Health care is more than just policy: Rayden Llano at TEDxStanford

Health care policy is a complicated ongoing discussion that requires deep societal introspection about what we choose to value. With an emotional appeal to use real cases as the starting point for that conversation, Rayden Llano takes a look at health care systems around the world.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

It is really sad to know some people die simply because they could not afford to go see a doctor or get the surgery or help that they need. I know I would be devastated to hear my grandmother could not afford to het help. Like Mr. Llano, I would also feel powerless and want to help in any way i can. I think the United States needs to focus on trying to make health care more available for everyone. I like how he states "the question I find myself asking is not whether we can afford a basic level of minimum healthcare for everyone but whether we choose to make that possible." I understand what he is saying and he knows they can afford a basic level healthcare but do they actually want to make that possible. They should want to make the possible so women like his grandmother can get the help they deserve.

I agree that it is very sad that for some people the access to health care could simply mean life or death. I definitely think the U.S. has the means to make health care universal, but I also think we are a long way away from that as a society. Sadly, we have to want it enough as a whole, and I think there are a lot of people in the U.S. that do not feel the same as we do.

You're right because many people view it differently and do not think that way. It would be great if everyone agreed on it or enough people agreed on it to change it. Then more people could have the access to health care that they deserve and not be stressed about not being able to afford it.

Does noone understand also the size differences compared to the United States however?? and related to this size, who is going to be responsible for the amount it will cost for universal coverage? It is an amazing concept, but due to the amount of people livingin this country I can't imagine how it would ever happen.

It is extremely unfortunate that in the U.S. many people cannot receive the health care they need because of their financial standing. I agree with Mr. Llano when he says that health policy is a complex issue and you cannot just take pieces of health care policy from other countries and bring it to the U.S. However, I think we could try. Health policy in the U.S. needs to focus not on the financial aspect of health care, but what we value in health in our society like Mr. Llano said. The U.S. does not have an issue with obtaining sustainable resources for health care, in fact we have an abundance. Its whether we want to make it available for all Americans, even for those without the ability to pay. I agree with Mr. Llano that we as a nation could create a change, we have the ability and resources, we need to value health over monetary gains.

I agree that it is very unfortunate. Innocent people like his grandmother deserve to get help but it is terrible that they can't because they can't afford it. I would be very upset if my grandmother would live after getting a sugary to learn she can't afford it so may die. The nation would change greatly if they value health and focus on health in our society.

Yes, as Americans we need to value our health more. We are one of the countries that has the most health care problems in policy and with citizen's personal health status.
