1st boxer was a R1150R rockster if you're interested, not many are...! The first time I was in Switzerland in the 80's the road signs caught me out as well, Blue is for normal roads, Green for motorways. I'd just come from France which is the other way round. I refused a mway toll at the border and said to them I was not using the mways. 2 mins later following the green signs and I was on a mway, oh well, as you say rules are only advisory to bikers...👍 That was another enjoyable video.

I must have been living in Germany too long... I preplanned the route before travelling but have flexibility. Same problem as you finding somewhere to stay around lavigno. In the end I booked AB&B as I wanted to maximise my riding times and could not be bothered with a tent. Are you using Calimoto? Should add that I really enjoy your content!

I always wing it when touring abroad but I never tour during high season. Took the boat down to Santander in June this year and I'm so glad I didn't book as I managed to miss all the rain by going to Pamplona and the Pyrenees first and then doubling back to Potes and the Picos. If necessary I would have gone to Valencia and tour the Sierras there if that's where the good weather was. In the past I've turned it into a couple of city breaks because of bad weather by heading south, down to Salamanca and then Seville.

When I ride for several days and have my camping gear along I never know quite where I am going to sleep because I ride until it gets late because in my case I am doing 'hard arse training'. This last summer twice I slept for free on my air matt on top of picnic tables in a couple of rest stops in BC and on the third night I lucked out and managed to secure the last one of two available picnic tables and 'sort of places' to put up my tent in the overflow camping parking lot of one of the large full up campgrounds in Peter Laugheed Provincial Park in Alberta. I also slept on the table because putting up a tent in the dark was not an option for me on such a sketchy place so I slept a third night on top of a picnic table. As for food, I pack produce, bread, hard sausage and cheese in my high side pannier with two steel water bottles which I fill with ice from the free dispenser at a McDonald's. If I want a coffee, I either make an instant or buy one at an A&W. A few times I'll stay a few days camping in a location and never book ahead. Sometimes I have to ride and ride until it becomes night to find a place to sleep. I always manage to find somewhere to pitch a tent or catch some winks in a rest stop; these are not bathrooms, albeit they are provided, a rest stop in BC or Alberta means a place where there are toilets, yes, but also picnic tables and likely a nice view, as well. Some rest stops still have complete cook shacks with a large wood stove in the middle and four picnic tables so a group can cook and shelter from rain, if needed. Oh, btw, the third picnic table in the provincial park cost me $31.00 CDN. Like you, I try to ride as cheaply as possible. Unlike some KZbinrs who can stay in five star resorts and eat Michelin meals, we are more humble folk. I like the fact you guys show everyone what riding and camping is all about; not all strawberries and cream. Riding a motorcycle, hard core means, you ride in all kinds of weather and 'bite the bullet' when necessary. If life is boring, get a motorcycle and go camping. Thanks again for another entertaining post. Watching you two is far more entertaining and interesting than watching some malarky out of Hollyweird. (sic). Ride safe you guys.

Bloody vignettes. 4 of us were touring on 4 bikes in 1997, we didn’t stop to get one, winged it. My Honda firestorm had an incident, my tent became detached from the rear rack and got caught between the swingarm and the back tyre. Massive lock up at 80 or 90 mph on the Swiss autoroute. Big black skid mark all the way to the hard shoulder? Anyway, my tent poles damaged a coach and we exchanged insurance details (I was covered) the Swiss police turned up and a policeman walked over and saluted us. We then all were issued with a penalty fine for not having a carnet? Vignette? After the paperwork from the policeman he took a step back and saluted again. That was it. No injuries. Good result really…..I purchase a new tent in Austria.

What brand is your mattress Rich? If Thermorest they have a life time warranty. Just take it to any outdoor outlet that stocks them and get a replacement. I think it might be a seam that is leaking as you can't find a hole. Also don't leave a mattress inflated inside a hot tent as the glue softens and then it delaminates and you get those huge bulges that people claim is a fault which isn't. It's user error. I use to work for an outdoor retailer many years ago. If all else fails buy a new one from Decathlon. They do a full length solid folding foam Forclaz one, their own brand, for 17€. I have got one. It's good. I use it underneath my Themarest Neo Air XL to give it more protection from sharp pointy things when lying on it. Also it's more insulation if the ground is cold. Decathlon also do full length air mattresses for about 30-40€ iirc. Your shopping disaster has meant no meal time highlight. Hope your food position improves tomorrow if not, one of you might be eying up the other if you get too hungry. Still you wouldn't need to buy a new mattress .............. Btw I have found Google maps is very good at avoiding toll roads. Was excellent in Spain and France. ATB.
@ontheroadadventure5 ай бұрын
Maybe this is what’s happened as we have had some mega heat although it’s not left in the tent in the day as we pack up and move on each day. It is the thermarest but I understand you have to send them the mat off for them to repair? I have now been to decathlon and bought a cheap mat for now, will be interesting to see how it compares to our good ones.
@alexmorgan34355 ай бұрын
@@ontheroadadventure Glad you have got a replacement mattress to sleep on as sleeping on the ground is not fun or having to get up several times in the night to reinflate it must be a nightmare. I would recommend solid foam mattresses under neath and also under the ground sheet of the tent to give it added protection to stop punctures as if you have heavy rain and there are holes in the ground sheet then all your stuff could get wet. As I say I have one of Decathlon's Forclaz folding foam ones 17€ and it's pretty good even sleeping on it without putting my Thermarest on top. You can take your leaking Thermarest mattress to any Thermarest stockist and they send would it away so proably best wait until you are back in the UK. 99.9% of the time Thermarest will just provide or authorise a new replacement or if urgent they can authorise the shop you have take it to, to give you a new one from their stock if they have one and then Themarest credits the shop. Well this is what we did at Cotswold Outdoor when I worked for them a few years ago. Even if the person returning the mattress hadn't bought it from us. I dunno maybe better hang onto it until you return to the UK if you now have a replacement but if you do come across an outdoor shop that stocks Thermarest it's worth a try to get a new one. They might want to see proof of purchase though and maybe language barriers come into play. If you had bought that mattress to me I would have made sure you got a replacement as I did all the warranty returns. Some people you could tell were taking the piss and had really abused their mattresses, stains as well, yuk, but you clearly haven't. But Thermarest do have a life time warranty on their mattresses for the original owner ie if you bought it new. Hope you get it sorted.

