I grew up on my dad's 78' FX Lowrider. I remember asking things like why are you using clothes pins on your bike, and why how come I can't kick it like you do? Hours in the garage watching him turn wrenches, before I had any clue what I was looking at. Long ago I lost my dad along with any knowledge he had to pass down. The bike, well that's another story. I thought of tracking it down but I also "know what I don't know", and realize I'd still have no clue what I was looking at. Then I stumbled across your channel, and it seems to be stuck on TV in the garage now. You remind me a little of him and having you on out here brings a lil piece of him back. I wanted to say thank you for sharing your knowledge and wisdom with the rest of us. It's truly a passion of yours and I am greatly appreciative. I've got a spot cleared out in the garage for her and I think it's time I brought her home. Always watching, Wayne Dunford Jr

Yet again, a great informative video. The mechanic that rebuilt my 74ci shovel motor a couple years ago wanted a set of STD heads, but couldn't find a new set as they don't make them anymore. I heard they aren't in business anymore. Sad, because I really wanted them. In any case, I'm glad you can show us what we'd be dealing with, were we to have them. Can't wait for the next one! Thanks for the education! Louis

I like those "runners" (ridges) inside the intake and exhaust ports. They DO increase velocity over stock heads. A buddy of mine ran STD Shovel heads on a 93" stroker build back in the 1980s. Dave Mackie did the port/flow work on those heads. ALL Panheads and Shovelheads should have 3 stud exhaust mounts. A good exhaust seal makes life easier for exhaust valves. Ride safe, Mike.

Hi Mike, I love your videos! This is great for me because I just finished building a 74” shovel with STD heads.* Mine are single plug but otherwise the same as these. I’m excited to watch the rest of your build. My request is: could you talk about break in for a freshly built shovelhead? There’s a lot of information out there, much of it conflicting, about heat cycles and how to properly get new rings to properly seat in freshly honed cylinders. I’d love to know your process. I trust your advice a lot more than the others! * also jugs honed to 20 over, weisco 20 over 9:1 pistons and rings, andrews b grind cam, delkron cases, ratchet top 4 speed in an STD case (rebuilt by me), 1.5” belt open primary, hand shift, chain final drive, spin on oil filter, evo oil pump, hydraulic lifters Thanks for your great work, Phil

Another great video Mike! Got a question for you. How do you remove and replace the rocker box studs on a 1977 FXE? I’m trying to remove mine and it’s a bit of a pain. Any good advice? I don’t recollect seeing a video where you replace or remove them.
@pacificmike9501
@pacificmike9501 4 ай бұрын
My advice is, "Don't do it unless you have to." They have a tight interference fit. Getting them out usually maens destroying the threads in the head itself. I believe V-Twin carries replacement studs. It is a nightmare at best.

The factory mounted the pipes well. They supported them well. The pipes were fully supported and the one stud just located them. It's when we mounted custom pipes that the problems started. But I know that it has been upgraded to 80 cubic inch. I know that it does not have the stock cam in it although I do not know which cam is in it. It has solid lifters which I have carefully adjusted. I have a little bit of noise in the top end once the engine is warm which I assume means the end play on the Rockers need to be adjusted. It's not a hard job I've done it before. Anyway on to the question. When the bike is warmed up when I blip the throttle as I let off just as the RPMs settle down I get a rattle sound. I'm thinking it may be the compensator. What are your thoughts on that? Thank you in advance Mike.
@pacificmike9501
@pacificmike9501 2 жыл бұрын
This is obviously not your first rodeo. Compensator rattles can be really loud and deep, and sound like everything's coming apart. Quite often the spring on the compensator is "tired" and I'll add a flywheel washer under the nut, just to tighten the spring a little. Could be your primary chain is loose. Check the tensioner. I've chased so many rattles that I tighten everything I can think of when I service the bike. It can be an exhaust pipe or the skid plate, or the chain guard. Sometimes you just gotta go crazy 'til you find it.

Yes, been there, done that! Thank you for the advise brother. I run a one man shop working on bikes. But no matter how long you've been doing it there is always something to be learned. That's one of the reasons I enjoy your videos. Thank you Mike for your knowledge and taking the time to respond, I greatly appreciate it.

