Pat Cummins is adamant, there was nothing unfair about Johnny Bairstow's stumping on the final day of the second Ashes Test at Lord's.
The dismissal was a pivotal moment as England were chasing down a second-innings target of 371.
England captain Ben Stokes did his best with 155, but still the hosts fell 43 runs short.
Cummins though said Australia wicketkeeper Alex Carey had seen Bairstow wander out of his crease on a few occasions and so took the opportunity to knock down the stumps.
After some deliberation, his England counterpart was sent to the pavilion as the umpires agreed, they had not called over, and Bairstow had taken the decision to wander on his own.
The dismissal drew the ire of the crowd, but Cummins believes it was within the rules of the game and fair play and says he has spoken to Stokes and there's no animosity.

As an England fan it's embarrassing that they're using this as an excuse. Distracting from the actual poor cricket and constant insistence to play ollie robinson and have him leading our attack. Bairstow only has himself to blame. Carey didn't wait for him to step out of his ground, he threw it when Bairstow was still in his ground - which means he was being observant about what Bairstow was doing previously. He took a chance and it paid off. If Bairstow had waited for the umpire to call for the over, he wouldn't have got out. Foolishness from Bairstow, intelligence from Carey and Australia.

The problem is that when Bairstow looked up, the umpire was looking down reaching into his pocket to get the bowler's cap out. I've playing enough cricket to know what that means. The sq leg ump had already started walking. Ok they didn't call "Over", but if all of your body language points towards it being over, then the umps need to take responsibility here I dont blame Carey for having a crack either.
@heretichello8253
@heretichello8253 Жыл бұрын
Ben Duckett was not out yesterday because of the " written rules".Bairstow was out today because of the same "written rules".The England fans who were complaining about Bairstow wicket had no problems when Ollie pope run out Colin de Grandhomme in a similar manner at Lord's in 2022.Broad refused to walk after edging one to slip in 2015. And 2019 World Cup saw England getting a 6 in that last over because an overthrow from Guptill hit Stokes bat and it ran away to the boundary ( And they won that WC on boundary count- another technical rule ).What bias from England fans !. Note : The ball is dead only when the umpire deems it as dead. If the umpire didn't assume the ball dead the batsman should be wise enough to not assume that. Travis Head said, "last Test at Edgbaston I walked off my crease at the end of the over and the ball got whipped in. I questioned Bairstow would he take the stumps off, he said 'bloody oath I would'. I reminded him of this and said you'd do exactly the same". (LISTNR SPORT). Edit : McCullum did the same to Muralitharan some 18 years ago.Paul Collingwood didn't withdraw a run out appeal after his bowler Ryan sidebottom collided with Grant Elliott which made Elliott to fall on the ground and obviously resulted in his run out at The oval (4th ODI) in 2008.Bairstow was trying to stump Warner and Marnus the same way when Australia batted. But fortunately the ball didn't hit the stumps ( Carey might have got the idea from Bairstow). England bounced out almost 8 Australian batters after bowling boring Short pitched stuff session after session. They bounced out Nathan Lyon when he can't even barely stand on the ground. The bodyline tactics was used in 1932 by the same England team when there was no Helmets or security measures of any kind .( Now looking at Phil Hughes death, this seems scary.Lucky that no one died that time because of short pitch bowling ).And now England fans are talking about Spirit of cricket.LMAO. "Spirit of cricket" is a double edged Sword. "Mankading" is fair play too. Imagine a non striker stealing a single and winning a match like 2019 World Cup final or 1999 WC semifinal.Batsmen should play according to the laws. Don't take advantage of any.Already it became a batters game. 🤷🏻

Both are out but the De Grandhomme one was not at all similar to this one. De Grandhomme actually went to play a shot, lost his balance forcing him out of his crease and was subsequently stumped whilst trying to scamper back. Bairstow didn’t attempt to play any shot, he simply thought the ball was dead. Both technically out but not similar at all other than the fact they were stumpings.

I think the Starc catch and Bairstow stumping levelled each other out. Both were bizarre brain fades. You don't brace yourself from landing with the ball and you don't walk out of the crease before the ball is definitely dead. England fan here but let's be fair, it took an extraordinary effort from one-man show Stokes to get us anywhere near Australia. That is without Nathan Lyon on a five day pitch and with home advantage. Stokes needs backing up from his team (and the disgraceful MCC members who have embarrassed us all) and that starts with checking where the bloody ball is before leaving your crease!