The first time my mate and I toured the area we were stopped in Austria for speeding, at which time we were found also not to have a vignette. We were fined 30 euros for speeding but 70 euros for no vignette! Ironically the fine covered us for the duration of our stay, so we didn’t then have to buy vignettes. However, we were warned to ensure that we bought a vignette if we were going to use Swiss motorways: the equivalent fine in Switzerland (we were told) was 2000 euros!

What you had there was the Swiss equivalent to UK Dual-Carriageway. The A roads are written on Blue backgrounds and the really sexy twisty bits have white backgrounds, talking of twistys, where was that Camping spot you shared with the Slugs, I might wanna use that myself? Now then, why do you have Cablecars and the like, to go up mountains.... IN SWITZERLAND? to carry Skiiers up the slopes in Winter! You'll find the odd Bakery open on a Sunday morning, but that's about it, unless you go to a bigger pertrol station and pay above prices for food. Listening to you talking about Slugs with your dinner made me chuckle..., yeah, the guy who was afraid of a tin of lentils with sausauges lol !! Where you stopped for the "free" sugar and milk in MacD., there was a shop where you might of found an Air mattress, for a reasonable price. @rockgsxr5 ай бұрын
I travel like this, i never book anything, i buy the ferry ticket just before i leave home. I've just crossed Switzerland and back. If i hear one more person say it's expensive i'm going to sprint full speed and face plant myself into a brick wall. the vignette is EU50, it lasts for a year and the roads are magnificent, clean and well maintained. Compare that with what you have just paid to cross France and return for 2/3 days. The fuel is a bit more so plan a fill before and after entry/exit I've only been turned away from a campsite twice in my life, in swiss i paid 16CHF-41CHF , no more than France or Italy, likewise for restaurants. Yes it's a little more expensive than the UK BUT i don't mind paying more for top class food and a beautiful country with nice people, whereas the UK is shite, full of miserable migrants (that's why it's expensive because we have to pay their living) nasty oiks, thieves and bad grub. A euro campsite you can leave your valuables in your tent, nobody will touch them. If you're going to roll the dice on where you end up that night be prepared to get what you get, one night i stayed with some Dutch Harley gang in a big roadhouse for peanuts and it was excellent. If you are late and the camping is shut FFS roll your bike thru the pedestrian gate , set up where you find a space and pay tomorrow. I will start looking to camp around 16.00hrs Please don't eat Mcdonalds in countries that offer fine european cuisine, you deserve to be ripped off 30p for ketchup. I've eaten in restaurants for the same price as fast food. Happy travels

Do NOT buy a Motorway Vignette. It is easy to get through Switzerland on beautiful scenic and well kept roads, wether you are going to or coming from your destination! Listen to me please, i'm a long time resident in this country. Having paused the video at the beginning to write this, i'm now intrigued as to wether you did fork out nearly 40 quid each....., so now lets roll the film and see what you did!

You’ll be pleased to know we have never paid for the vignette nor travelled any motorway in Switzerland in all the times we visited 👍 We do our best to avoid them everywhere we much prefer to go slower and see more

🎉Putting on a cold wet helmet. Get that rich. Horrid. Tires have more rubber as they wear so more grip in dry. Not so in wet tho as cant remove the water Karen does that to me, leave me to deal with the crap

We each have our jobs here, seems to work for us. We hoping the tires will last until Slovenia!

You work for 40yrs to have $1M in your retirement, meanwhile some people are putting just $10K in crypto from just few months ago and now they are multimillionaires..

Hey guys, happy to see you enjoying your trip. BUT….. Could you please put a stop to the profanity? It really does not enhance your vlog and hurts our enjoyment of the program. Thanks

I haven’t noticed any profanity. There’s the odd expletive but nothing at all that might offend anyone other than an American fundamentalist evangelical!

Interesting use of the word "our" , coz no bugger's asked me if I offended.(I'm not. If I was, I wouldn't have kept watching ......🏍️💨💨💨🏍️💨💨💨🙊🙉🙈

Remember.... the Swiss go to Germany for a good time....the Germans go to France for a good time......the Danes don't go to Germany for a good time......🏍️💨💨💨🙀 the Swedish go to Denmark for a good time.....the Norwegians got to Sweden for a good time....and the Finns go into the woods on their own.

Thanks Nikki, I’m afraid we are unapologetically ourselves, it would not be authentic and we have no interest in joining the rest of the filtered instagram perfect versions of reality channels
