Reaction after Australia beat England by two wickets to take a 1-0 lead in The Ashes following an all-time classic at Edgbaston.
Ben Stokes' England set Australia a target of 281, and after rain delayed the start of the final day's play, Pat Cummins' side resumed their second innings on 107-3.
England worked through Australia's top order, and after Joe Root caught Alex Carey, which left the visitors 227-8, Nathan Lyon joined captain Pat Cummins at the crease with victory seemingly inevitable for the hosts.
However, the duo produced a stunning ninth-wicket partnership of 55 to hold off the attacks of Stuart Broad and Ollie Robinson to seal a famous win after five days of enthralling Test cricket.
It was a fitting conclusion to a match which ebbed and flowed, and produced some unpredictable moments, including captain Stokes' decision to declare on day one with England 393-8.
After the match, the 32-year-old refused to dwell on the surprising call and whether it affected the final outcome.
The second Test of the five-match series gets under way at Lord's in London on 28th June.

Pat Cummins was an absolute beast in this test. Not easy being a bowler and a captain at the same time but he kept grinding especially in that 2nd innings of England where he just kept on bowling and the The hunger to not throw his wicket away . Was absolutely amazing watching this first test match. If this is what we gonna get then i definitely can't wait to watch the other games. Just prep pitches that also give the bowlers a bit of something 😂😂 but other than that. This is test cricket, down to the last day🔥

You have to be kidding me!?! Riding his dick a bit much there. We got slaughtered by the Indians in our own backyard, and creamed again in India. Aussies made hard work of that win, letting Root dictate with the ball, a part timer! Our defensive style of play only worked due to sheer luck more than skill. Both batters had their fair share of luck, and aided by Englands generous declaration, I definitely wouldn’t be celebrating too much. Cummins captaincy is average at best, didn’t see too much in the way of nous. He has a long way to go to reach the likes of Waugh, Taylor and Ponting, and even Clarke. I hope he does, but he’ll need to be more proactive rather than reactive.

As captain’s Steve Waugh and Ricky Pointing were nearly unbeatable, a dominating force. Cummins is not in their league as yet. The fact that when the Poms finally won a test series in 2005 they went completely over the top, especially knighting players for ‘one’ win in 20 years….cringeworthy in fact.

One of the great tests. Could've gone either way. Good positive captaincy from both sides. Intensely competitive but in the right spirit. I'm a big fan of Jimmy Anderson and you could see, even after all his experience, how much this meant to him. Stuart Broad bowled brilliantly. Scotty Boland really contributed through the entire game. Uzzy looks in great touch. Great batting and bowling from both sides. If this is the standard for the series it will be a cracker!

As an Englishman, fair play to the Aussies, thoroughly deserved. We can talk all day about what Cummins can do as a cricketer but the big difference between the captains is mentality. Unlike Stokes, Cummins hasn’t lost sight of the basic principle which is that you play sport to win. Our captain on the other hand seems more interested in “entertainment” and “reinventing test cricket”. Even now, he doesn’t seem to have any regret or pain about the defeat because he feels the crowd enjoyed the game. I’d take the ruthless, effective brand of cricket played by the Aussies any day over this gung ho idiocy that we seem to be going with.

@SilentHotdog28

Australia had to bat when the conditions started to favour the bowlers more, it was a slow outfield, especially on day 5 after all the rain and it was hard to score boundaries, so we did really well to get the win, Pat and Lyon were just amazing, Boland was immense and Usman Khawaja was unbelievable. Those 4 players should absolutely be proud of themselves.

