Always amazed how much the chassis cleans up. Goes from dust, dirt and cob web covered, with rust all over the place and just generally looking old, tired and filthy and then you get at it, with air, with brushing, various brushes, rough sponges, sandpapers of many grades, various cleaners, chemicals and a whole bunch of manual labor and physical effort is put in. At the end what do we get. Compared to the first pictures we get a clean, shiny, bright, chassis. Sure you can see a mark here or there, you can see that it has age, although cleaned and polished and shined up. I'm always amazed just how much cleaner, newer, brighter, shinier, and nicer the chassis looks compared to the original look when you are done with your cleaning. Even before re-painting some parts when you can still get a full feeling of the age of the metal it still looks so much better. So clean. So bright. Amazing. Wow. Then its almost a shame to repaint some parts because once they are repainted you can no longer tell how old the part or metal piece was from its look cos from its newly painted look it seems brand new. The painting section of the restore process basically transforms sections of metal, panels, etc., into brand new, straight from the factory pieces. The nice shiny metal painted sections. Such a change to the whole piece. And what's the biggest shame of this all is that the chassis and its cleanup and transformation from old metal rust bucket with many years of age ready for the dump and which is turned into a nice shiny chassis will not actually be seen by 95%+ of people as most people only will look at the outside and only glancingly and will never look inside the body to see this transformed chassis and metal structures and frameworks. Its kind of a shame, but regardless we have these videos and we know what a transformation has taken place and what artistic talents where applied to reach that transformation. Love it. Good job and looking forward to future videos to see more. 🙂

Hi Marty, this chassis cleaned up very well, I was impressed when it was finished. I didn't repaint any parts except the light box at the front choosing to show the age of the radio and preserve some of the cleaned parts with clear coat, even the rust on the speaker. I did have to paint the GOAT cans in the end but they looked the part when finished. Thank you Marty 👍🙂

Being emboldened by watching all of your videos, I recently completed my very first restoration project. I replaced all the resistors and capacitors in a 1939 radio, a Silvertone Model 1984. The original tubes still work and had paper stickers on them showing October, 1938 as the manufactured date. Lots of rust and a large rodent nest was found under the chassis. It doesn't look as good as your standard of excellence, but the dial calibration is spot on and the frequency stability is solid. It must have been a very well designed radio. It's not a valuable radio, but it was my late father-in-law's radio and sat in his wood shop in the basement of their house for over fifty years. It will now sit in the wood shop of my son, who learned his love of woodworking in his grandfather's shop listening to this radio. Best Regards.... Dave, K4TO

It’s you again!! Your video came just in time to miss my birthday 🥳. It was on June 5th. I turned 53. I just saw that this is a Healing ❤️‍🩹. It looks like 👍 this may have been a basement set. A little neglect on the inside. That speaker 🔊 looks like 👍 it’s field coil. I hope 🤞 the dial cord is in good 😊 enough shape. I can see that the dial light 💡 is working. I’d try cleaning 🧹 this set with compressed air, in a can. This will avoid bending parts in the radio 📻. The power cord might be in good 😊 enough shape. Your friend, Jeff!!

Wonderful video on a cold, grimm and rainy European summer day. Wonderful work as usual. I wanted to tell you that I found out a french guy made a little module for fm so easy to install. It uses the AM variable capacitor to tune. It's called FM-DW converter. I installed in my 1930's Zenith and works wonderfully.
@DavidTipton101
@DavidTipton101 Жыл бұрын
Hi Veljko, thank you. I looked up the FM-DW converter, it looks great, especially for some of the later model radiograms. It's over $70au but might be worth it in some cases. Thank you for the information Veljko. Cheers 👍😃

