I have 3 or 4 different ones but hardly ever use them. My favorite for around camp is a simple cap light that snaps on the brim. A headlamp stashed in the glove box of your car is handy for nighttime flat tires. Thanks, DD!

LOL about the Energizer. I think we all have one or two for the same reason you mentioned. I love mine for a camp/tent lamp, keep me from draining the batteries in the hunting lamp.

Great information as always. I have a Black Diamond that I’ve has for at least 10 years or more and it has served me well.

Thanks DD, a really good review and I totally agree on the features that you think are essential. To me having a red light and all lights capable of being dimmed is very important. I have a 260 lumen energizer and a 360 lumen black diamond and both are plenty of light. Both were gifts so I just have to live with them being manufactured in China but I will say they have both performed well and I have no major complaints except where they were manufactured.

Another informative video. Like you I have a Petzl for hunting with a rechargeable battery pack. Never let me down.

Excellent video! I too have run the gamut with various makes and models of headlamps. The brands you brought up are exactly the same as I would recommend. Petzl's are excellent and very light however I have shattered the thin plastic casing. Shattered may not be the correct term but rather had the plastic housing "spider web" into many fractures. Having said that it did not interfere with the functionality and I just applied a layer of Super Glue and all was well. One hunting tip is if you keep your headlamp in your hunting pack you may want to separate the battery pack. More than once I've found out that my headlamp had come into contact with something which turned it on. Not good when you need it. A feature I find useless is the strobe setting, personally it causes more problems than good.

Thanks for the super glue trick. You can blame the "tacticool fools" for the strobe feature on flashlights it is totally useless (it's supposed to blind an adversary but really just blinds everyone including the user). You actually have a better advantage against someone trying to hurt you with a solid very bright light.

I've used that Princentec headlamp for years. I love it and have never had an issue with it. It's my goto headlamp for hunting. I love that you can't turn on the white light by accident; you have to hold the button down. I say it's a great option!

I use headlamps for hunting, long distance backpacking, canoe trips in the boundary waters, elevator service and repair work. I’ve used every major brand of lamp. Princeton was the biggest disappointment as the battery latch does indeed break. Yes energizer stays in my tool bag and gets daily use. I’m down to just black diamonds and energizer. And whenever the other lamp goes bad it will be replaced with $12 energizer.

Great review as always, DD! Petzl's dual option for AA & its proprietary battery pack is nice.

Thank you for a great video. I was wondering if any additional color light other than red was useful for retaining night vision and keeping bugs off my face. I think you answered that question. I hope manufacturers realize if they feel they must put rechargeable batteries in their products they should be removable/replaceable when they go dead and cross compatible with easily acquired types.

Desert Dog: just watched your last video about the Ruger 77. Could you do a video on gun parts that are forged, cast, MIM, and plastic, specifically receivers? You seem like an expert on metals' manufacture.

Interesting video. I use the 3A eveready each day for work and agree that about battery life. I also use the big brother 2A to this, top strap and no red light, but has two settings of spot and two of led. Both are good value.

Check out the bushel headlamp from Walmart. It comes in a box that you can see the lamp through. Takes rechargeable battery or 3 triple AAA BATTERY. I love this headlamp ! I use it for night fishing an hunting an use it for taking out or bring our horses in an out of the barn. I think it’s like $35, BEST cheapest most convenient one I have found on the lower end price point !

An energizer will always manage to turn itself on in your pack…. The last time in the bush i forgot my lamp. A micro led torch taped to my forehead with a beany to secure it saved the day!

G'day from Australia. I use the black diamond model you showed. It's softer red light lets me approach mobs of pigs in the open without giving the game away. The petzl will be my next investment though. 👌

Hey Desert Dog, I recently shot a Eurasian Collared Dove. But he didn’t expire right away and was still alive when I found him. I ended up ripping his head off which was pretty heart wrenching for me (even if he was an invasive species). Is there a better way to dispatch a wounded dove or any other upland game bird or do I need to man up?

A sharp slap to the neck with the edge of your hand should do it.
@Nickrioblanco12 жыл бұрын
I used to hit the head on my shotgun but got tried of cleaning the blood off my barrel. Then I started choking them out (I figured if lions and leopards do it why not me). Well that got me criticism when I did it on rabbits from my hunting buddies because it's too slow. I now put my thumb or the side of my hand (below the index finger) and push up on the chin (towards the top of the shoulders). I don't if this will work on birds but I will try it this dove season opener.