Pat's innings reminds me so much of his debut test in South Africa. He took on Dale Steyne & hit the winning runs. This test he took on all of the poms attack & won. I don't like Pat when he gets political, yes there's always politics in sport but when he's mouthing off in Straya about the climate change crap & refusing to do ads with the teams sponsor coz of Pats beliefs turned alot of Aussie's off him during our summer. We all love Pat, we took him in at 17/18 making his debut. Hes had so many injuries & missed out of years of all forms of cricket. We loved him coming back into the side & taking on the captaincy. He's a brilliant captain (altho i think Smudge helps him out) a brilliant bowler & a pretty good batsman. He's a hero in Straya atm, even our PM Albo in Parliament today actually congratulated Pat & the boys on this fantastic win.... that's how much cricket is so much more important than politics, the Aussie cricket captain is even ranked above the PM, he has a much harder job then Albo. If Patty keeps his political issues out of cricket & just play the game like he did today then he'll win back the love & respect of the Strayan public.

It doesn't happen all the time but more often that not Australian batters pick up the shortfall and fill in the gaps when others fail to make runs. In this test failures from the likes of Smith and Marny and even Head, I have no faith in Warner batting away any more - so there's no expectations, created a significant hole in the run tally. It has to be said the tail have been less than stellar in a significant number of recent test matches. That includes the first innings of this match where the last four scored 40 runs between them. In the second innings three of the bottom four stood up when required (scoring 80 compared to 40 runs in the first innings) to create, in my book, an unexpected Aussie win. An excellent team effort.

Who invented "Bazball"? Well, the early naughties Aussies used to bat at 4.5 runs an over and they did it for a decade. Having said that, I think Stokes' decisions to declare and the tempo he set the game up was spot on. He left enough time in the game for there to be a result either way. The jury is still out as to whether the English are good enough to maintain a high scoring rate all the time. If they win, they'll be vindicated, but if they lose they'll look very foolish.

This is rightly being described as a career defining test for Cummins. He has shown he has what it takes to be a brilliant captain
@memine3704
@memine3704 Жыл бұрын
We already knew he was a fighting player, he's still got improvement to do as a Captain. He made errors during the game that he got lucky and was able to catch up at the end. We'll lose more than we'll win from that position. It wasn't 'brilliant captaincy' that won us that one.

I think ppl are forgetting they won without any major contribution from smith Marnus Warner or Head, there's ton of improvement potentially to come from Australia. Hazlewood doesn't look at his best, I'd prbs bring starc in for him. Boland should be able to use the slope well at lords. And just have to rely on more kamikaze cricket from England to try and win this away ashes series finally

The way it looks now this series is Australia's to lose. Australia still have quite a lot of room to improve (like you say, Labuschagne, Smith, and Head didn't really fire, Hazelwood was far from his best) but England look pretty close to maxed out ability-wise. With Leach out, Stokes knee being pretty iffy, Anderson looking tired and toothless, and the Bairstow situation, England are definitely below par. They have other players they can substitute in but does that make them a stronger team? Not really. Foakes is a better keeper but can't bat as well. Woods is fast but does he take more wickets than the bowlers already in the squad? Not really. At best the subs are a side-grade. On paper Australia should win, England only wins if Australia throw it away.
@woopimagpie
@woopimagpie Жыл бұрын
@@dojoblink9148 If it's overcast and he gets his radar zoned in Starc will be a proper handful at Lords. Certainly a more dangerous prospect than Hazelwood looked in this match, and as you say, he can bat quite well.

England lost when Moenn Ali had a finger injury on his bowling hand. This team needs to look for a bowler of Moenn calibre and try Dom Bess next match if you are gonna think you would get a flat track again at Lords next week.

It's only natural that we have recriminations after the finish. Can't we just be content that, in Patsys words, it was 50/50 all the way. Sure, they could have been 9 fer and it could have gone to the last over but you can't have it all. When the ashes is played in Oz, Australia is expected to win and I don't think Aussie supporters get a huge kick out of it. It's these special close fought matches that get the nerves and emotions jangling and are what is remembered.

clearly eng selected not best eleven when stokes has asked for flat pitches your best bid to get wickets would be through spin or fast bowlers like Wood. I think if they keep on playing such funky cicket Australia will take it any day to win one of the easiest Ashes ever. Have some common sense that declaration, those shots selection of some players I mean bazball does not mean you ask pujara to hit 6 sixes in over. play aggressive cricket but those should play aggressively who can adapt aggressive style of play.