Yes he caught it but was obviously not fully under control of the ball and his own movement, so clearly not out. Same with Bairstow’s brain fade. Rules is rules and out is out. Too many England fans forgetting Bairstow tried it on Aussie batters, the difference being Carey was good enough to hit the stumps! I doubt Stokes would have rescinded an appeal is Bairstow had been successful. Another stunning knock from Stokes though, he is a fighter.

Smith record tying 100, Lyon potential career ending injury, Duckett's two near century innings, new guy Tongue who took big wickets etc. If Starc's catch was upheld as out, England would be 5 down near end on Day 4, the results could have gone a different route already. This world is losing its morality day by day,so be the better person and show people winning by any means necessary isn’t the be all and end all not that bringing bairstow back would have made any difference but at least you did the right thing. England have lost both tests through poor tactics and selection. Bairstow dropping catches in the first test and giving his wicket away twice in the second test., although he did play very well batting in the first test. Foakes must be included. Baistow to open with Duckett ? Crawley is not going to conquer this attack. Wood selected for pace, Robinson and Anderson dropped. Ideal conditions for Anderson at Lords but did not deliver. Is it the Duke ball ? The main difference seems to be the ability of the Australians to adapt. Restrained opening partnership from Warner and Kwarja when some swing was there. Class act from Cummings. And England batsmen taking on the short ball and getting out.

Carey, as you probably know comes from a long list of shithousery Aussie wicket keepers, so after hitting bairstows stumps ( fantastic glove-work by the way) then proceeds to jump about all exited with all of his teammates like they’ve just won the lottery. So from being a bit stupid and not realising that behind him the aforementioned sneaky Aussie wicket keeper was ALWAYS on the lookout for a bit of shithousery ( second nature for a Aussie wicket keeper) loses his wicket. And if Pat Cummins had any sense of fair play and been a big enough man in front of millions of people watching and called bairstow back he would surely had been a true human being in front of so many people. This is not sour grapes, it’s just with sports almost morally bankrupt people need to see something honest about it. This guy gives 100% every single time. To still bowl 80/85mph at the end of the match shows just how much he gives and every single one of his mates as well. Top lad this. To be fair England need to put Mark Wood in for Pace factor was very good decision for Australia to choose Starc especially over Boland and it's not like Boland has been playing Bad they just realized from the first test they might need some extra pace. Tbf either drop Anderson(although he is great he has been struggling) Wood with pace would be a good option. This is just me saying because the England Bowlers struggled after a while bowling those short deliveries consistently and they not used to that.

I'll be 100% upfront - I'm an England fan through and through. I don't like Aussies, I want to beat them at cricket and rugby at all times...and to lose to them hurts...it hurts a lot. Becuase of this love for them, I also take great pleasure at laughing at their misfortunes and reminding them of their cheating past. But even I am not so biased to overrule the basic tenets of cricket because of my hatred of Aussie. I've looked at the incident repeatedly and for me there were 2 judgements to make in the so called 'spirit' of the law (because to the letter of the law YJB was 100% out): 1. Did Carey purposefully wait for YJB to leave his crease in order to try and take a cheeky wicket? 2. Was there then a reason for Cummins to retract the appeal? I have to say 'no' on both counts. If you watch the replay closely, Carey throws the ball before YJB moves out of his crease. I think Carey must have noticed YJB wandering previously and sent the throw as a warning - not really expecting to catch YJB out of his crease - but more to deliver a warning. Carey didn't wait for YJB to move first before throwing the ball. When the ball did hit the stumps with YJB out of his crease, YJB had no grounds to look so incredulous IMO. Every cricketer knows that on ball 6 of an over, the ball is only dead when the umpire calls 'over'. For whatever reason, YJB forgot this today...and he paid the price for it. I don't think the Aussie skipper has any obligation to overlook the brain fade YJB had and overturn the appeal - especially as they had to live with the letter of the law when it was decided that Starc's catch off Duckett wasn't a catch, even though it really was. The fault here was YJB's - 100%. Imagine there was a spinner bowling and Carey was standing up - if YJB left the ball he wouldn't have wandered out of his crease as Carey took it in his gloves. The only reason he did it here was because he assumed it was the end of the over and wasn't expecting Carey to do what he did. And I would also like to add that the reaction in the Long Room at Lords was DISGRACEFUL. The members that touched any Aussie player should kicked out of the MCC and banned from attending any matches at Lords. The rest of the members who decided to boo the Aussies for something that was completely lawful need to take a very good look at themselves. As an England fan I am really p*ssed off - but not because I think we were robbed by Aussie - its because I'm embarrassed that we couldn't front up to our own failings here.
