin on another crash. There should be a way for them to push a button be able to hear or see what's going on in the cabin. A camera? Something

No. With an event like that it all happens too quickly to do anything about until the damage is already done. The engine is effectively toast the moment the first fan blade separates from the hub. It just obliterates the compressor stages behind it and that engine will never run again.

They kno what happened! The pilot was a political activist. One of his friends, high up activist, got arrested. The pilot had a flight simulator in his home & he practiced what he would do. Investigators found it & knew right away. After taking off, The pilot flew to a specific point then circled for 30 min. It was during this time he was negotiating the release of this activist with the passengers of the plane as hostages. They did not meet his demands so he downed the plane thinking it would spark MAJOR unrest & bring media coverage to his cause. But that didnt happen as it was kept quiet for obvious reasons.

I'm not sure if passenger jets have them, but fighters actually do have this. It doesn't tell you if the plane is level with the ground though. It's more intuitive if you consider a pendulum. If you have some decoration that hangs from the mirror in your car, you'll know that it swings to the outside of a turn. A spirit level is subject to the same phenomenon. When the plane turns, the bubble moves to the outside of the turn. But planes can also bank. If you bank the right amount, then your level will show level flight when banking through a turn. This is actually exactly what you want for the most efficient turn. A slip gauge is basically a spirit level that helps the pilot apply the correct rudder input during a turn so that you cant feel the plane is banked at all.

Im suprised the Idonesian government didnt reach out to Malaysia, Australia, Singapore, U.S. and other wealthier nations to raise funds to help with the salvage operations since the airline wasnt willing to help as much as they should have?

@@maecarpenter6735 I think what ronnie was saying is that for those 30 seconds where that were supposed to fly level before turning on auto pilot was impossible due to the storm..

huh? that sounds like a terrible training program. it sounds like everyone got their wings after a 3 month crash course. one guy has a little over a year flying, the other not even that?

The navigation controls were clearly a problem...when pilots have no accurate navigation instruments...YOU GOT A PROBLEM...to put all blame on pilots in bad weather is not fixing the problem...the navigation controls were broke fix the broke plane...more than one plane had a broken navigation problem....

No training, no proper repairs, these are the airlines that you just know when things go wrong will put all the blame on someone else. Likely a very toxic environment where the ones running the establishment think they are better than everyone else. What do they care, they likely do not even fly on their own airlines knowing the risks and if they do travel will take more expensive flights. They do not want to pay for the training they only want to pay for in flight hours. We see it all the time where places pay the bigger money to those who can think of ways to save money and not to those who work the hardest. It is the hardest workers who do not even have time to breathe because those above them are harassing them and putting all the work load on them and constantly telling them what to do and how to do it. They will make remarks like I do not do that anymore and snicker tee hee.

It boggles my mind with what sloppiness aviation mechanics perform their service on machines that rely on safe operations for so many lives!! Not to mention the negligence of the Airline itself, knowing full well that these disasters will come back to bite them in the ass!