@Ragnar8504 Жыл бұрын
That's an interesting one, thanks! I've got an early-50s Radione 551U that's AM-only and I've been debating whether to restore it or not because AM is definitely on its way out in Europe. The only issue is that - as indicated by the U - it's an AC/DC set so the module may or may not work in this radio. Unfortunately one of the valves (UL41) also has become quite hard to find over the last few years, 40 Euros and up for a tested used one. The 551U is missing almost all the valves except for one of the UAF42s and the UM4 magic eye but I don't hold much hope for the latter still working. My dad found this radio out in the street way back in the 70s and it's been sitting around broken all my life. It's in pretty sorry shape, all dinged up, speaker cone torn, valves missing, one of the cans (shields) is missing, mains lead cut off, back cover missing too. One of the oddities of this radio is that it was marketed as FM-ready, has an FM dial and band switch setting but there's no FM section whatsoever, the switch contact is simply floating. Even more interestingly the FM dial goes from 2.8 m to 3.5 m which is more or less the current FM band, while radios only went up to 100 and later 104 MHz well into the 1960s.

As far as I can tell those Philips mustard caps first appeared in 1959 or thereabouts (might have been late 1958, my sample of date-stamped Philips stuff from that era is much too small to be conclusive), not sure how long they stayed in production. They do suggest that those repairs were done early in the radio's life, maybe in the 60s.

Hi David. Great job, I’m sure it will look (and work) grand when done. A little tip (which maybe you know already)? If you need to reduce the diameter of rubber components, we used to leave them in a freezer overnight then skim them up in the lathe with a nice sharp tungsten cutting tool. Works a treat! TPU filaments ("flex filaments" tend to be harder than rubber though. TPU98 is much harder but even the softer types aren't quite the same. I've wanted to try my hand at silicone casting for a while, using 3D printed moulds but haven't gotten around to it. It might work for replacing the infamous crumbling clutch rubbers in late-50s Philips tape recorder transports, basically rubber cylinders with chamfered edges. Three of these each transfer power to the reel tables in FFwd/Rew.

@@DavidTipton101 We've got a few spools of TPU98 (Fillamentum Flexfill 98A) at work and keeping them in the original bags with sachets of silica gel seems to work fine, even though it gets muggy enough to cause problems with PLA bubbling on hot summer days. 98 is harder than most rubber mixes but I've successfully used it for printing cable glands.

An unassuming radio, but clearly one worth the Tipton touch, I'm sure your sister in law will love it. Sounds great, I assume they went for a separate switch to give balance to the design/appearance of the unit.

I think it was I who asked about the goat shield! My fifteen minutes of fame starts here. Wonderful vid as always Dave, thanks so much. And I'm looking forward to part two and that magnificent Bakelite case - I'm working on a Bakelite clock at the moment; more brittle than your case I'm afraid. Incidentally, and I'm sure you already know this, Fairy liquid or similar makes a very useful and uninvasive lubricant for rubber fittings and such - can make those grommets a wee bit more cooperative. Thanks again mate.

Hi David. One of Healings better radios. Accolades as usual. I've just finished a sad 403e Moderne (Scales). You'll see it in this weeks video, but the mains cord has no clamping or any where to put said clamping, and the tuning capacitor is buried so I couldn't clean it. I don't know why they fetch such huge amounts, they are a terrible radio!!! (But I guess they look good...) And most important, the owner is over the moon. How did you go fixing that signal tracer. My Heathkit is up and running again at last.

The lovely lady will love it :-D I saw you left the mustard caps in there, but they are known to be pretty reliable in there sealed case :-D Some of the resistors were 20% tolerance, as wide as a barn door lol :-D That light plate looked so sad, it's better than new now :-D I hope you gave the controls a good wash. For the rubbery tuning drive i thought you might use a bit of motor bike rubber fuel pipe. I'm so surprised you made a plastic one, i hope the cord doesn't slip. ( Lovely printed copy) :-D

@DavidTipton101 Жыл бұрын
Hi zx8401ztv. Thanks you, I hope she likes it. Yes, tube radios don't seem to mind out of tolerance resistors and the caps will be OK. Rubber tube for the tuning shaft would have worked just as well. The plastic one doesn't slip, I was concerned but it works well 🙂