Hey Mike . I have a 47 61EL engine I suspect leakage under the rocker arm tins in the past . The engine is on a stand . Do you have any tips such as maybe filling valve spring area with alcohol etc. and if leakage is found is there any remedy that doesnt require valve guide removal as I know engine ran well previously ?
@pacificmike9501
@pacificmike9501 3 жыл бұрын
Normally, the problem is either there is too much oil going up there or the oil is not draining out, therefore, it fills up and leaks out. Oil pressure can be adjusted at the pump, and /or the drain tubes can be cleaned out with a fairly stiff, but flexible wire. This is in the Knucklehead service manual.

Michael, I have the 4 plug 81 Shovelhead 80”. Replaced the S&S super E, and wanted to plug it for fine tuning. My point; left side plugs are long shank, plugs on the right short shank. 😮 I looked at the threads on the head and the left side thread cavity is definitely longer, verses on the right short thread cavity. Can you tell me if Harley intended to do that, it’s crazy if it is… help please
@pacificmike9501

It's the way the heads were cast. On my original 77 heads, which we dual plugged back in the eighties, I used Champion J12YC plugs on the right and Champion N12YC on the left. This could be different with different year and manufacture heads. I think S&S does what I did. Call them and ask them.

What kind of valve guides are you gonna be using? Jimms?Harley? And what clearances Do you run Between the valve stem and the valve guides on intake and exhaust? Installing valve guides into the head Is really important Can you show us a video on how you install your valve guides into the head?? And how you size The valve guide To the hole in the head? Thanks for the video

Sorry, they are done. We did these quite a while back. The guides and valves are Kibblewhite. I use factory specs.
@johnjaco5544
@johnjaco5544 3 жыл бұрын
@@pacificmike9501 Ok just wanted to see if our specs were the same. On setting the guides you put your heads In the oven at 350° for about 1⁄2 hour. You put your guides in the freezer overnight, Then you have to have the right feel for tapping The guides into the head It's pure feel.. But the guides have to be sized for the correct size hole in your heads. all valve guides are sized differently, It depends on how many times that head has had a valve job and wallowed out the guide hole Previously.

@pacificmike9501
@pacificmike9501 3 жыл бұрын
Depends on the year heads which decides whether you're using short or long reach. Short reach RJ12YC, long reach RN12YC. When we did my 77 heads (many years ago), to get everything in the right place, I had RN's on the left side and RJ's in the right side. Consult the ignition mfgr. for plug gap.

I got a crane cam for my shovel, is that a good idea?
@pacificmike9501
@pacificmike9501 3 жыл бұрын
Cam selections are personal choices. If you read about it and you selected it based on what you want it to do, and it will fit your engine properly (the mfgr. probably told you that one), then it's a good idea. I've run so many cams just to experience the differences, that I don't generally make recommendations on them.

Ow! Makes my brain hurt in a good way. No wonder you were I err, complicated configurations. And for those of you who may think brain hurting is indicative of not understanding, you are almost correct, brain hurting occurs mostly when you're actively trying to comprehend a difficult concept or learn a new task or action. Personally, I don't mind leaving this brain bending action packed video content to my builder. I know when I'm at my limit. Thank you Mike, Only years of experience lets you know when something just isn't quite right. Parts for shovelheads are getting harder and harder to find. There is of course aftermarket, mostly Chinese made. In Minnesota there's a very small town called Cosmos. Dan & Angie Cairl have new and used Motorcycle parts. They buy and sell. There phone # is 320-440-0000, mailing address 200 N Jupiter St. Cosmos MN. 56228. I hope it's okay to post this. They were recommended by a parts man in a Harley Davison dealership who also loves shovels. As always Keep the rubber side down.

Must always be caeful to adhere to what the manufacturer recommends. Metal compatibility is a major factor. Stainless valves? Nitrided? Bronze or castiron guides? Running seals? 20,00 miles is not very long. But, I don't know what heads you're using. I assume they are Shovelhead. And, I don't mean to be rude. Locale has a lot to do with it too.
